Came back after a good long break, the majority of players at lower tiers are still bad. I do like what they did with the match-maker though. I rarely get in a 3 tier difference in battles.

8" guns can citadel hit a stock hull Fuso, and if you hit the right spot (too small to aim even at point blank range) you can citadel hit a Myogi even with HE. There are a few others especially if you're a Zao. There's also a pretty good range of battleships where you won't citadel hit, but should fire AP anyway. New Mexico and Warspite are examples, but not the only ones. 6" AP generally isn't worth it against battleships.

Am I right thinking that Cleveland's guns are low velocity and so their penetration is bad and so it not really worth to shoot AP at any time? The Clevelands AP is still useable against Phoenixes, Omahas, Pensacolas and really any of the Japanese cruisers. Under like 8km or so where your trajectory flattens out you will turn those botes into a colander. Anything else I would pretty much stick to HE.

I usually shoot AP ant atlantas and pensacolas.

Note that if you have 8" guns it can be worthwhile shooting AP at battleships even discounting citadels, if you know where to shoot. Because while you will virtually never get citadels, even before the patch, plenty of areas on a battleship are perfectly possible to penetrate with 8" AP, and getting a decent number of penetrations will do far more damage than an average HE salvo. Not to say HE isn't generally preferable due to module damage and fire BS but if it's what you happen to have loaded, or you're in the middle of cruiser hunting and just don't want to bother briefly switching, you can still do pretty decent damage with AP. Also, while it may or may not be possible any more, I have gotten a citadel on a Colorado recently with a Myoko, so even US battleships are not/were not necessarily perfectly safe from that. Given the area my salvo was landing, I suspect it hit the magazine hit box, and just didn't cause a detonation. There's apparently a very small section of armor right below the #2 turret that only has 25 mm of armor on it and, if the shell came in at the right angle, it could have arced down into the magazine.

Shoot AP at cruiser sides from less than 10km. edit: beaten. replied before realizing there was a new page of posts.

Daily WoWS at about 1100 GMT. e: NA server. Me and my buddy just rushed middle because we knew our Taiho was going to be nuked (and he did get nuked). Sunk an NC and almost sunk DM but Midway was being a jerk. Aesis fucked around with this message at 14:28 on Oct 1, 2015 |

Just got the NC again and I really, really love this boat. First game out and I dunked 5 Tripz players in 6 volley. One of them was out at/around 20km range. Had a really lucky RNG roll and the shots clustered nice and tight right into their citadel. Lots of hackusations for that round. So many bad Tripz. All of them firing HE.

Aesis posted:NC is good if the RNG is in your favour and enemy is dumb enough to go straight for 10+ seconds, otherwise it sucks due to slow projectile speed and high arc. Conscious enemy gets plenty of time to dodge with minimal shift. I do like NC but I hate its slow rear end projectile speed Most of my lineup is US so I'm really used to the high, slow arcs and have gotten really good with dunking a lot of different ships with plunging fire. It's surprising how very few people actually move, or to even guess which way someone is going to turn if they're being observant. Can't wait for the British ships to come in.

I see they extended the Tirpitz sale. Also, put Atlanta "ranked battle pack up". I need a premium for US grinding/crew retraining. Definite silver problems, with lots of expensive ships pending purchase. I want the Atlanta, but I know it can be up and down, since everyone knows shooting them makes them go boom. Anyone that has it can you weigh in on your average credit games? The fact that there are so many bad Tirpitz players around, almost guarantees me to make some money each game, but it won't help me with any captain training. As I have essentially every other line in the game, I'm not eager to start the german cruiser line as well. What would you invest the money in? jownzy fucked around with this message at 15:15 on Oct 1, 2015 |

jownzy posted:I see they extended the Tirpitz sale. Also, put Atlanta "ranked battle pack up". I would say an average game with premium will net you 350-400k credits. Good games will be more like 500-600k. Even a poo poo game where you die early will probably get you something like 150-200k. This is mostly earned from killing destroyers and raining HE salvos down on battleships every 4 seconds. If they someday buff the xp/credit gain for shooting down planes expect this to improve. I think it's a nice ship that works best when your team is good, or at least when the enemy team is busy shooting at your teammates. It does poorly on its own charging in, because even if you survive you'll probably be at low health and missing a bunch of your turrets. It has fantastic long-range AA that makes it great for escorting vulnerable battleships, and is probably the best non-CV destroyer killer in the game. Oh and the torpedoes are surprisingly effective against dumbass battleships drivers that go alone into clusters of islands (one full salvo each into a Nagato and NC. It would have been 8 torp hits but the Nagato died before the 4th one hit him ). edit: I haven't played mine since they buffed the HP on 5" turrets. Maybe now you're less likely to lose one turret every salvo. Godlessdonut fucked around with this message at 16:36 on Oct 1, 2015 |

Thanks for the info, my biggest reason to get it would be to retrain crew. I think I can be sneaky enough with it, I play with a destroyer mentality. I should probably just get both. This game is way better than Navyfield ever was and I put a lot of money in that piece of poo poo.

I fully upgraded my St. Louis last night... it is an absolute beast, even in a fight with Tier IVs. Took down two Tier IV BBs basically solo last night... I don't know how people can get to Tier IV without knowing how to shoot/maneuver/repair, but there it is. Of course, NOW the grind hits. I got to the St. Louis in my first evening playing (roughly 3-4 hours), but now every battle takes twice as long to fight and each XP goal is also twice as large. It's the same thing with tanks, except I'm super glad I'm sticking with mediums (CAs) and not going with heavies (BBs) like I did in tanks. Not going with premium this time around, at least not yet. At some point I will, given that I'll be sitting on a mountain of elite XP that will need conversion. Is it a good idea to just buy and level every ship I can (even CVs and Destroyers), in order to maximize my daily win bonus income? At least until I hit Tier X US Cruisers. How much would it cost to buy that many ship slots?

So playing this game has piqued my interest in naval history, and I got curious as to whether any of the ships my grandfather was on were in the game. The first ship he was on was the USS Vincennes, which was a New Orleans class heavy cruiser which was sunk (with him on board, harrowing story) by a force comprised of the Yubari, Tenryu, Furutaka, and Aoba at the First Battle of Savo Island, part of the Solomon Islands. Afterwards, he crewed the USS Santa Fe, a Cleveland class light cruiser. Now I really want to focus on grinding out the Omaha to get the Cleveland. It's interesting to play the game and think about all the actual history behind these boats.

I find it's easier to get Confederate in Cruisers, which are good at doing some damage to a lot of different foes during a match in concert with other boats, and harder in BBs and DDs, who tend to decisively nail a few boats. It's easier to spread out damage with rapid fire chips and DoTs than get 6 separate good chances to torpedo the gently caress out of someone or 6 separate decisive engagements in a slow BB.
