Does anyone have a pool B permutation worked out? Is it if Scotland lose their next two, and Japan and SA win their next two then it's SA and JApan through?

I think even watching the Scotland - Japan game you could tell that Japan had it for the first half and were looking good, they just got hosed by being tired 50 mins in e; it's a shame cause I think with a proper schedule Japan would have it in the bag. dex_sda fucked around with this message at 15:28 on Oct 3, 2015 |

At good form we could definitely have won the Scotland game. Not easily, but definitely in the cards.

I'd be surprised if Scotland lost to the USA. What if Scotland somehow beat SA though?

If Scotland beats SA then SA is as good as out. If SA beats Scotland then it looks like Japan is going to finish 3rd due to bonus points (SA had a losing bonus point in the match against them and Scotland a winning one)

I wonder is someone has backed Japan/Scotland to be quarter-finalists. You wouldn't have had to put much money on it for a quality payout

Honestly were Japan even serious candidates for third place before this tournament?

Oh Samoa, maybe stop being poo poo with no points on the board rather than grumping at Japan about being poo poo with no points on the board.

dex_sda posted:Honestly were Japan even serious candidates for third place before this tournament? Not really, no. Despite wins over Wales and Italy, winning tournaments like the PNC, an increasing presence in Super Rugby and cracking the IRB top10 a couple of years ago, a lot of it was hand waived away with a "yes, but." They'd also failed to win a single fixture at a World Cup since 1991, making them perennial wooden spooners at the tournament. They're also let down by being the 800-pound silverback gorillas of the Asian region.

I've only just noticed that Japan don't offload. Ever. No wonder the clear outs are so good if the supporting players don't have to look for the offload. It makes sense though, establishing new offside lines repeatedly will catch a lot of teams out. Samoa certainly haven't been able to cope, they've had 4 or 5 offside penalties.

In all the physical set pieces Japan are bossing it. Against tonnage such as Samoa's it's incredible
