I got my Pound Puppy playsets as a runner up prize from a Nickelodeon Sweepstakes (I think it was Nick takes over your school?). I was a lucky kid.

Nice! I remember as a kid entering a contest for some Beanie Babies, and a CN (I think) contest for a Kirby pillow, but I've never had any luck with contests. Of course, the luckiest kids were the winners of the Nickelodeon Super Toy Run. I'd be psyched to win that even as an adult, honestly.Tiggum posted:These were incredibly popular with kids at my primary school, and I've never understood why. Still don't see the appeal. And they had these really tiny mini ones that I thought were cute.

Laser tag in general, but in particular my sister and I owned this set, I had the 2 handed rifle and my sister liked the pair of pistols. Two other families on our street had kids with these same sets so it made for some really great summer nights. I remember all the little tricks, turn sideways to obscure your chest pad. Hold your hand over the gun's speaker to muffle the shooting noise and conceal your location.

A lot of people remember the Kenner action figures based on the cult art house movie Aliens. Less well-known was a range based on the Predator franchise. The entire series was made of surprisingly detailed figures for the period, including an Alien Vs. Predator 2-pack that had arguably the most movie-accurate sculpt of either character for some time. Neca, who have been producing some really nice figures based on both series' for some time, remembered the line, and released several figures in homage to the series, including one based on a toy I had as a kid: the Lava Planet Predator. (They also released a few based on other figures in the Kenner line, but who cares, this guy was badass) I was searching on Ebay recently to see if I could snag a deal on the Neca figure, when it occurred to me: duh, why not see if you can get a replacement for the original, long-lost fig you had? Several days later, this handsome chap shows up on my doorstep He came complete with the mask (which I think is somewhere behind my monitor since he keeps falling off the top of my PC) but not the missile for the shoulder cannon. Which is fine, since the launcher looks better without a big chunk of grey plastic sticking out of it. Still haven't found a cheap Neca Pred, but I live in hope.

They didn't get to castle grayskull, probably because it was it was so goddamn expensive, so it ended up turning into the Autobot Base, and I used a lot of pieces of other toy bases placed carefully as the deception base, including the MASK Boulder Hill and some GI Joe vehicles. About a month after the toy burning, my dad took me to the kaybee toy liquidators before mom got home from work, and spent like $150 on all the transformers I wanted that they had in stock, apologizing for tagging along with the crowd, telling me not to tell mom, and then a few days later, mom took me to Walmart after dad went to work and spent almost as much on transformers, telling me the same thing. They still took us to the same church, because it was next to my Grandmother's house, but that was the start of our drifting away from it. We stopped going to Sunday night and mostly stopped going to Wednesday night services.

The red light on the chest piece would bounce back and forth like a metronome, and the chest target detached from the harness so you could use it for target practice. i still think that starlyte pistol is the coolest toy gun of all time (well, next to the toy version of Han Solo's blaster from Return of the Jedi). And if you had the Starlyte rifle, you were a God amongst the other kids. And apparently there's been a sort of attempt to bring it back?

God drat the caps that came as a strip were bullshit, and it was so much better when they came in the rings. Though you could get more shots out of the strips. As for religious groups coming out against toys, this is probably the best thing to see just how that thinking works https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hnjdq32u-MU Basically, because it has "occult" overtone, meanings magic, monsters, and other stuff kids like and have fun with, therefor its about SATAN and a recruiting tool. The best part is the guy who looks more like an 80s porn star than a evangelical is using the Snake Mountain speaker and looks like he's having fun with it.

It sold out instantly and was pretty much impossible to get. No Blue Peter on TV here, but a classmate did have a go at making his own island from chicken wire and papier-maché. The wings could fold out like that? I had that toy but never knew you could do that. My favorite toys were Siku brand die cast cars and trucks. Especially the trucks. I liked these because the 1:55 scale was consistent between models Trucks would actually be bigger than cars. Lesser toy brands toy brands would often make trucks smaller and they'd be about as big as the cars. That said, Siku later started selling inconsistently scaled truck models too. It was a pricy brand though, and the mirrors on the trucks would invariably break off or get lost. Stick Insect has a new favorite as of 15:21 on Oct 16, 2015 |

This is the kind of toy you buy for a niece or nephew, and smile at the horror that dawns on their parent's faces when they realize what you've done. I had these as a kid, and they were a blast. I wanted to buy some for my niece when she was 4, but couldn't find any, so I gave her one of those buckets full of percussion instruments. It was full of stuff like tamborines and bells and little bongo drums. Her mother has yet to forgive me for urging her to explore her creative and musical inclinations.

poo poo yes, the classic laser tag gun. I was too young during the 80s when this was huge, but all the kids on my street had laser tag stuff, so I wanted in. I remember I finally managed to get a hand-me-down pistol like this, then had to beg my parents to buy one of the sensor doodads. They also had a sensor hat you could get that was the dorkiest looking thing ever. But the ultimate loving laser tag item was the giant rifle. This thing was massive, and had so many crazy features. Only one older kid on my street had this thing, but by god he was KING poo poo on that street while laser tag was a thing. Things I had though. Somehow I managed to get GI Joe's Nighwing plane for christmas one year. This is another of those toys that in your memory seems massive, but was probably only like 2 feet long. But it had so much cool poo poo like working landing gear. Then there was hot wheels wreck cars. I forget the proper name, but they all had a spring-loaded damage panel on the car that when you smacked them together flipped around and made it look like they got wrecked. Such a quintessential boys toy, I spent so much time mashing these things into each other. And one thing I remember owning, and I'd love to find out more information about it. It was a water gun around 1992 or so, not a super soaker. It was shaped like a sawed-off shotgun with wacky colors, and you racked the slide and it would fire a solid slug of water, not just a squirt. This thing was a loving beast, it literally hurt to get tagged by this thing. If anyone remembers what the hell this was, I'd love to know.

Meccano was/is a pretty popular toy in the UK and other Commonwealth countries (not sure about the US). It's kind of like Lego in that the basic way it works hasn't changed since it was invented so you can use stuff from the 50s or whenever with the stuff from today no problem.
