I just liked it a lot when I heard it, and the existence of stuff like Cockney rhyming slang makes it seem plausible to me. I sincerely hope it's the origin of the phrase because people unintentionally engaging in pun based humor is funny.

I'm three episodes into Symphogear. It's entertaining but it's definitely got issues with tone, and it feels kind of cheap at times. I hope the later seasons are as crazy as Endorph says.
