I'm kind of stuck at an impasse. I really like the New Squiffer. I use it a lot in Rainmaker and Tower Control. I'd say about half the time I am top two on my team in kills, and have done some miracle plays with ink mines and the inkzooka. I've made it up to A- rank, but I've noticed that I am the only person at this level who uses the New Squiffer. I have not seen another person use it in ranked pretty much ever. I am having an extremely difficult time making it up to A rank, and I think it might be due to my weapon choice. I tried some other chargers, and I wasn't a big fan. What I like about the Squiffer is how quickly it charges, that it kills in one hit, that it uses very little ink, and I really like the special. I don't like the short range, but that's about it. Any advice? I've used the Tentatek Splattershot a few times, and it's good but maybe not my style. I use the Aerospray MG for Turf War and Splat Zones but it's useless in the other modes.

You probably have to play the same way you would a Splattershot at high levels, so i'm a bit amazed you didn't immediately pick up the splattershot. You CAN stand your ground and just pound most everyone else with the range & speed you can do damage at but you probably need to learn to be a sneaky bastard. Moreso since people at this level will see that big line of ink go flying by them and figure out where you were shooting from a little easier than the other weapons. Look for chances to rush up on someone's side and hit them before they know you're there and learn to fire > move > fire. Which you really have to learn to do since it takes you an instant before you can fire and someone like me is going to be flinging ink your way if I'm remotely aware of you.

Do you hesitate or play too cautiously with the New Squiffer? Maybe you need to get used to a weapon that allows for better close-range combat, and then just go crazy with it. I am often hilariously bad at aiming at people but I am constantly heading straight for the enemy/tower/rainmaker to get in the action. I get on the tower as long as I'm not obviously going to die when I land on it, and I am the queen of moving the Rainmaker forward in less than 10-point increments. Anyway, whenever I fly into the action with my piss-poor aim, sometimes I am lucky and I kill people! Most of the time, though, I die. Often, I have the most deaths on my team. I will even get distracted and chase after people, thereby distracting them, even though I usually end up dying this way. (Not that I am completely hopeless, because sometimes I'm quite good. But I am inconsistent and more often crap than good.) Somehow once I started playing like this my rank started steadily going up.

I don't know if this sort of play style would work with everyone, but for me at least, the go-for-broke tactic has been way more successful than I thought it would be. Sometimes I feel like I don't really deserve the ranking I have.

How's your positioning? Chargers live and die based on the spots they fight from on a map and the Squiffer is no different. The only difference is that you need to find different spots than other chargers because of your shorter range.

Also, how's your inking? Chargers can actually cover a huge amount of ground, so you want to be shooting as much as possible so you give yourself and your team places to go. This is doubly important for you since you want to avoid close-quarters fights and need to escape if somebody's in your personal space. The Squiffer actually excels at this more than any other charger thanks to its charge speed and ink efficiency.

The only use cases where Damage Up makes you kill things faster is if you're using a charger (lets you release the attack sooner to get a one-hit kill; enough Damage Up makes the E-Litre capable of insane snap shots) or if the opponent has Defense Up (It can negate them). Other than that, you will absolutely always take the same number of hits to splat something. There's an edge case where if the person already has a bit of damage, you might splat them in one less hit if you have the damage up than if you didn't but that's not worth blowing slots on when there are numerous useful things to take.

Defense Up also needs to be stacked in large quantities to start adding hits to splat. You can test this in the firing range; for instance, the balloon with the 3 Defense Up mains on it takes 5 hits to splat with the Splattershot Jr. but everything else takes 4, meaning you have to blow at least 3 mains on it to protect yourself from that weapon and less is useless. Defense Up is made even more useless by the fact that people don't understand how Damage Up works and will stack it on non-chargers, meaning you're statistically better off taking other mods if you want something to actually help you.

tldr: Don't use Damage Up unless you're a charger, don't use Defense Up at all, use one of the numerous useful mods like Ink Resist Up (especially this), Cold Blooded, Ninja Squid, Stealth Jump, Ink Saver Main, Special Charge Up, Special Saver, or Special Duration Up

My favorite bit about Splatfest is that it'll give us plenty of opportunities to learn the new map. I played it against the Japanese a few times last night but I still don't quite know my way around. But from what I played, it seems like staying on the ground is generally a bad idea, like on Flounder.

By the way, protip: never play against the Japanese if you can help it, if only because of the lag. You'd think I'd have learned that by now but you'd be wrong!!!

I think you overlooked splash damage from any sub-weapon (particularly burst bombs), ranged roller flick, close-range charger tap shots, non-rapid blaster blast radius, falloff damage on shooters/splatlings at max range or shooting downward.

There are plenty of weapons and gear builds that don't need Damage Up (most shooters), but you're playing the metagame from July if you still think it isn't useful.

I mentioned Chargers already, and almost everything you listed falls into the edge case where the person already needs damage on them for it to help. Damage Up is junk as a main unless you're a charger because there are tons of main-only mods that give substantial bonuses, and I still question the utility of it as a secondary when for example Ink Saver Main exists.

But hey go ahead and wear that drat pink sweater, I'll be busy getting bullshit kills with my bottomless Dynamo Roller thanks to Ink Saver Main

Edit: Like dude are you even S-rank, I keep getting kills because people think I have useless mods like they do and think I'm out of ink after four strokes and charge right into it, and lol at anyone who puts damage up instead of ink resist or stealth jump on their shoes Edit2: Unless you're a sniper

It's useless and most the S rank people have moved on to the wiser course of action which is speed, stealth, respawn/jump reduction, and ink conservation with the exception of chargers because it makes an actual measurable difference there. Everything else is such edge cases in actual game play that it rarely amounts to anything. Moreso when you're playing with people (hi!) who make it a point not to stand close to enemy ink so all those pesky short range bombs & rollers aren't close enough where that 5% extra range actually matters.

The best rollers are the ones who wait for you to get too close to their ink/corner/box and run up on you and practically smack you with their roller upside your head anyway, not the ones desperately trying to tag you at the edge of their hit range.

Valid question because anyone who plays S-rank either actively bogs themselves down with that Squidforce Defense Up/3 Damage Up sweater or douchy Varsity Jacket or wears mods that give them an edge against people who essentially actively choose not to wear clothes at all.

Damage ups make Blasters a lot more dangerous, with 3 of them you can one-shot off splash damage if the target is in your ink.
You could probably one-shot with splash damage with full mains and subs, but I haven't been able to roll a loadout like that.

Yeah uh Damage Up actually can make a bit of difference if you are very familiar with the range limitations of your weapons. I use Krak-On Roller mainly and Luna Blaster depending on the mode/map, and I definitely prefer to have Damage Up. Especially since they are such popular weapons, it's nice to have an edge over rival users.
