I didn't like Emily at first but everything between being left to die by her boyfriend (after he yelled at her over nothing while she was teetering on the edge of death) through her mine adventure and then having everyone turn on her over nothing really changed my opinion of her. She was really resourceful when she had to be.

BTW if you go back and say you hate Josh the most, he mentions how of course that's true and how you already know Josh is the one in the chair. I think part of the reason they make Emily so unlikable is so when faced with who you like least you don't spoil that Josh is the one in therapy.

Are we forgetting about Chris, the guy who can think he's killing himself for Ashley, goes back to try and save Josh, shoots the gently caress outta Wendigos left and right, and offers to be left behind due to his bum leg? At least in this playthrough, Chris is rad as gently caress. Only downside I could potentially see is that he's annoying maybe? But poo poo, that dumb little dance he did with the pellet gun in the beginning won me over immediately.

Emily isn't deep at all, but she runs the loving gauntlet of being dropped down a mine, meeting the monsters, surviving on her own, and slapping the poo poo out of Ashley after she instigated killing her with her only personality trait being she's incredibly bitchy. I didn't like her that much at the start, but she definitely earned my respect after the poo poo she has to put up with. Most of the cast earns their stripes by the end of the game except like, Ashley, who does gently caress all.

The entire reason Emily is the one in that watch tower collapse who CAN'T die and HAS to be the one to introduce the cliche 'she got bit WILL SHE TURN' drama is because she was designed to be disliked and it was meant to play on your urges as a player going 'yea but remember when she called her boyfriend a big stupid rear end in a top hat as he was literally saving her life'. Emily is a really well done cliche, like everyone else in the game, and her cliche is the kind of person who goes 'oh my god it was a joke' when their friend dies and calls her boyfriend a big dumb idiot as he's trying to navigate a rickety platform to keep her from dying. She's The Bitch, that's her role in the story. It's cool if you think she has good reasons to be a bitch at times (understand my hand in your face, or whatever she says when she bitch slaps Ashley was a solid rear end line) but to be all 'oh man I don't get why you'd dislike her' is real weird.

Baal does have a pretty good point. Most of the other characters actively do things that puts them in danger, whereas stuff just kinda happens to Ashley. I mean unless you count getting slapped by Emily as dangerous, maybe she's got long nails or something and that probably could hurt.

Emily is a jerk and just generally a real rear end of a character but I think I can make an exception for disliking her when they were literally about to shoot her in the head. After that moment, back to being unforgivable. Similarly, Kenny is the supreme shitter forever but my burning hatred for him subsided at least a little bit when he apologized to Clementine for being such a shitter in the first place (even if he did just kinda go back to being Kenny fairly quickly).

During the radio tower part, Emily does seem remorseful when she finds the posters of Hannah and Beth. When Ashley is talking about the prank, it's a player choice of whether she feels bad about it. A lot of Ashley's choices can go the way of being really passive aggressive, like lying about finding the information in the book. She is also the only person to intentionally kill someone (Chris) in some choices, which she also lies about. Mike really grew on me since chasing after Jessica. Any horror character who grabs a weapon AND a light source before chasing after a killer is good in my books.

Like Emily does have moments of characterization and her genuine fear give her a lot more than most blatant cliche's like her have, but that's all she and the rest of the cast are at the end of the day. If you don't like her, I can totally understand why, but like she's definitely got moments that humanize her and show that she is genuinely remorseful for what she did.
