I worry about getting public transit after midnight and before 5am. Most cities don't have that.

Are you really planning on taking a redeye or zero-dark-thirty flight to Korea? That's pretty unnecessary, considering it's just a 1.5-hour flight from ICN.

This site says the subway doesn't run during those hours: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g298566-i2803-k7415236-Operating_hours_for_trains_subway_etc-Osaka_Osaka_Prefecture_Kinki.html

This site says the first airport bus leaves the Umeda area (main downtown area) at 330-ish am when you click on one of the bus stops: http://www.okkbus.co.jp/en/index3.html

Also, stay away from Kobe and northwest Osaka for the next few months. I read in the news that there is a lot of gang drama going on right now over there, so it's best to stay away.

Last time I checked, it's sometimes a matter of $100-200 saved round trip to take a red eye. If I have to be inflexible and buy on short notice because of visa issues then I'd rather not pay double if I can go early in the morning or arrive late at night. If it means I'm paying $100 for a taxi from the airport then I'd definitely rethink things. I ran into problems finding accurate information last time I searched in English for public transit from there.

To back you up, Peach only makes about a dozen seats available during its "sales" and often times you must use the localized page, (Korean or Japanese) in order to get some of the deals. For a while last year during the height of the "OMG you go to Japan, don't you worry about radiation?" hysteria, you could get round trip tickets for a loving steal - less than 90,000.

Nowadays, you all should be checking more Korean deal sites. A friend just got a round trip ticket to Taipei for 170,000 from estar.

The fast visa run is apparently a thing of the past. Tokyo takes 3 working days and Osaka takes 4. Might be able to get it done Monday to Friday if I get early and late enough flights. Phone people, like all phone people except 1330, suck and are awful. Was asking how far it was from the airport and the Osaka consulate said I should go to the Kobe consulate.

Kind of weird question but can anyone recommend auction sites or online market-type sites where I would have luck tracking down older pressings of books? The collector in me has always been interested in tracking down original pressings of 이상's works or literary/poetry publications from occupation or military control periods. Might be in over my head price-wise but would still be interested in at least looking around.

Pinot did his in HK in a week, but I think he had something else going on too. If I had known earlier. Could only get in touch with two consulates. Others didn't pick up. Have to leave Monday so can't check. Japan is a pretty sure thing, but just updating about visa runs because people still swear it's 1 day and that there's a consulate in Fukuoka. Though Kant's Japan May Vary.

The other Japanese consulates didn't know and they never picked up their phone in the 3 times I called. Either way. Longer trip that I can't afford after a month of unemployment.

Anyone know if they give vaccines in Korea? Specifically, there HPV vaccine?

I'm a dude and had the first of 3 shots in March, in the states, while I still had insurance. I'm back in the states for a few months without insurance, and I need to get both of the remaining ones like, now.

Since I have to get both out of pocket without insurance, I'm wondering if I'd be able to just start over when I go back to Korea. Hopefully free, or subsidized.

He's asking about the Human papilloma virus, not the hepatitis virus.

I did a basic search and three shots of gardasil will set you back ~$300+ US. They don't really vaccinate men here yet, but I can't see it being any cheaper for men.

I'm going to be in Seoul for a month with a couple friends--what would y'all recommend for keeping in touch (with each other & in general)? Our American phones don't use the 2100 mHz band. Buying burners? Public wifi + katalk? Our apartment comes with a portable hotspot which is great, but is less useful when we split up.

ETA: my kakao is TheSpecialist. If someone could invite me to the group that'd be swell. :banjo:

Wifi is everywhere in this country. If you are in any touristy area of the city, there will be free public wifi provided by the city.

If you're not in a touristy area, then I'd say about 75% of all businesses let customers use wifi for free. Of that 75%, I'd say about half of them are passworded so that you have to actually buy something.

Also what the above guy said about buying an Olleh Wifi card at a convenience store works as well. The rate isn't very good imo but olleh wifi hotspots are literally everywhere in Seoul.

Bugblatter
Aug 4, 2003

The only caveat to wifi being everywhere is that a lot of it is provided by either olleh or sk, so while it seems ubiquitous to those of us who live here and are their customers, it can be a little tougher for travelers.

That said, actually open networks are still common enough that I did manage for several months here with no local sim.

Edit: also those olleh/sk wifi networks also mean that if you get a burner, you won't need as much data as you think as you'll be able to use their wifi most of the time. Its in all subways and most public spaces.

Does Korea allow foreigners to link adsense accounts to their Korean bank accounts?

Next semester I'm going to start assigning homework, and the assignments are going to consist of watching a youtube video and filling in the blanks on a handout. But also I'll have an ad on the video. I figure if 1/4 of my students watch it, I might get 500 views, which is worth almost $2.

Chuseok has passed, now it's time for AMERICA!

And lovely mspaints I threw together when I was supposed to be working

First off, SIGN UP ON THE SPREADSHEET HERE IF YOU ARE EVEN PONDERING SHOWING UP! Better to have too much than not enough food!

When is this shindig?
November 28th, Last Saturday of November. Bit late, yeah, but most teachers aren't going to get Thursday off or anything. We'll be setting up and cooking around 2 or earlier, so just show up whenever? Food will be served around 6 to 7. Also, all are free to come the Friday before and help cook or just crash out at my place. I have plenty of room and blankets!

MENU
This year we're going simpler, with down home cooking, grits, meats, casseroles and whatever else we can think of. Maxsmart has stepped up to be lead chef this year and I'll be supplementing him where able. That being said, if anyone wants to bring something or come over the day before and help cook, you're more than welcome, just note it on the spreadsheet!

How many bitcoins is this going to run me?
Previous Turkeyparties have ran donations-only but generally 10k to 20k won is typical.

If you don't have any cash don't let that be a deterrent though, tis the season for feeding freeloaders and I'll make up the diff.

Where's it at?
Since I've been movin' on up, this year it'll be smack dab in the middle of Itaewon!

Using Naver or Daum you can get directions fairly easy, but it's just a few minutes from Itaewon Station. Try 75-5 Itaewon-dong or 21-3 Itaewon-ro 16-gil.

Accommodations!
As always, goons are free to crash on the floor if they desire. Or fight it out for Race Car Bed. I have a futon, couch, and another bed available as well. Otherwise, Itaewon Land is just up the street as well as a few motels in the area. If you're coming from out of town and need help just ask in thread or Kakao and we'll figure something out!

Allergwarnings

I do still have Goon Favorite cat Pablo and standoffish priss Beyori. I'll be sure to do a good cleanup the days before to limit cat dander and hair, and will also have allergy medication on hand if it gets too much for anyone.
