In principle they could cast their votes for any Republican nominated if no one has a majority on the first ballot and force a winner, but if it's like the initial vote, it's a roll call vote, so Republicans would catch on pretty quickly and any Republican with a last name after, say, D, could change their vote before getting called on to prevent that from happening.

In practice they'll let the Republicans stew and all vote for Pelosi except for a few Blue Dog holdouts (Dan Lipinski, a Blue Dog, is one of the usual suspects, and fellow Dogs Kyrsten Sinema, Gwen Graham and Jim Cooper also defected at the beginning of the 114th)

The only leaks have come from Wikileaks and they're dubious, both due to the source and that the negotiations were ongoing at the time. Now that the deal has been finalized and parts of it are being officially revealed it actually looks more progressive than people claimed it would be.

I've got a better subject: INSIDER TRADING AT DRAFTKINGS!!!

quote:

A major scandal is erupting in the multibillion dollar industry of fantasy sports, the online and unregulated business in which players assemble their fantasy teams with real athletes. On Monday, the two major fantasy companies were forced to release statements defending their businesses’ integrity after what amounted to allegations of insider trading, that employees were placing bets on information not available to the public.

Last week, a DraftKings employee admitted to inadvertently releasing data before the start of the third week of N.F.L. games, a move akin to insider trading in the stock market. The employee – a midlevel content manager — won $350,000 at rival site FanDuel that same week.

The incident has raised questions about who at daily fantasy companies has access to valuable data, how it is protected and whether the industry can — or wants — to police itself.

Theoretically, yes, but it would play poorly with the Democratic base and undermine current attempts by the Freedom Caucus to disrupt the process.

Speaking of which, Boehner officially delayed elections for Majority Leader and Whip hours after Scalise's team announced that it had locked enough votes to secure the Majority Leader position. The delay is a major blow to Scalise and increases the likelihood of a right-wing challenge. It also adds an interesting dynamic for future leadership races:

quote:

Boehner's move to delay the elections also raises another huge issue for Republicans. The nation will reach its debt limit on Nov. 5 -- around the same time the party will chose its new leader and whip. If Boehner attempts to hold a debt ceiling vote before the speaker election, it could be a major problem for McCarthy. If it occurs afterward, then one of McCarthy's first fights as speaker is to over the contentious borrowing cap.

Also, Chaffetz is being mum with his supporters but claims that at least 50 Republicans will not support McCarthy for Speaker. Normally, I would dismiss this as posturing, but Chaffetz is acting really confident for a man that everyone considers to be doomed.

And while I am here, let's talk about another struggle for power: The Catholic Church's Synod of the Family. The Synod had its first full day of discussions and there's rumors swirling about an imminent showdown over divorce and gay marriage in the Church. Earlier today, the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith fired one of its prominent aides after he revealed he was homosexual. Given Francis's decision to uninvite several conservative opponents and stack the Synod's membership in his favor, there's signs that members of Benedict's old clique might start lashing out.

I wouldn't expect Francis to mandate gay abortions for everyone, but the consensus is that he's trying to drive the Church as far and fast as he can before his opponents can mobilize.

Sen. Lindsey Graham is asking for federal aid for his home state of South Carolina as it battles raging floods, but he voted to oppose similar help for New Jersey in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in 2013.

"Let's just get through this thing, and whatever it costs, it costs," Graham told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on "The Situation Room" on Monday of the devastating floods in his home state.

Graham was among the Republican senators who opposed a federal aid package in January 2013 to assist states hit by Hurricane Sandy, but now he doesn't remember why.

"I'm all for helping the people in New Jersey. I don't really remember me voting that way," Graham said.

Pressed further, he said: "Anyway, I don't really recall that, but I'd be glad to look and tell you why I did vote no, if I did."

Graham described himself as a "pretty kind-hearted fellow," and said he'd heard from South Carolinians, Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York.

Graham said he tends to "try to be there for friends and neighbors, so hope they'll be there for us."

Many Republicans opposed the $51 billion Sandy relief package in 2013 because they said it included too much spending on unrelated programs.

So if the TPP turns out to be pretty reasonable as some rumours suggest, will people in D&D who were convinced we're hosed based on rumor going to admit they were being ridiculous? You know, like we all wish the GOP would do over basically everything? Or will they Lindsey Graham it and say they don't remember it that way...

There is of course the possibility that it's hosed and if so, the people arguing to calm the gently caress down and wait to see what's been negotiated will get to eat crow. In which case, I'm sorry and you were right

I'm already seeing reports that many provisions of the TPP have changed from the draft versions; for example:

quote:

Environmentalists had criticized the Obama administration after a draft of the environmental chapter of the trade agreement, made public in January 2014, appeared to signal that the United States was retreating on a variety of environmental measures in order to advance a trade deal that has been a top priority for President Obama.

In particular, the draft showed that Michael Froman, the United States trade representative, had pushed for but failed to achieve a requirement that the pact’s signers abide by existing environmental treaties, which have few enforcement provisions.

But the final deal includes that requirement, along with new enforcement methods. It also places new limits on wildlife trafficking and subsidies for illegal fishing.

It doesn't seem impossible to me that those changes came about as a result of public pressure giving our negotiators more leverage; "Look, our people will never accept this, see? You've got to give me more..."
