Ok, cool. See ya' next week!

Didn't watch the day of airing. Some of us have (sad, very sad) lives.

Nora's horseman should have won the competition. Evan's was good but it didn't read as Death to me and looked more like War, if anything. I think it was the overuse of red in the entire character.

LOL at Ben staying with that off the rails War make-up.

I was a fan of a lot of the makeups this week, perhaps because this theme is right up my ally. Definitely the strongest showcase so far though it's not saying much. It's nice to have the breakthrough.

Evan's War is my favourite makeup of the season. I'm so glad that the judges didn't rag on him for not being 100% anatomically accurate.
Nora's Famine was good but she could have matched skin tones more.
Scott's Death was a stellar looking mummy.
Meg's Pestilence was good.
Jordan's War's face sucker didn't really make sense conceptually but it was painted well. At least he got to fabricate!

I'm not getting what Ben did with his chest piece? He said it was a full body makeup but it looked like a vest? I'd say he was the worst but Kevon has justifiably been worse overall.

I agree it was a strong week. I really thought the death mummy sculpt was excellent... he really captured that shrinking wrinkly look. I was not a huge fan of Meg's execution but the concept was interesting.

Starting to feel like Nora is the chosen one for this season. A lot of her stuff is really meh but the judges are always gushing over it. All the safe make-ups looked way better than lobster-man, which was probably the laziest thing on stage.

I liked Evan's? I mean, the concept wasn't great but I didn't mind the execution. I don't know how much more you can make a moon out of a person unless you're not doing it physically. The judges don't seem to like any moon ladies. I'd say Meg deserved to get booted (finally, apparently). Last week was a good place to pull ideas and execution techniques but her gore looked like wax or crystallized.

Man is it just me or has the judging been VERY funky for the last few episodes? Usually I agree with the judges for defined reasons, but now it feels like I'm going "WHAAAAT" more than anything.

I like Ben, I think he does good stuff but.. winner? Really? I pegged him for being back on bottom looks. And I thought the one that lost was possibly the strongest on stage; it might not have fit the challenge but by God it was better than the other crap. That worm-parasite looking ice should have landed the other girl on the bottom too. What the gently caress is going on?

It feels like people are getting bumped for good stuff, and being lauded for producing poo poo. I kept hearing them talk about how great Ben's was as the only upper look, and every time it panned back to his I was like "... what the hell are you guys talking about?"

I disagree, Ben was on of the few that actually understood the challenge, the point was to do carnival freaks and Ben did that perfectly. It was not over the top like most of the others, and it was also done very well. Meg's poorly done skinless gorilla deserved to be at the bottom.
Scott and Ben are my favourites to win the competition.

Yeah I still like the show but the Producer interference is really smelly this season. The sound clips are much more obviously edited than usual, and I smell some fishiness in helping out some of the contestants on the d/l.

At least they got rid of that bald actor rear end in a top hat right away. You could smell that he was full of himself and wasn't on the show's wavelength at all and is basically why they booted him first chance they got after realizing he wasn't going to be a team player.

It's Focus Challenge night! Let's see how many disastrous faces we can count.

Tonight's another SyFy synergy theme by promoting some show called The Expanse. Kind of like Defiance back in season five. I have no idea what happened to that show. Interestingly the challenge isn't "make an alien" but instead "make a human that evolved in the wrong natural disaster." Then again, that's wide open for aliens.

I'm strongly getting this feeling, and the show is worse for it.

I loving hate focus challenges. 2 day challenges are a waste and everyone's work turns out like poo poo, yet they've been cranking them out constantly. Then the eliminations lately have gone totally off the rails. Face/Off usually felt pretty fair before, though you'd get an edge if you had done well in the past. I never found myself going "What the gently caress?" after the judge decisions, maybe but once a season, if that.... this season has been constant.

The ratings I noticed took a hit this season too, from it's consistent norm. What the hell happened?

VendaGoat posted:

Holy gently caress.

I was pulling for Ben but it feels like his stuff has been rear end for a few episodes now. Then again, 2 day challenges would have utterly ruined most of the previous competitors, too. And because there's so many 2 day ones, when the 3 day ones DO hit, nobody's in the groove; usually you have a season begin with a few 3 day challenges and everyone's stuff gets better as they adjust to the tempo.

gently caress, these 2 day things aren't even a full two days. It's really a day + last looks. I'm not SFX expert but I DO recall them talking about how much they need that extra day so they don't have to use lovely foam over latex and stuff; has anyone noticed how they NEVER mention that this season? Yeah, nobody has time to make the right call.

Coyote Ugly posted:

To me, focus challenges are coming off as "We slashed your makeup budget and maybe also slashed your filming budget, make loving do assholes."

He has been on the bottom a few times, but he has also made some of the best work this season, and i don't think he was the worst this week.
Something really lacking this season is that there is no one who really stands out, in the past there have almost always been 2-3 people who were consistently excellent, but it hasn't happened this time around.

Speaking of Ben, this could just be a random person on reedit but the name was "benplowguy", and it has some interesting info in it if it's actually coming from someone who worked on the show.

quote:

you correct about the time crunch. our season was probably the shortest in regards to shoot days. we only had 2 months to complete the season when most have 2.5 to 3 months. we barely had days off. it got pretty rough at times. as for the focus challenges and the gauntlet, i agree with you. i didnt really like either one of them. les than 3 days was just to little time to conceptualize, in my opinion. and focus challenges i hated. but i hate them for my own inadequacy. i just didnt do well with them. i dont know this officially, but its been suggested that the focus challenges were specifically designed to shorten our shoot days. also, every season the budget is cut. this goes for pretty much every show on television.

another thing. i consistently see people complaining about the contestants, having week areas in what we do. EVERYONE has week points. yes, painting is part of the profession and knowing beauty is part of being a well rounded artist. but we have to keep in mind that the people that are cast on this show are still very early in their careers and arent exposed to every aspect of the job immediately. it takes time to develop your craft. i'm not a beauty artist. but i enjoyed what i did on the show, it may not have been great, but it was passable. i was also, not very good at painting before i got on the show, but i learned a lot and improved from the experience. Another thing... you dont have to be a rockstar of EVERY aspect of the job to be successful. there are countless professionals out there that dont know poo poo about making a mold, but they can apply a makeup like nobody.

ultimately i disliked the new challenges, but i do feel like they are a good test of the contestant's skills and adaptability. and i think it makes for a more dynamic viewing experience. its definitely time for some changes to the format.

sorry if my rambling is incoherent. i've had a frightfully small amount of sleep in the last few days.

This would explain a lot. I wonder why the show would be on such a time crunch. If anything the show needs to take much longer breaks between seasons. They're produced almost 10 seasons in half a decade, that is ridiculous output even for a reality show.

Based on that reddit post I don't think Ben's going to make the finale. It would be weird to have a winner not be happy with their work/consider it mediocre. Two people are eliminated tonight and he's been close recently, though he seemed to start the competition well and I considered him a candidate to win.

Evan's edit has picked up since the gauntlet and Nora's got the whole 'conceptual meltdown turned into top looks makeup' going. Jordan's a sleeper who's not bad but hasn't been considered amazing. Scott's the guy with experience and the resume to pull it off.

I'm predicting

1. Evan
2. Nora
3. Scott
4. Jordan
5. Ben
