Going to semi-seriously suggest that you just leave your computer running.

My computer is usually running, but lol that wasn't going to work. ANYWAY I think I fixed it. I was able to restart and the tablet services were still intact and it started up with the cintiq plugged in. - I switched not only the monitors and ports but made sure that it recognized my regular monitor as #1 - While taking programs off of startup, I noticed a relic AVG updater pos that was still running even with AVG gone (or so I thought.) Apparently AVG and some of the drivers don't play nice. - Went into services and disabled the Tablet PC Input Services. I have also heard that this stupid Windows Ink crap will gently caress with your tablets as well. - Plugged the Cintiq into a regular USB instead of one of the 3.0 ports I had. Just to try something different, I guess. vv Now to get to work!

Yeah I figured you probably had a reason to turn it off but you'd be surprised how many people don't realize that computers these days can basically be left on indefinitely. Or maybe you wouldn't be surprised but you know what I mean :p

Use the sleep feature. Spare your processors, hard drives, and thermal paste.

I've asked in another thread about whether to leave my computer on or switch it off at night, and basically got 'whichever you like, doesn't make much difference really', so what would y'all say on the subject?

If you're not the type who re-pastes all your heat sinks and replaces fans annually, Delta Echo posted:Use the sleep feature. Spare your processors, hard drives, and thermal paste.

You're basically the first person I've ever seen claim that it matters. Can you cite any sources?

It's simple logic. If you let your computer rest 50% of the day, it will last twice as long as a computer left running 24/7. Do you know many people who build their own computers? Thermal paste dries up after about a year, and CPUs burn off their silicon over time. Fans wear out their bearings, and hard disk drives bake in their own heat. Heat is the cause of failed plates. Solid state drives as well as RAM have a finite number of read/writes. You'll wear everything out faster. You save on energy costs, too. If you're only looking to get two years out of a computer, sure leave it running, and there's no need to turn it off. But returning from sleep mode is so fast, it doesn't make sense not to use it.

Been leaving my computers on for the past 15 years and I have yet to run into any issues at all re overheating or things wearing out. I upgrade various parts every few years, but I'm gonna call those concerns hyperbolic based on my own simple logic.

This is the same guy who traces 3d models to make Disney's Frozen Porn... so his PC probably needs way more thermal paste, if you follow. I'm not sure he's giving anyone sincere advice.

No, I'm afraid I don't follow.

Also I was really asking if I should put my computer to sleep or shut it down when I power it down at night, not whether I should power it down at any point period.

Sleep versus power off doesn't make a big difference and it's not something to get worried about if you ask me. I find myself only really needing to turn off my laptop if I'm going somewhere with it and want to save battery, otherwise I just let it sleep.

Sleep/Hibernate on a desktop seems to do the same thing: Power down the machine meaning all the drives and fans are stopped. No noise, no heat, no power draw. I just sleep my machine when I too am asleep. Some used to argue that turning a machine off and on making it spin the drives to speed damages the motor as much as leaving it on and spinning, but I'm remembering a conversation from days past when Windows at least didn't have low-power modes for idle drives where they'd spin down No idea if that point was ever true or not and it doesn't matter anymore. To un-derail the thread and probably bring up more gossip from a month ago in August: Tons of rumors (I think all sourced from a single Tech-Something site) that the Surface Pro 4 will be announced on Oct.6th and come out as soon as ~3 weeks from now. It's more of a hardware revision of the 3 with Win10 if those rumors are to be believed. My laptop is only a ~1.5 years old, but I'm sorely tempted to find the scratch to get a Pro3 shortly after the Pro4 is released. Doesn't help that I ran into a friend from out of town a few weeks back and he had glowing opinions of the drat thing.

As far as I know no one has been able to show any correlation between HDD use and failure rates. I want to get a Surface because carrying my heavy rear end laptop around every day is murdering my back

So how's the Huion GT-190 tablet monitor, quality-wise? Frenden likes Huion's digitisers but I'm skeptical of anything non-Wacom because I'm tiresome like that and I can't find a review he did of that model in particular.

Bumping the thread to repeat the question. Worth it? Should I save up for a Cintiq instead?

I have a Ugee 2150b, which is practically identical to the Huion gt-220 but with uc logic digitizers instead of huion digitizers, and I like it a lot. Like, I can recommend it with confidence to someone who's looking for a cheap alternative to a cintiq, I got a bundle with the monitor and a really nice arm for it for $720.

Surface pro 4 actually looking solid all around. Every other version had some pronounced flaw, we'll see if this one does too!

No probs with drivers although I did take a while to get it working well with Illustrator. I havent got any complaints so far.

So how much exactly did they improve the pen on the new surface pro 4? Anybody got a chance to try it out yet?

So I just sold my 24HD mainly because it was taking up WAY too much space for the set up I had and the mobility was really bad. It was also slightly defected so I decided to downgrade to something a bit smaller. I got about 1500 for my 24HD because of the defect and now I'm trying to think should I try to find a used 22HD maybe? Or find a 2nd gen 21UX and have a little extra cash for a rainy day? What's the difference between the two? Is it a huge difference? I also pkan on getting an Ergotron arm with it. Any help would be awesome thank you!

Hi guys! I have a Yiynova 19mspu and I'm thinking about getting a monitor arm for it so I can use it easier (at the moment I have to set up a second temporary table any time I want to draw). It weighs a *ton* and I'd like an arm that's pretty versatile, does anyone have any suggestions? Would any arm that works on a similar sized Cintiq be suitable? Thanks!

Ergotron arms are pretty standard. It's the desk that is the strength question in that case.

Oh hey guys so my Macbook died a month off AppleCare after 2 previous repairs so I said screw it, sold my Companion Hybrid, and bought a Companion 2. I waited till after the Surface Pro 4 release date in Japan to see if anything changed before throwing money into the flames and I still don't like the Surface. So... I waved my hand over (not near) the screen while holding the pen to grab the warranty card while registering it tonight and apparently the devs aren't under too strict of code review policies there at Wacom...

Though to give them the benefit of the doubt, are you sure that your Stylus wasn't somehow already named fuckidy gently caress gently caress?

Ohhh, well, no. Says Art Pen on both tablets. And if I change it on one device it does not change it on the other device, which makes sense. edit: Also, who the gently caress spells fuckity as fuckidy.

The name isn't stored in the pen, it's written into the prefs file (references the devices' UUID against the file), so all of that makes sense.

Can you, or anyone else, tell me why the surface book or surface tablet is any better than the cintiq companion outside of the price point? I think the surface devices are still overall cheaper than the portable cintiqs but I could be wrong.

Same, except for the Surface Pro 4, speaking as a hobbyist; loaded up Clip Studio and I like it a hell of a lot more than my Intuos 4 on Vaio laptop setup, mostly because I no longer have that hand-eye disconnect you get when drawing on one surface and seeing it being drawn on a screen. Thought I'd miss the hotkeys but the touch controls I feel are a lot handier than the hotkeys ever were.
