Yeah, you are right. I was thinking of Paul Martin, who came to power in a similar manner and won re-election as PM of Canada with a much reduced margin (and then went on to lose a few years later.)

edit: See, now that is a pair of believable shadows.

Maybe there's a point beyond being aware of the history of cartooning where they're just admitting they have no original ideas of their own. This seems like the tenth time someone's referenced that one Low cartoon by now, can we at least get some new oldies?

TUC being a big white workhorse I think originated in Low's cartoons, but it's fairly common. They've been having their conference in Brighton the past few days from where vaguely anti-Corbyn soundbites have been wafting. And that allows Brown to bring in the metaphor of Corbyn being socialist all the way through, like Brighton through a stick of rock. I think it's probably for the best that you stick to Stalin/Hitler mate.

These are just names of Russian clubs. And apparently Crewe has a long history with railways.

The cartoon's position is that as much as an iconoclastic firebrand Corbyn might seem now, he doesn't really threaten the Establishment and he'll eventually be cooled down and doused and come to fit into the system. For all his noise he's still just staff with a boss who'll whip him into shape; "it's his first week" and he's yet to fully learn the ropes but with backing-down on anthems, councils and nukes he's already being taught how to act properly.

He's now in Boston, possibly working for some other rich family there (I don't exactly follow it closely now). Also his character was obviously written from the start to be a left winger who sees the light once he realises just how jolly decent and important the landed gentry are, this is Julian Fellowes after all.

Hah, they didn't even message that properly if they were trying to. I need to catch up on the last few seasons then, I guess, I missed him going to Boston or whatever it was. I used to like the show but it turned me off quite a bit recently, starting with the blatant anti-Irish racism about Tom's brother (shows up in ragged clothing, is rude, gets drunk. I mean it's exactly what I'd do but they really pushed the "heh typical paddy" angle), although I was impressed that they managed to have a rape subplot not be terrible recently.
