Serious question, if Boehner gives a poo poo about his party and the country why not pass a clean CR and a clean debt limit increase into 2017, both would easily pass with democratic votes, step down and let the battle royal begin without any chance that it seriously damages the party with a default or government shutdown?

It's possible that he might, especially if the chaos in the GOP caucus is particularly bad. But doing that would make any chaos worse and badly breach the trust between establishment and Tortilla Coast members of the House.

Frankly, all of Boehner's options are bad, and we get to watch him try to navigate the shitstorm and laugh.

At this point, Congress accomplishes little more than the bare minimum required to maintain status quo governance.

In the House, even this pathetic level of activity places the onus on Democrats to supply most of the votes for routine legislation.

Democrats vote unanimously, in coalition with a minority of Republicans, to do the handful of things Congress actually does.

Under the circumstances, there’s a logic to electing a Speaker via coalition. A GOP Speaker, who’s liberated from the Freedom Caucus.

This person might have to make some nominal concession to Democrats, but the output of Congress would go basically unchanged.

More of the above:

Of course, this won’t ever happen. Partisan realities are solidified. But that is ultimately the source of the Freedom Caucus’ power.

If one GOPer were willing to make the sacrifice, or Boehner were to stick it out for his elected term, Freedom Caucus would be neutered.

Instead they’ll play whack-a-mole until a candidate emerges who’s willing to make insane promises, and then try to deliver.

Which is a lovely outcome for everyone involved, except for this particularly loathed minority of Republican House members.

What reason does Boehner have to care about chaos in the GOP anymore?

If he's the kind of person who can be inspired by the pope to quit being the speaker hopefully his conscience won't let him allow a default either.
