The new Sarah Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O'Donovan songs are so good. We are truly in a modern bluegrass revival and it is led by Nickel creek people, imo.

You're drat right. They're setting a pretty high bar. I'm With Her is some of the best acoustic music I've seen in a couple years. No qualifiers. I really regret not paying more attention to Jarosz, she's just a hell of a picker. HenryJLittlefinger fucked around with this message at 03:31 on Aug 30, 2015 |

You know that Chris Thile, who is the mandolin player in the Punch Brothers, is p famous for other things so you might find some traction there. His solo album How To Grow a Woman From the Ground is great. Also, apologies if you already knew this, but he is also in Nickel Creek and they own so much.

Where do you start with Nickel Creek? Cause I first heard of them in high school from my friends who were into Dave Matthews type poo poo and never checked them out cause I didn't trust their opinions and wasn't into this kind of music then anyway.

Start with Nickel Creek at the beginning, and listen to Chris Thile's solo stuff alongside, also chronologically. Punch Brothers are drat good and Thile is a virtuoso, but I can't get excited about most of his songwriting. I recognize the amazing talent, but it's just not my stuff. I've seen him a bunch over the last 12 years, and my favorite show of his by far was with Edgar Meyer and they played all baroque and classical stuff. He's awful pretentious and clever with his own later material, and I think the last two Nickel Creek albums suffered for it. He prances all over the stage and makes faces and poo poo and it really distracts from the rest of the band for me. poo poo, I didn't even realize Gabe Witcher played drums, and Thile stood in front of him furiously humping his mandolin while Gabe was doing a pretty amazing violin and drum set performance. I guess that's what you can do when you're about the best there is. For my money, I'm With Her completely stole the show. I got Sarah Jarosz's latest solo album immediately and boy howdy is it just solid.

To be honest a line-up like that can be a lot of fun. I've seen a couple of those bands, and heard of some of that line-up based on performances at bars/clubs here in Knoxville (Eady is playing at my favorite bar in November here, and it seems American Aquarium plays here at least 3 times a year). That said we have a 3 day festival like this every April in Knoxville. It is full of small bands like on your list, but this year it was headlined by groups like the Decemberist, Drive-By Truckers, and Langhorne Slim and the Law. The smaller bands mostly played in bars (they was like 5 of them) located on the street than ran by the main stage. To be honest I enjoyed the bars more than the main stage. Also it helped that the festival organizer included a surf punk band, some rap (Gangstagrass, which believe or not was fun as hell live), soul music, and other genres to break up the pure Americana feel. Edit: A couple of Knoxville local acts on that line-up too. Black Lilies (which I am seeing on 10/2) and Scott Miller are both part of the Knoxville scene.

There's also usually an after-hours hotel get together where a lot of them just hang out with acoustic guitars + fiddles and jam and get hammered. For everyone that doesn't know, that's basically THE list of red dirt/texas country bands. A lot of bands from that list are very very well known in Texas/Oklahoma. Also shame on you for sleeping on Turnpike Troubadours! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTYq66Tx1GY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3jGkqcvR80 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lLZlufKuaQ e:I might have an extra hotel reservation. Paper With Lines posted:I had forgotten about the song Before the Devil Knows We're Dead. What a good one. Also more guitar-heavy. HenryJLittlefinger fucked around with this message at 21:13 on Sep 9, 2015 |

I was super excited that Avett Brothers and Jason Isbell were coming to Kentucky. Then I found out they're in one of the shittiest concert venues I've ever been to, Rupp Arena in Lexington. And tickets are $60 apiece. I'm really glad they've found success, but goddamn. I remember years ago when people had no idea who they were and I could get into a show in some tiny assed venue packed to capacity and see them play for $10.

I saw Old Crow and the Avett Bros a couple years ago at Red Rocks and the sound quality was garbage. Instruments were clipping throughout the show. Some venues just aren't good for that kind of music.

I foolishly just tried to listen to Spotify's "New Boots" up-and-coming country playlist. With the exception of a couple tracks (Cam's "Burning House" being the most notable), it was loving terrible. Are any of you keeping a spotify list of the various things that get posted in here that you'd be willing to share, or do we have a shared playlist like some of the other NMD genre threads and I missed it? I need some new stuff to listen to while I work, and having to constantly click the youtube videos in here is way too distracting.

The Weekend is pretty strong and I like Pilgrim. The middle kinda drags. Candy's one of those songs that's fine in concert but doesn't really need a studio version. Not sure why they didn't try to put Knuckleball Catcher on this one. It would have fit perfectly into the back half and pulled the whole thing together. I think that's a good tune, but maybe they're saving it for Gill's next record, who knows. But overall I like all the strings, kinda gives it an early Elton John vibe. Dave probably sings it as well as he can, the mix is ok but not what I'm used to with them.
