No. Who is the person he is talking to when he says "i won't let her get you"?

Is it one of his harem and he is using her as a symbol for his power? Or is it someone special I don't remember?

I dont think we've seen her before. She doesnt look like a Valkyrie. More like a mirror of Odin.

I only have excellent ideas
I don't know what there is to suggest that the other Daft Punk-ish figure is a woman. My first, probably incorrect, thought was Loki, probably because Gillen's whole "I am the crime that cannot be forgiven" (that's the phrasing, right?) in his Norse stuff over at Marvel seemed to loom large in this issue thematically.

I'm pretty sure that line is from Ewing's run. But yeah, Loki makes sense if you look at the horn motif on the helmet. The other option people are considering is Frigg, and that makes sense too. It's a mystery.

Also another theory about their identity, the page immediately after says 'Thought and Memory', which are Odin's ravens. It might be possible that he's also a multiple god? Who knows though, not enough information to go on just yet.

I'd be surprised if it was Loki, just because Loki is such a signature Gillen character, and I'm pretty sure he's said in interviews that he avoided using him for that reason.

I like the theory that Woden is not who we think he is, especially as he is masked. Are Woden and his mysterious masked partner actually the ravens, Huginn and Muninn? Perhaps, but I'm not sure what that would mean or if it adds anything.

Woden almost certainly knows that there are more than 12 pantheon Myers. Perhaps this is another secret member?

I've also seen speculation that it's Laura. Seems unlikely, but maybe not impossible.

Definitely not impossible, Annake throws Woden her body and insults him, Woden Valkyrizes her? I think it's more likely that she's another god, though. The way Woden and Annake were talking about it, Annake can actually give anyone godhood at any time, so who knows how many "extra" gods are floating around.

Ananke calls him "the pet of a god". I took this to mean she was reminding him that he only exists/lives at her mercy BUT it can, esp. given his unknown partner at the end, totally be read that way. You can also read the line where he thinks "Odin gave up his eye" as not referring to the mythical/past Odin but Odin as a separate and current being than himself. I wouldn't put money on it but it's interesting to think about. I also wonder if Woden is the only god "in the know" as it were.

I love the use of Lick-ed and Divine "footage" and must confess I didn't remember it was from a different comic while I was reading it because, as some of you might remember, I am loving terrible. Seriously, even after reading the dedication to Fraction and Zdarsky. Christ. On a similar note I'm glad I read this issue in my office and not in the lunchroom.

Yup, these all support that theory. I think they're there to deliberately lead you down that path,. The main reason I don't think this is the case though is I just don't see what that adds to the story, or the conspiracy. If Woden is actually Hunginn (or Muninn), then even if he's a different god, he's still the same person, who's done the same things. That also means that if the other person is an unknown god, Ananke resurrected them, so would know about them. It could be someone that she's using to keep Woden sweet (he's clearly very useful to her), but I also don't see that she couldn't achieve the same effect by just slowly counting to 3... The threat of a head a-splosion is probably more than enough to get him to do her dirty deeds for her. It seems a strange place to add a brand new character.

It's likely a character we've already met. The more I think about it, the more I think it could be Laura though. Woden clearly had a thing for her, for one. Also, he wears a mask because he disfigured himself, its entirly possible it some kind of life support, and the things he makes clearly have pretty strong powers, so perhaps its possible that this could stretch to keeping alive someone who's recently found themselves headless? The gods are beacoup strong, after all. Plus, Persephone is a god who's story is all about resurrection and rebirth. I am fairly certain she'll be back one way or another.

Who else could it be though? Lucifer? Seems doubtful. One of the Valkyries? Beth? That could be interesting...

Ugh. loving Woden.

I'll bet on Lucifer. Lucifer, especially as Gillen used her, is a bit of a reflection of Loki, and Odin and Loki were best buds in myths.
Odin was narrating the whole story to the horned person, and he talked about Cassandra and Laura in 3rd person (eg "I hated her"), but he never quite does that when talking about Lucifer. I'd bet he copied or saved part of Lucifer somehow because this Odin is a minion and Lucifer is all vanity and take charge.
Ananke is the way gods enter the world, so maybe Odin found his own way to bring a god in, but I think Lucifer is a cleaner answer. The horns work, the red text works, the context works.

As for some of the other stuff, these gods have always been a bit separate from the real mythological gods. Tara wasn't sure what Tara she was, and Ananke said that wasn't uncommon. So that explains his phrasing when he says "Odin sacrificed his good looks for wisdom"

I'd buy that. Woden finds a way to save/bring back Lucifer because he didn't approve of Ananke killing her. (Plus the books makes sure to mention how he felt about her versus Inanna, Tara, and Laura so if it's a case of resurrection, smart money's on Luci.) That's something Ananke would notice re: "POWER LEVELS" or whatever the hell, but there's no reason she, Lucifer, can't be powerless inside that Tron suit, but Woden needs to keep her around for Reasons (some kind of coup? Who knows.) so that's why she couldn't just disappear into society again.

I just got the first trade and it's loving gorgeous, and the story / setting is pretty neat too.

It's basically a world where people are all animals, and the high elite run on Magic and live in floating cities and dominate the tribes that live on the ground.

Like these Bison, lead by Seven Scars:

Except Magic is running out. One Wizard has a plan to bring back The Champion through time and space, because he will bring back the Magic. Not everyone agrees with this plan.

The spell, and perhaps the plan itself, go wrong, and their floating city crashes, and now a highly politicized and scheming society is simultaneously trying to survive when all they have known is decadence, and under threat not only from themselves, the environment, but also the tribes they have abused.

The whole thing is tied together nicely by this young (and newly orphaned) kid, who is old enough to be capable and aware but young enough to have not become one of the old politicians or scared people, and instead is excited by this adventure.

There's more to it but I think it's best to discover that on your own because it's way cooler without the briefing.

Yeah, this is the kind of stuff I dig. I read the first issue but kinda forgot about it until the trade came out, and snapped it up immediately. But then I moved city and haven't had a chance to read it yet. I might dig it out of whichever box it's in tonight :)
