My guess is that it's as a tangent to concerns about structural unemployment due to automation. The transhumanist nutbars think of AI in way loftier terms than most computer scientists, economists or laypeople do. So when there's a news story that mentions AI, I would guess that it's more like, "they're gonna make a robot to take our jerrrrbs" rather than to usher in the World to Come.
