Soooo, after years and years of reading this and the previous threads I finally gave in and I'm going on a hike to ebc next year. Sadly it's gonna be during the fall season, so I won't have the chance to see those lunatics trying to be the first whatever to summit everest walking on hands or something. 22 day hike for around €2800. Anyone got recommendations for a good winter sleeping bag?

I'd recommend talking to the guiding company about gear questions, at least to get a sense of what temperature rating you'll need?

I like my Big Agnes down sleeping bag quite a bit. If you only think you'll use it for this trek, you should be able to rent a good one for around $30 instead of the $250+ it will cost you to buy a good down bag.

The second-to-last piece of equipment I'd want to rent is a sleeping bag. (The last piece is thermal underwear.) Unless you can be sure it's never been incorrectly washed, incorrectly stored compressed instead of hung uncompressed, and is in perfect near-new condition, I wouldn't trust a used/rented sleeping bag to still be at its rated thermal protection... and if you show up to the rental place that day and they only have the one bag they've reserved for you, you may not have the option of picking one that hasn't been used much.

When it comes to down bags, you should also get a liner. The liner goes in the wash as-needed: the bag only gets cleaned strictly according to its instructions.

I don't know brands (any more, the last time I needed a bag like this was in the early 90s, lol) but prices range from $40 to $800+, so it's probably a good plan to check a lot of reviews and stuff. Major factors are weight and compressed volume. Prices also vary by length, and you should get a bag that is just the right length for you for maximum performance and comfort. This might not be the best thread for alpine gear advice, this is the GBS Everest death spectator thread.

Huh. That'll have some implications to go with it. Would the japanese dude that's failed to summit twice now fail to get a permit now? How disabled is too disabled?

If you have to be carried/assisted up you're too disabled. so presumably no more dragging Asian-Canadian women to the summit who've never so much as used a crampon before by sherpas either.

The real question is what 6500m+ peak will become the new burial grounds training grounds to carry people up, so they can qualify for everest and pay for the second expedition package?
