I didn't really want to bring it up since it would inevitably steer this thread down a dark path, but it just seems to me that there's a direct correlation between the people that regularly whine about "loving fujos" and those that can't seem to shut the gently caress up about Tsuyu. Especially earlier in this thread where it was pretty clear there were some Mineda-like creepos that delighted in her "secretions". I like Tsuyu as much as the next person, and it's because she's got a great design and chemistry and her straight man comedy slots in so well with everyone else's, she's competent and strong without it being shoved in your face like other heroines. She's an amazing character and I'm glad she got voted as high as she did, but I'm not whining or gloating about it. Shut up.

I freely admit I'm one of those disgusting fujoshi fangirls and that Level Slide and I might have had a bit of fun with those pixiv fanart translations, but that's kind of all that was: fun. We've shut up fairly well after some people clearly lost their poo poo. For the record, I don't like Todoroki all that much; he can stay wherever he is on the poll.

Don't ever google search or go on tumblr/pixiv looking for fanart. You are not going to have a good time with the poo poo people write and draw exclusively about her and no other female character in the cast.

Tsuyu is a good character, but people seem to like her rather disproportionately to this. Like, nothing about her makes me think "OMG THIS CHARACTER IS SO AMAZING."

I don't think (at least on these forums) that it's due to some sexual thing, though; I think it's more that people find comfort in agreeing with others, which leads to a sort of snowball effect where a bunch of people will feel the need to express the extent to which they agree with a popular opinion. It's basically the exact same cause behind any situation where people (especially in nerdy hobbies) jump on a bandwagon.

Either way, while kind of silly, it's not causing any harm.

Don't get it twisted who your enemies are.
Horikoshi designed a bunch of really interesting side characters for whatever you'd consider the "main group" to interact with. What sticks out for me is it's really refreshing to see that so many of the female characters are interesting, well designed, and aside from whenever Mineta's involved, not unnecessarily sexualized. Tsuyu just happened to catch on because she's extra quirky, in a good way. Same with Ashido and Mei. It's easy to vote for Bakugou or All Might because we see them all the time, but I find it impressive how some people can be so grumpy about a side character getting what they perceive as "too popular" or whatever.

The only characters introduced in this manga so far that I can say I Do Not Like are Mineta and Shigaraki, and in Shigaraki's case he's clearly intended to be the villainous version of the students at Yuuei and grow as the series progresses so maybe by the end he'll be awesome. I don't have that same hope for Mineta.

Dunno why people value Tsuyu so highly, she's a decent character and was often close to the main characters, but a bit boring. Also reminds me too much of the Ring girl for some reason. More interested in seeing more of the other poisonous girl, that one with the horns.

Though first place in the polls should have gone to someone else, because Hagakure is transparently the best

Boring? :colbert: Not saying Mina isn't also awesome, but c'mon.

With regards to the excellent cast in this series, I do hope we actually get to see what Sugar Man and "Petting Hero Anima" (wtf) can do in this arc. They're the only ones in Class A that haven't shown their powers yet, right?

Aesthetically she's interesting. That is honestly the biggest reason, and why you get examples like this:

Roland Jones posted:

Anyway, I think Tsuyu's popularity is in part because she seems to be one of the first characters a lot of people saw here. Like, I found out about MHA after seeing those pages of Tsuyu in various poses and stuff, thought she looked neat, and asked what she was from. Heck, I saw that art of her circulating in multiple communities before I encountered anything else from the series; I think that it took off over here prior to the comic itself getting a lot of attention and possibly being one of the factors drawing people to it. She's also a character who's been both funny and cool in most of her appearances and has an interesting design. It's not surprising she's rather popular.
I'm sure someone a lot more educated in art than me could go into specifics, but her design looks unusual and pleasing, and she has a decent character to back it up.

Mineta is not the author's self-insert.

All he said was Mineta was fun to write because he's a bit perverse himself, acknowledging in the same breath not everybody cares for that sort of character so he's gonna try and reach an agreeable balance.

I agree with most of this, though I also quite like Shigaraki because of his design, and because I like that he's such an awful brat; he's not like a lot of villains and he's definitely going to learn and grow, albeit not necessarily in a "positive" direction, as the series goes on. Also, despite being a fan, I do enjoy seeing him be thwarted repeatedly.

I think the top of his costume is open, like Kid Flash has. If he had normal hair it'd be showing through the top, but because he has weird grape-hair that he's presumably chosen his costume color to match, it looks like a seamless connection. I assume they're not sticky while they're still attached to him, so it's no big deal for him to just pull the costume down over that. The costumes in the series are generally pretty well thought-out, and for most of them you get the sense that the character really sat down and thought about what could help them harness their powers better (Jirou's speaker-boots, Bakugou's sweat reservoirs, Momo's waist being exposed so she can actually synthesize stuff). You'd think Kaminari would have thought to include something he could actually channel electricity through offensively, but having a self-powered headset is a nice touch.

The idea that clothing stores all need a tailor on-hand is a nice touch of worldbuilding as well. I'm sure there's tons of people that need considerable accommodations for clothing. Poor Shouji has to wear ponchos to keep warm.
