I really have no idea what the call would be if the fielder and runner both never touched the bag. For sll I know safe is the rulebook call. I would think it would be whatever the call on the field was, but apparently not.

If they reversed the force call at second, Utley would have been safe. Him not touching the bag is kind of irrelevant, the replay official has the authority to place him at 2nd regardless.

I love how it took only one month for there to be an even worse injury on an even worse slide. They're a loving epidemic and way more common than home plate collisions ever were.

Well, it partially is. If Mattingly doesn't get the other incorrect call overturned its still a tie game

Yes. Rarely, but the umpires probably hosed up procedure, and that's basically the only time a protest gets upheld.

the last successful protest was in 2014 when the Giants got a rain-shortened game restarted

unfortunately there's no justice in sports so we'll go out in order and have to win in NY and utley and the dodgers will celebrate this game

This is right. He was out when he left the field. Had there been no call, he would have been able to touch base.

Didn't he discuss something with the umps after the first review? Not that we know what was said, but I thought he went back out there for a chat.

Cool, I don't remember that. I would still bet my life savings MLB wouldn't do poo poo in this scenario.

Seriously though, if you are sliding at second and you miss the bag you should be out regardless of anything else because clearly you were just trying to gently caress up the fielder at that point.

I thought so, but it wasn't very long. He was probably discussing the procedure on the review.

Craptacular!
Jul 9, 2001

Fuck the DH
I thought the point of adding extra umps was preventing poo poo like this.

New York sportswriters can interrupt their usual making GBS threads on A-Rod to poo poo on Chase Utley for a while.

That poo poo would have been flagged if it happened the NFL and instead Utley got to go back to second after a review.
