It looks like the Nexus 5x is the same width as the 2014 Moto X, so it is still able to be held reasonably with one hand.

Blackberry Priv can shoot 4k ( who cares ) and comes with "SafeGuard" for security. http://mobilesyrup.com/2015/10/06/blackberry-priv-can-shoot-4k-video-and-will-come-with-blackberry-safeguard/ Maybe the one thing that might make me still consider this Blackberry is their "security" angle if it's legit. But if you look at the screenshot in that article, it's just a loving gauge that tells you if you have Dev options enabled, device encryption turned on, and a screen lock. I suppose it's convenient if you just don't know about poo poo like that but it really doesn't offer any sort of extra security if you already have all that poo poo enabled/disabled anyway. Security related, as I'm hovering over the checkout button for this gargantuan 6P, is that apparently Huawei sold lovely routers a few years back and other chinese items like irons & kettles come pre-hacked from the factory. An example is an iron with an unadvertised WiFi chip in it that scanned for open networks and then dialed back to China for...profit? Probably old news ( 2012/2013 ) but I'd never heard of it. This is probably just and everything is made in China anyway, and a lot of poo poo has changed in 3 years. "The most controversial routers come from Chinese telecom companies ZTE and Huawei. The House Intelligence Committee released a report in October 2012 warning American businesses to avoid the two companies due to security risks. Similar warnings against Huawei, in particular, have been upheld by governments around the world, including in Taiwan and Australia. “China is known to be the major perpetrator of cyber espionage, and Huawei and ZTE failed to alleviate serious concerns throughout this important investigation,” said Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, in a press release. “American businesses should use other vendors.” Huawei has launched a public relations campaign to fire back, yet independent research has only justified concerns. Just prior to the report from the House Intelligence Committee, in July 2012, security researchers at hacker conference Defcon uncovered critical, and extremely basic, vulnerabilities in Huawei routers. “This stuff is distrusting,” Dan Kaminsky, a well-known security researcher, told International Data Group News Service. “If I were to teach someone from scratch how to write binary exploits, these routers would be what I’d demonstrate on.”" http://www.theepochtimes.com/n3/366229-pre-hacked-electronics-come-straight-from-chinas-factories/ TollTheHounds fucked around with this message at 20:28 on Oct 7, 2015 |

Honestly, good for Blackberry and finally making a flagship phone with Android. More manufacturers/competition is always needed to push the likes of Samsung/LG along. Realistically though...nobody is gonna buy that thing. Blackberry's reputation in the consumer space is pretty tarnished at this point.

They continually spread FUD regarding China and Chinese companies. However I'm sure that Huawei isn't completely innocent. Fortunately there's probably enough eyes on this device that any kind of rootkit out spying will be outed pretty quickly.

Honestly, it's a bit of a hypocritical stance to take decrying Chinese goods for potential spying concerns when the NSA routinely intercepts network equipment shipments to install hardware bugs in them. Everyone is spying on everyone. Any anonymity you feel is pure illusion.

Help, I think I'm lost, is this even the right thread Would anyone care to explain how Samsung would possibly benefit from splitting up its next flagship line into both Exynos and Snapdragon 820 models? Has there been any precedent for this? Why different processors for different markets? Wouldn't it make more sense to pick the better chip and stick with it?
|
# ? Oct 7, 2015 23:36 |
|
They've done it before
|
# ? Oct 7, 2015 23:51 |

In the past they've done it because Snapdragon chips had superior LTE support for some markets, not sure if that's the reason for their next flagships split though.

I'm trying to back up my pictures manually (not using Google Photos) before upgrading to M final from the Dev Previews and I'm just not finding them when I'm exploring the file system on a Windows machine. They are not in either DCIM or Pictures folders no matter how I mount the phone MTP or PTP. The details menu of an image in the Google Camera app says it's in /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/Camera but nothing is there when viewed on a computer. What is going on?

MTP is a pain. Better off downloading them with AirDroid or something that can actually see the filesystem for reals

Is voice recognition determined through software or hardware? My Note 5 has no problem picking up "Farnswood Lane" when I say it into Google Maps, but my wife's iPhone doesn't understand when you say the same thing into Google Maps. Hers picks up "Farnsworth" or "Barnswood" every single time. Is it because Google Maps isn't as good on Apple or because her microphone is older and not as good or something?

So I just switched back to Android after two years of iOS. I'm slowly getting used to it again (spent forever trying to find the alarm volume, nearly blew out my ears yesterday morning) but for the life of me cannot find a mark all as read option in the gmail app. Does it even exist? Doing a Google search can't give me a straight answer or gives me information for a previous version. On LG G4 if that helps

With the exception of always-listening hotwords like "OK Google" all voice recognition is offloaded to the cloud. If Google Maps is using the native API for voice it will be processed by Apples servers instead of Googles on iOS. Needless to say Apple has a lot less experience with that kind of thing repiv fucked around with this message at 00:56 on Oct 8, 2015 |

How does the Marshmallow update work? I have a Nexus 6 and saw that it released a few days ago and it still hasn't showed up on my phone. Does the update come randomly or does it depend on when you got the device or something?
|
# ? Oct 8, 2015 01:36 |
|
It depends on your luck of the draw. And your carrier. Updates go out in waves, and this also applies to Google's own app releases too. So if your carrier has said they've started pushing it out, and you haven't seen it in say... two weeks then I'd worry something is up. Otherwise just wait. Especially for the 6, there isn't a huge change going to Marshmallow. You could also just go flash the update manually, though by default that'll wipe your device.

So, I think I'm just going to keep my N5 for now. It still runs great, is getting Marshmallow, and has wireless charging. Plus the built-in magnets make for a kick-rear end magnetic car dock. I feel almost lost. Am I... going to keep my phone for 2 more years? It's not even about the money, it's good enough / borderline better than current alternatives. I feel like my inner child is dead.
