Your brand of stupid is fun and zany, his brand of stupid is sad and gets channels banned and as far as I've ever seen he hasn't shown any regret or signs of learning from those experiences (although tbh I don't stalk him on twitter or anything to have the chance to see such potential for change).

On one hand you want to see them not take themselves so seriously that they ban all fun but the other part of this is that as this stuff raises more money and becomes more public they have a duty to the organizations they raise money for to prevent some weird kid from pulling a stunt that goes viral and makes everyone involved look really bad. Every 6 months seems to ratchet the odds up and we just seem about due for someone to make some rant at 4AM on Thursday when everyone is half-asleep and nobody cuts his mic for 45 seconds. At this point it basically behooves potential runners to stop doing poo poo for dank meme lulz in public if they want to get a run in because they're apparently vetting people pretty hard now.

I personally don't mind GDQ getting more 'formal'/professional because as funny as it is to watch a grown rear end man say incredibly insensitive poo poo in front of more than 100 thousand live viewers on a charity event it detracts from what they are trying to do in a negative way. There's a lot of awkward nerds there but that's not an excuse for acting like a completely unadjusted rear end in a top hat who has no idea what sort of effect his actions have on others.

Honestly the number of people who want to attend has evidently been growing so much that any excuse they can use to thin that out more is helpful. They still don't seem to have that much bigger of a core of trusted volunteers and it was already murderously difficult to keep together when it was much smaller. So some people find out the hard way that they are stupid kids but it can't be helped.

They should add another event during the year and split up people so you can have the usual recluses playing 6hr JRPGs and have the chill dudes cut loose and get drunk without worrying about hurting some manchild's feelings.

Well, there are a ton of online marathons that are more loose, something almost every month though a lot of them I don't find out about until they're mostly over. I could use a better method than 'look in my chat log to see if anyone said something lately'.

There are a lot of smaller events now where this stuff kind of happens (Dueceler's marathon for example), it's just not at the GDQs anymore.

goldjas posted:It'd be cool if we had an actual Ys game at one of these events, although the problem with them is that you can't turn cutscenes off (as far as I know) which is a huge shame because besides that fact a few of them are pretty good speed games. It's not like there aren't tons of other games run every year that have unskippable cutscenes. I think it's probably more a problem of the games generally being about a 2 hour long speedrun of a series almost nobody has ever heard of, which seems like a tough sell. I haven't looked at the submissions list though so I don't know if anyone even submitted to run any of them.

Dizz posted:Jesus poo poo I hate this event more and more every year. Yeah gently caress it, since it's not happening, here's the run anyway in full. The guy is an absolute loving savant at the character and has like what, 600 hours on the game according to Steam? Dude basically routed the character and found all their speedtech along with a shitload of glitches from the ground up and the result looks ridiculous. It's an extremely technical and as I can attest to, really loving hard run. also the dude runs on Hard for no reason I can discern over than showboating how good he is. It's a real shame it got rejected over what I assume is just "it was ran at SGDQ this year already" because Milla is a completely different kind of run. I mean, I'm somewhat sympathetic since the sheer loving quantity games that gets submitted that have be filtered through means there's absolutely no way they could provide a detailed explanation of why or why not a game got chosen, it's just not logistically feasible but absolutely nothing at all and the ensuing total slaughter on round 1 results in an uncomfortable ambiguity where it's not clear if people just did things wrong with their submission, if the game is no good, if the game was ran at a recent marathon already and it's kinda just a "maybe try again next year" thing (this what I assume SH 1-2 and Freedom Planet got denied for but I don't have any actual way of knowing that) or if it's just getting the short end of the "too many games not enough time" straw. I'd love to assume the latter two most of the time because I'm kinda just positive about this sort of thing, but it's pretty clearly not the case a lot of the time. I mean, you can apparently go bugging people on Twitter for an answer but that's kind of a weird dynamic for a few reasons, nevermind the fact the answers I've seen read like getting a form e-mail. I don't really have much of a reason to be butthurt about any of this since I didn't submit since there is absolutely no way in hell I would be able to afford the cost of going but it's still weird seeing this all sort of unfold around you. GNU Order posted:My roundabout esports run made the first round of cuts This may seem disingenuous after having whinged myself inside out a paragraph up about the submission process, but seriously, good poo poo dude. Roundabout's one of those games I tried running for a bit and was kind of thrown by how hard it was so I've got an amount of appreciation for that game. show us some real electronic sports CrashCat posted:Well, there are a ton of online marathons that are more loose, something almost every month though a lot of them I don't find out about until they're mostly over. He just got a WR on golf and then hours later is rejected because the game is "too repetitive". It's a 10 minute run for crying out loud, and it isn't like Jon is some kind of awful runner. According to him he had the biggest growth in followers of any runner last GDQ and second biggest the GDQ before that. So it isn't like people hated him or something. Saying a game is repetitive when it is an NES game that runs under 15 minutes is really bad, especially since other fairly dull games than run way longer than that will inevitably make it. There are boring parts of Zelda runs that last longer than 15 minutes. uhh there's nothing boring about someone swagging by swagging swag controller during two and a half hours of Yoshi's Island swag by swag hentai sponsored swag streamer clutch swag .

I'm looking for a GDQ run for a game I totally forgot the name of. It was a 2.5D shooter, which had the quirk that the player character moved *crazy fast*. I think it had some cyberpunk theme, and there was a virtual reality bit. The game was also buggy and bad. Any ideas?

While I'd prefer AGDQ supported MSF over the Prevent Cancer Foundation, early detection of cancer is pretty important for the cures we have now and will save a lot more lives than research in the short term.

It should be noted that we're planning on a public discussion of a different AGDQ charity after this AGDQ2016 (probably about a month after). Obviously a lot of people wanted us to change, but we have contracts and arrangements made several months in advance, and we weren't looking to make major changes while Mike has been out of commission. I can't say we definitely won't go back to PCF in the future, but we're definitely going to discuss it and listen to the community's opinions, as we did a long time ago.

There are a small handful of non-GDQ events, both irl and online, that manage to scrape by under the baleful glare of the secret speedrunning cabal, just keep it low-key before Uyama finds out https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/board/community_marathons_and_meetups.html SGL's calendar is another good resource for upcoming events http://speedgaming.tv/calendar/
