so he just an engineer? iirc the sleep guys were pretty heavily involved with the mixing & mastering of that version, don't think he actually gave that big an input in it other than just turned the knobs.

but hey, i guess everything that helps you sell your poo poo is good.

In my band's case I believe the mixing is already done, and he's just the mastering. But I also have no idea how audio engineering works in the slightest.

mastering is honestly more of a technical process. my bands split was mastered by a hip hop / electro guy and it turned out great, mostly because he was a big analog buff and understood what we wanted from that perspective despite having zero interest in heavy music.

Breaking fingers like fractals
Mastering is the last step before an album is pressed. It's when the mixdowns (master tracks) are eq'ed, compressed, brickwall limited if desired, and maybe some spatial processing like a mid-side EQ (it equalizes the mid channel and the side channels separately, when you hear a release where the guitars are panned hard and sound like they're in a different "environment" then the bass and center vocals its usually been done). If someone is good at it they'll be able to nail any style, since not a lot of shaping needs to happen if the mix is good.
If it's bad, the mastering engineer is the last step to save it, and good ones can take a terrible mix and salvage it amazingly.

E: if any doom goons have stuff they want mixed or mastered hit me up. I took a little break from doing that stuff for other bands but I want to get back into it. I'm willing to master a song for free and give you a high bitrate MP3, and if you like it I can do more.

I did a year a Berklee, six months at the Recording Institute of Technology course in Hollywood, and ran my own studio for a number of years. My focus for other bands was Pop, rock and metal, and I like to make stuff sound very high end but I can do filth no problem too. I take a lot of pride in my work, and I've got an ear for matching tones, so if you want your song mixed like Grasping Air but mastered like Sunbather I can do it.

It looks like Chicago and NY sold out almost immediately, really glad I bought the tickets as soon as I got the email.

Chicago, PA, MD and NY. Maybe that means they will have to come back to the Northeast soon! They were opening for Metallica; the exposure definitely has been working out well for them.

It's most of on the ambient/post-something side of things, but I like.

I'm about a week late getting to it, but this is great stuff. I don't find it too post-whatever either, it's pretty straightforward sludgy stoner metal.

Yeah I don't know if I meant to link 2 of the things I'd been listening to or if I was just confused or maybe just high during an instrumental part. Now I see that I've posted it twice so I think I must have meant to post something else AND been high.

I was always kinda lukewarm on ASG, though I like some albums quite a bit. I'd already forgotten that when I was thinking "this sounds familiar" I discovered it's the guy from ASG and a guy from Thunderlip (who I don't know and should maybe now check out)

It reminds me of when I'm editing some company name at work and it's something completely stupid and uncreative like "GOOD BUSINESS, INC"

So what I'm saying is that these bands should consider getting on some government contracts because they'd fit right in.
