As thinkers, most of us got our start in a community dedicated to the art of human rationality. There we crystallized our appreciation for reason, evidence, and awareness of one's own capabilities and limitations as a human thinker. We came to believe that there are better ways to think, and began to strive to train ourselves in them. We've since moved beyond that foundation, throwing out and replacing pieces of the philosophy as they were found faulty, placing a greater emphasis on political ideology and well-tuned intuitive judgement over feigned neutrality and formal methods. Still, the core commitment to sanity guides us.

In our studies, this commitment to sanity eventually came into conflict with the acceptable range of ideas on politics, social science, history, and lifestyle. The truth, we discovered, was generally ancient, harsh, inevitable, and to the extent that it impinges on the human political spectrum, very, very right wing. These are not the ideas that ingratiate one with the fashionable set, so we keep them to ourselves except among trusted friends or under the cover of anonymity, but our values demand that we face the truth, and speak it.

Hey, it wasn't until I read the manga of Death Note that I understood why anyone would ever think the bit of Roko's basilisk that goes "you simulate him simulating you simulating him" would even make sense as an idea. Because that's precisely what Light and L do, in an implausible-but-cool bit of the story. But I just enjoyed the book as a cool story, which is why I'm obviously from a low-IQ thede.

Also, reading it meant I finally got most the jokes in this.

Note also that "The Tragedy of Light" is the name of a play Draco goes to in Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, because of course Yudkowsky was putting in anime left, right and centre.

Yeah, yeah you bravely stand forward and face the truth.

I mean, I can't imagine a truth scarier than "I am naturally meant to be a god-king with a harem of brides due entirely to being born white and testing well on IQ tests". I mean, I would cry in terror if I found that out.

It's not being a fascist! It's being a Hard Man making the Hard Choices other people are just afraid to make, like their favorite edgy anime/videogame character.

So is that Warg dude saying that by removing actual rational processes in favor of gnosis ("well honed intuition") and various other established facts which can't be questioned as core ideological tenets, he became more and more horribly right wing?

Interesting.

Literature is not exhaustible, for the sufficient and simple reason that no single book is. A book is not an isolated being: it is a relationship, an axis of innumerable relationships.

I've just seen the episode and I have to admit, I don't get it. The key idea is PC meets bro culture. So there's people who look like Channing Tautum beating up Cartman for committing micro-aggressions while very carefully explaining that PC is about respecting marginalized cultures. And at the end, the message is something like, mean jokes may be a way of getting an important conversation going, but hey, it's still mean jokes. I don't know.

I think the atmosphere was just much higher in nitrogen, lower in carbon dioxide, maybe higher pressure. I'll check the appendix.

Skellybones

Fun Shoe
"The atmosphere consists of 90.9% Nitrogen, 8.5% Oxygen and .01% Carbon Dioxide. The low oxygen content results in fewer forest fires, a higher proportion of anoxic environments - encouraging a large anaerobic ecosystem reducing nitrates to break down organic matter - and a plant ecosystem dominated by the need to conserve carbon."

"Planet's larger size and gravity result in a significantly higher sea level pressure than Earth's: 1.74 atmospheres. This brings the partial pressure of Oxygen up to acceptable levels, but the high overall pressure combined with such a large quantity of Nitrogen produces deadly Nitrogen narcosis in unprotected humans."

The responses to these panels (that are not just outright threats) fall into two categories: the ones saying "online harassment isn't real, just turn off your computer", and the ones saying "these women are the ones doing the actual harassment".

The people making these contradictory responses are for some strange reason not arguing with each other. So strange.
