People usually bring up the hate subreddits when discussing why reddit sucks but most hate subs except r/theredpill and r/tumblrinaction are actually pretty small. The problem is the users of all the popular 8-million-subscriber subreddits like r/askreddit, r/worldnews or r/gaming are barely a step down from the hate sub users and will pretty much upvote the hell out of any pedophile, MRA, or nationalist posts they can find. So no there's no "reddit community", there are just lots of individual reddit communities and they're all absolute poo poo full of human trash. r/nameoftvshowyoulike might not be overwhelmed with guys who think free speech covers their right to look at kiddie porn but the substantially bigger subreddits that make the front page pretty much are

It's crazy, because I have seen message boards organized like that. Some php/vbulletin boards had it as an option, some low tech boards only offered that layout, but it's a really 90s design. It was a terrible design in the 90s, and I don't know how it held on long enough to be popular in the 10s.
