It's like walking in to buy a new pair of socks and walking out with an entire new lounge and kitchen package on a payment plan that you didn't tell your wife about and are gonna stall for a month until the bill comes through and hope she doesn't notice.

So with a bad dairy deal isn't that kinda good because we were always relying on dairy and now other markets have opened up? Or is dairy just that big that nothing can compete?

Did you know the Polish are super privileged white people who don't have their own culture and have never been held down by anyone? Amazing.

Look, all I'm going to say is, we sent a guy that tried to cheat his way into a WTO job by taking a peek at everyone else's notes and still failed. By that metric, you could argue he did well by not getting lost on the way to the meetings.

From what I had heard the Americans had moved a long way on the copyright stuff, like they'd wanted 12 years (we currently have 5) and I think they'd come back to 8. That was in Hawaii,so possibly they've budged further idk.

Copyright will be extended to match the US period of 70 years. You're thinking of data protection, wherein the testing done by companies to gain market approval for a drug cannot be used by another company to get market approval for the exact same drug even if the patent has expired on it. The US period is 12 years on biologics, but they have apparently agreed on a minimum 5-year period of data protection on the understanding that the approval process will bog down competitors for longer than five years anyway. You can still get market approval before then by paying to do your own testing. The reason it was an issue is because the US is currently the only country that has extended protection for biologics over those covering new chemicals, and the US renews protection whenever you register a new use for an existing chemical. That latter part will probably make its way into the compromise so companies can loophole market protections by 'discovering' new uses for their drugs in their exclusive testing.

Reminder that the only reason we even went into these talks was to get free trade deals with America for our dairy industry, which they failed to get. Good work lads, you really knocked that one out of the park.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/72767975/police-presence-at-university-of-otago-after-anonymous-gun-threat It really confuses me that someone would actually bother threatening Otago Uni. I mean, of all places... It hasn't really been mentioned here so I'm guessing it's either a complete non-story or nobody outside of Otago actually cares (both) but hey. (I'm kind of glad I'm on the other side of the world so I don't have to make that decision of Do I go to class or stay home "just in case"? Thus admitting that I actually believed it)

Unions are bad because they subvert the power of the meritocratic business owner class, and a pooling of power to production workers is of course the requirement for a communist revolution and then we'll all be the USSR with broken factories and lines for bread because idiot factory workers don't know how to run a stockmarket.
