The only thing I've read of Patrick Ness is his contribution to the 50th anniversary short story collection, "Tip of the Tongue," which was fantastic and by far the highlight of that little project, so if he wants to do a show I say go for it. He does an amazing job of writing believable young adolescents.

I'm guessing Jenna Coleman is going appear in Class at least as a recurring character after she leaves Doctor Who. Unless, of course, she gets a bad ending when she leaves, like Rose, Donna, and Amy/Rory got.

In addition, there's going to be a compilation on Blu Ray of the ten Christmas specials.

EDIT: There's already a TV show called Class. It's a sketch show on CBBC. One hand does not know what the other hand is doing!

I can see her showing up in the first episode, but after that she'll probably be done. She's been wanting to leave the main show practically since she signed the contract so there's no way she will stick around for a kids orientated spin-off.

Yeah, but if she really did want to leave the show, she would have at one of those points. There was nothing keeping her there aside from her own decision to stay:

quote:

Here’s what Moffat told Doctor Who Magazine:

“That was her last episode. And then she asked me if she could be in Christmas? So I said, 'Okay, I'll write you out in Christmas.' She came to the read through and did the 'write out' version - and again changed her mind.”

“But the truth is I never wanted her to go. I didn't really want Death in Heaven to be her last episode. And with Last Christmas, I'd already written the alternative version where she stayed, and I preferred that version. For Christmas Day it's a bit nicer. Frankly, I didn't want to lose her. She's an amazing actress, and she never stops working to make Clara better. I was very happy to go the extra mile to make sure we could keep her.”

Coleman’s ultimate decision to stay on for series nine (after first deciding to leave) makes her the longest-running companion of the modern Doctor Who era. Last year she explained her decision for staying at a post-screening Q&A like this:

“I couldn’t walk away with the story being unresolved, there’s so much more to do and I think [Clara and the Doctor] have finally just reached a point where they really understand each other.”

I can't remember where I read it, but the scuttlebutt is that she wanted to leave the show after Matt left, under the principle that she didn't know if she could work as well with another actor. Then halfway through the Capaldi season she decides its a fun gig after all and likes working with him, leading into the wait-no-shes-staying bit of Last Christmas.

The weirdest thing about Coleman is that in most of the interviews about the show I've seen her in, she looks uncomfortable while doing it. There was a bit of an interview after the Death In Heaven 3D show with her and Capaldi, and her I-Don't-Wanna-Do-This was palpable. Granted, it was Wil Wheaton gushing at the two of them for ten minutes, so I can understand why, but drat.

In a completely different track, my rewatch of random episodes of NewWho made me realize something: the 10th Doctor really needed his own unique TARDIS look. The grungy coral look worked for Nine, the vibrant almost-child-like color scheme worked for the Ameila-Focused 11, and the colder metal one worked well for post-Pond 11 and the more older 12. But 10? 10 got Nine's TARDIS look which didn't work for a Doctor who was basically having a midlife crisis.

pretty fucking embarrassing to watch
Its on BBC3 which isn't aimed at Children but has a remit to provide "innovative content" for 16-34 year olds whatever that means - although I'm in that range and have never watched the thing and no one I know does which suggests that it might not be totally successful. It does suggest something more down the Torchwood route (that started out as a BBC 3 thing) though I think it might be some weird mix of the two. Its meant to go online only at some point thanks to BBC budget cots; so this thing might be one of the first new commissions for an online-only BBC service. It'll still probably be poo poo though

Also what's this poo poo about someone stealing the third episode of Web of Fear, and why am I only hearing about it now?

I mean, it's not, but I guess I just assumed that for someone who was a huge fan of those two, it would still be exciting news that would overcome any prejudices about the format.

(At least in this case it is prejudice, as she hasn't listened to any audio dramas.)

Also, in a way, I don't really get blanket-disliking any medium for storytelling. A story is a story.

Audio dramas do require a little more clarity/attention- it generally doesn't matter if I can't quite make out the lyrics of a song, but if I miss some key dialogue in an audio play that's more of an issue- but it's not hard to find the time to listen.

I hadn't listened to any audio dramas because I didn't think I'd like them. Then I did, and I realised I was right the first time. If I'm not doing anything else while listening to them I get bored, and if I am doing something else I get distracted by whatever that is.

Different medium have different structural conventions, different strengths and weaknesses, and different methods of audience interaction. I like comics and I like opera, but I'm not going to suggest either of those have universal appeal.

Right, but if you had a friend who you didn't think would like opera, but they loved two specific actors who were doing an opera together... would you not recommend it to them? That's more what I meant by blanket-dislike, like, not even giving a medium a chance even if it is presenting something that would appeal specifically to you.

I'm not saying that everyone should like every medium.

I'm not sure The Eleventh Hour is necessarily one of the best episode of the revival: Matt Smith hadn't quite found his stride yet and it felt like Moffat was still struggling with tone and pacing too. It is a great jumping on point for newcomers, however.
The series 5 Christmas special, A Christmas Carol was a pretty stellar episode of Doctor Who that doesn't need much context for an outsider.
