This reminds me of one of my funnier moments in Iraq. I was meeting with this Iraqi Army officer and after the meeting was over I briefed our officer on what was said, and went downstairs to use the bathroom. The Iraqi Army officer I had just met with was bathing himself with water bottles, likely to be clean before the evening prayers. The strange part was that he was standing in the shower, and the water worked. He also waved awkwardly at me. He probably just didn't know the water worked, but I had no translator with me to tell him.

I knew the Black Friday comparison was coming. That said, Black Friday sees one or two people die at different locations each year. The Hajj is always at the same city. You'd hope that might give the authorities an advantage, at least as far as tracking where people are most likely to be injured or killed and allow them to make necessary adjustments.

Seems like there is a problem of scaling here. The Prophet never imagined that there would be more than a billion Muslims in the world, most of them wanting to go on Hajj someday. There weren't even a billion *people* in the world in his day. This is just going to get less and less workable as world population increases and more prosperity means more people can afford global travel.

I have heard that the most dangerous bottleneck is the symbolic stoning of the pillars, because its not a very large location. I wonder how blasphemous it would be to add more pillars...

If memory serves, you are allowed to commission another Muslim to attend the Hajj if you are unable due to poverty or infirmity. Most faithful still try their damndest to attend in person, but it might be necessary to emphasize that practice.

Edit: They actually changed the pillars to a wall in 2004, so that people wouldn't miss and hit people on the other side.

If only there is a time to Hajj besides the five days during the Islamic month of Zulhijah. There's a lesser version of the pilgrimage called the Umrah that you can do anytime, but no amount of Umrah equals a Hajj in Good Deed Points.

Do Christians/Jews have similar holy days or rites that happen only on a specified Location at specified times?

I really wonder how you can fix the overcrowding in the Hajj process. Expanding the Masjidil Haram? 'Timetabling' the scheduled activities?

Or just nuke Mecca, as Freep recommends?

Nope, at least with Christians. Nothing that's as major, possibly due to Christianity's first few hundred years being on the lam.

There's pilgrimages to be made of course, but none of them are significant to being a member of the religion the same way (AFAIK) the Hajj is to Islam. A person can be born, live, and die a good Christian by every commandment of Christ without leaving a ten-mile radius in New Hampshire.

Christians and Jews make pilgrimages, but they're done for more personal spiritual reasons and not considered a holy commandment. Jerusalem gets pretty busy around Easter, for example, but nothing near the Hajj.

Freepers have no true understanding of the tenets of any religion, let alone Islam. You are 100% correct that taqiyya has become its own right wing meme that has no basis in anything. The right wing version of taqiyya is an imaginary concept where a muslim can pretend to be non-muslim for no reason other than it benefits them to do so. While this is a bit close to what some Shia twelvers believe, it is not even close to what the Sunni practice. For Sunnis, taqiyya is a concept only to be used if you are in mortal danger, and really only if there is some greater reason for your life to be spared.

There's the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, that's a pretty big deal over Easter and several other holy days for everyone except Protestants, but there is no general mandate that you have to go outside of some monastic orders.

In the Iberian peninsula many jews and muslims converted to christianity after the Reconquista and many of them held positions equivalent to ministers, even prime ministers. That only made them more suspect of being crypto-jews, it was by popular demand that the Inquisition got started to root out these secret jews that are loving up good christian folk. The nobility and high clergy were actually mostly OK with the converts and even non-converts because they recognized their value. To the common people they were competition at best or well poisoners at worst.

This kind of thing is only possible because you have a man from a minority race that was raised several years in a country with a different religion coming back home to become the ruler, this isn't a sequence of events that could have happened since maybe the Roman Empire. The closest I can think of regarding white people in the previous couple of centuries would be accusations of being a mason, maybe.

Also some of the 'converts' accused of crypto-jewry were second or third generation Christians. They had never in their lives not been a Christian, but their ancestry/ethnicity was used against them. You can see the exact same parallel in "Obama's Muslim dad!"

I applied for a job today. At the bottom of the application, for EEOC purposes it asked me a few questions. Am I am man or woman? Am I white, black, other? Am I a disabled veteran? Nowhere does it ask me if I am an LGBT. So how would a company know what a person is in order to discriminate against them?

It seems that everyone has their panties in a wad regarding the LGBT community. Why? The only ones who seem to be talking about LGBT are other LGBT's. Why are they being discriminated against? Who exactly is doing the discriminating? What is it they are looking for?

The other night, my daughter, who happens to be gay brought this to my attention. So I asked her. Who is discriminating against them? Her answer? Conservatives. So I asked her, "I am a Conservative. Have you heard me or any of my friends over the years express a hatred towards LGBT's? As a matter of fact, have you ever heard me or my friends talking about the gay community in general, aside from the fruitcakes in San Francisco who dress like lunatics and commit PDA in front of children?" No answer.

So I submitted to her that perhaps the reason LGBT's are up in arms about all of this is because of their failure in society as a non-LGBT and this is a way for like minded people to come together as a group and they want to be recognized. Or perhaps they are just mentally challenged and need serious therapy.
