Good buy. Can put you into USAR or serve as a good starting point to branch out into vanilla Ariadna. The army pack also gives you some terrain to start with.

I don't regret buying the rulebook, but it kind of depends on how much you're interested in the fluff. There is a lot of fluff and the art is very pretty - I consider it better value than, say, a Warmahordes rulebook in terms of fluff, though the Infinity fluff is more about the overall setting and less about character stories (which Warmahordes has a ton of).

And is Operation Icestorm actually worth time and money, or is it a trap like GW starter boxes?

Icestorm is superb value if you've got people who want to play those factions (Nomads and PanO).

It does, the choice was between that and the 3 other starter boxes. Now your next step would b to decide if you wanna go vanilla (lots more variety, no link teams) or stay pure USAriadna (limited to USARF units, more themed/specialized, access to link teams).
- safe purchases for both options are: Traktor rems, Dozer, 112, Warcor, 1 Hardcase
- USARF-themed next purchases: Grunt special weapon box, more Foxtrots*, more Marauders*, [new] Kum box**
- vanilla-themed next purchases: Spetznaz HMG, Chasseurs***, Cameronian, Galwegian box

* rifle Foxtrots (the best variant) only come in the big box so you'll need to split another box with someone or convert the LGL Foxtrot, it accepts extra rifles well. As for Marauders, you'll have to split the box AND convert. I'm using a Sekban HRL to proxy the launcher for now.
** to convert as Desperadoes. Google the concept art and greenstuff away, by the time they get actual minis you'll want a second box anyway and the new Kums are very similar and generally awesome sculpts.
*** same as the Foxtrot, the rifle Chasseur is starter box-only and very much in demand so buy immediately if you see one for sale. Or give a spare rifle to the ADHL one.

No. I got them but 1. I'm a fanboy, 2. I had the previous books and knew what I was getting into, 3. I prefer having a physical rulebook in higher quality, and 4. limited mini :v:

quote:

And is Operation Icestorm actually worth time and money, or is it a trap like GW starter boxes?
It's just 2 basic starters and you get 2 extra minis for the price. If you want one of the factions and you can split the box, definitely. You get the most recent (i.e. highest-quality) sculpts, intro scenarios, some terrain and markers (forgot to mention that the markers are available from the downloads as well and should be on the list to grab).

The pawsting business is tough work.
Thanks for the help, everyone. One last question, the Ariadnans get the big wolf dudes in place of the giant robots everyone else gets, right? As big models = more better, are they actually worth the points or should I start looking at PanO or the Nomads for my robot needs?

Corbeau

Big wolf dudes are probably better than this game's big robots, but they operate very differently. TAGs (the big robot-mecha things) tend to work best in particular types of scenario (usually holding ground). They can be worth their points in the right situation, but they're not something you bring in every game. Wolf-dudes, in contrast, are something that you probably can bring in most any game.

You are correct that Ariadna does not get TAGs though, aside from one particular exception that does not apply to USAR or vanilla Ariadna. PanO is likely the best TAG faction, simply for variety and quality, but Nomads have quite a few interesting TAG options at the cheaper end of the spectrum (like Geckos).

there is a rumour going around that I have found God. I think this is unlikely because I have enough difficulty finding my keys, and there is empirical evidence that they exist
Ariadna actually has rules for TAG'S, generically anyway. So a low tech TAG may be coming Ariadna's way at some point, unhackable of course :smugdog:. Speaking of giant dogs it is probably one of my best purchasing decisions to wait in hope they would make better models of the existing Antipode duders because all of the new sculpts are far, far superior.

Get used to it, combi Aswang is still THE go-to LT model for Shasvastii and since I started playing we haven't gotten a model (we did get a spitfire one though) not a BS LT loadout with N3. :wtc:

Had my first game in a month or so playing 200pt 20x20 (against the guy who made it no less) trying out ol Le Meut in combined.

He's pretty hilarious against Ariadna, though eventually dropped to a HMG. Other than that played my standard datz, shrouded and spec. As per usual, shroudeds ended up doing all the heavy lifting and the speculo flamed out on one order. Took out a bunch of Kazaks and his lt though, so pretty good returns.

The Avatar does that too, even without the feet-in-ground bits. I can't understand how CB went from that to spitfire Gwailo that'll fall over when you look at it from the wrong direction.

Yep, a bit on the pricey side, but without MSV he's a fiend. Two wounds too.

Had to pony up a bit of cash for him though, from some Russian(?) prepainted site. It came out to less than the ITS bundle, and the painting is fairly basic but it's nice to have. Came up to around $20usd.

I didn't trust the Avatar enough to not totter over the moment I set it upright. Had to chuck a few wads of green stuff and it's feet. It just feels so top heavy.

^, I was fortunate enough to win mine, but a bunch of the guys here want to run him and actually want a miniature as well.

Yeah, they really need to redesign and resculpt the Avatar though I think, it's aged pretty badly (my opinion at any rate).

Anyone in this thread run GMLs/SMLs much in N3? I haven't really tried them yet but I want to start adding them back into lists.

Hortism
Oct 25, 2010

Closest I've come is the Smart Sniper Rifle on the Haiduk. I think it's kinda cool now how it's a F2F roll so they can't dodge unopposed, and although the ML is not EXP anymore it's at least DA and retains AP unlike the other template option. It's easier to mark something now as well with FOs being B2 and hackers being able to mark out of LoF.

Flipswitch
Mar 30, 2010

Yeah, my only issue is the current increase in hackers means you'll see U-Turn until you can eliminate said hackers. It made the Haiduk a bit unwieldy when I tried it and I only really managed to get one actual smart shot off because of it. Might've just been poor luck, I need to field it more often but the new Drones arriving next week has made me think on SMLs again. I do definitely need to test it some more.

See, I find stuff like that ITS list on the CB website (or my own vanilla Haqq ITS, or the Ariadna camospam) as being far more obnoxious than the TO Sergeant list I posted here. A couple of MSV2 dudes will rip through this like a hot knife through butter, and if you can't deal with it then Steel Phalanx was going to ruin your day anyway. A balanced 20-order list, on the other hand, is just going to shut you down in every possible way if you can't compete on the same grounds. TO spam is funny, but I really don't think it's good compared to order spam.

For biotechvore in particular, I think that a Magister link would be much better.

In JSA you can take a Rui Shi, Lu Duan & Weibings, but they aren't the highest AVA. I'd just take a Rui Shi and Weibing in every list I ever made tbh, they're pretty good. Otherwise I'd follow Corbs advice and take smoke to obscure objectives as you take em.
