The Rifftrax redos have been great, but I think that's because they've mostly been doing stuff where Mike wasn't the host, and Bill wasn't Crow (Manos, The Magic Sword). Though I will say their recent take on Santa Claus—one of Mike's earliest episodes, and probably my favorite—didn't disappoint. There's just a lot of new jokes to tell in the 20-25 years since these episodes aired.

I like that "Guy From Harlem" is sort of becoming a new genre.

Like how "Last Slumber Party" is the Guy From Harlem of slasher flicks.

"Guy From Harlem" would be a genre even if it were the only movie in said genre.

I dunno, they could probably come up with new jokes that are just as good. There were some hilarious things added to the live version of The Room that weren't in the original riff, namely "hip dick".

What I really want them to do some day is Disco Godfather, because holy poo poo that movie. If you liked TWO THINGS in Guy From Harlem, get ready for THREE THINGS

also ANGEL DUSS

It's a legitimately enjoyable movie so I'm not excited to see them rip it to shreds or anything. I'm just happy to see the movie again (and for the first time on the big screen) and whatever short they play beforehand.

yeah, it's an amazing film. can't wait to hear how a couple of the jokes play out tonight ;)

i was always rather confused as to why Drafthouse Films had the licensing for the film the way it was once the picked it up. I remember talking to the Alamo guys waaay back and they seemed to really love the MST3K/Rifftrax folks, and I figured they would have cut them a super-awesome deal. I always got the impression that they sort of picked the film up BECAUSE of them. At either rate... things look good now, and maybe this means we'll be seeing Dangerous Men next year! ;)

Paste Magazine just put out an interview with Y.K. Kim about Miami Connection and tonight's Rifftrax.

This guy is like the anti-Tommy Wiseau.

quote:

Paste: The actors in it, they were all your students? What did they think of the finished movie?

Kim: Yes, everyone was my student and nobody knew how to make a movie. I had thousands of students at the time, though. I promised my students that I would show them the movie in a theater, so there was no way to stop it even if I wanted to stop it. I made a promise.

quote:

Paste: So what do you think of groups like RiffTrax that mock a film like Miami Connection for entertainment, then? Will you be watching?

Kim: I really appreciate them, because without them they’re not going to show the film. If they can make the audience happy, I think that is the most important thing. Of course I’ll be watching. They will make very much fun of me, but that is the freedom of this country.

YK is a cool dude. I had the chance to talk to him a few years back. I still remember the day when I saw YK's name and face on bill bartolone's webpage. It was like a merging of rifftrax and found footage festival.

I'll have to upload some bill bartolone tapes from the 80s one of these days...they're insanely hilarious/bad.

Miami Connection was good but sorta what I've said about doing cult movies - they hold up on their own so there's a ceiling of comedy you're gonna hit.

That said - fuckin' Measurement Man tho.

It has a lot more personality and a sense of fun to it, plus it doesn't have the unpleasant undertones of The Room or the downer 'gotcha' ending of Troll 2.
