And Cloud Atlas was really cool but I also enjoy books with gimmicks

I read through House of Leaves and didn't hate it like most of the people I see on this board

Did anyone read Danielewski's other book where there were two stories happening simultaneously throughout the book?

I've wanted to try that but I haven't really heard anyone talk about it

Murakami def. writes magical realism or maybe magical surrealism but if you can't take weird sex scenes then don't read it. he has cool cats in his books tho. I thought the sex scene in 1Q84 was with a high schooler (it wasn't actual sex? Iirc) which is prettily common in Japan I thought

House of leaves is really good!! I didn't know ppl hated it, it creep me the heck out

I've read 1Q84 and it gets really self-indulgent. It had a bunch of good parts but it's hard to recommend unless you really like Murakami. I hate to think of all the people that were introduced to Murakami through it.

Thankfully his latest (translated) book, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage, is quite good.

I've never really gotten good at reading things past a surface level, so themes need to be like smacking me in the face for me to pick them up. I've always wondered if that's hurting my enjoyment of some things I read or not

Lately whenever I recommend Murakami to someone I've been suggesting it. I feel like these days it's probably the best way to introduce someone to his works.
