Like I said, it stopped registering for me early on since I started with Toei's Kanon, and then Air, and then Kyoani's Kanon, and etc. Arguably Toei's version of Kanon probably broke my brain early on. The directorial choices between the two versions is also why I'm inclined to think Kyoani did have a big hand in polishing up Jun Maeda's stories.
