Yo this is a callback to a couple pages before, but where in this clinton education plan does it say room & board, or state colleges would be covered? Right at the top it says you get free tuition at community colleges and then lists a bunch of restrictions (like the 10 hour thing). Am I misreading it?

Their conduct is just the logical end result of a capitalist system. If you're not willing to crush an employees larynx with your thumbs with a demand they thank you, your shareholders will just gently caress off to reap the bloodied dividends of whatever feckless prats that are willing to believe they're great people while stomping on necks for profit. And nobody will actually care enough in the end to change anything.

I'm in a bit of a poo poo mood after reading that tbh

Right now the republicans are on a powerplay with the structural advantage in the house and a difficult to reverse advantage in the supreme court. They need to take advantage of those while they can, so they're Staying Together For the Kids. Provided that the democrats win in 2016, I have a feeling that there will be some recriminations in 2020/2022 when redistricting starts to take effect and the supreme court has turned left for 5 years or so. On the other hand, maybe the rump will just blow things up right now.

President Obama is halting the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

quote:

WASHINGTON — The United States will halt its military withdrawal from Afghanistan and instead keep thousands of troops in the country through the end of President Obama’s term in 2017, Mr. Obama will announce on Thursday, prolonging the American role in a war that has now stretched on for 14 years.

The current American force in Afghanistan of 9,800 troops will remain in place through most of 2016 under the Obama administration’s revised plans, before dropping to about 5,500 at the end of next year or in early 2017, senior administration officials said.

Some of the troops will continue to train and advise Afghan forces, while others will carry on the search for Qaeda fighters and militants from the Islamic State and other groups who have found a haven in Afghanistan, they said.

I know Obama was hesitant to make this decision, but events in Kundunz probably forced his hand. Nonetheless, it is probably more in the U.S.'s interests to maintain a force than the alternative. It won't be politically popular, though.

Aside from being way too long, and ignoring conservative pundits, does the American public really have a problem with Afghanistan going on? Like the moderates and people who ignore politics.

I'd say in general no, it's always been seen as the "good war" versus Iraq which was not justified at all.

If he had done this 2-3 years ago I think he'd be heavily criticized but as it stands with ISIS et all I don't think he can be blamed for wanting to keep the peace somewhere.

In other words he adopted some of Bernie's foreign policy plan! :v:

One of Obama's major campaign promises in 2008 was that he would end U.S. ground involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq. There have been repeated attempts to pull out, each of which were scuttled or reversed due to gains by militants, and I think there is fear within the Administration that turning back on withdrawal once again will make the President seem ineffectual. It further underscores the failures of his foreign policy at a time when the U.S. already looks weak.

It also gives conservatives room to gloat. I expect McCain to be saying, "I told you so" later today.

Here's the thing: those regulators (or at least their bosses) don't want to do something about them. The system is working as the higher ups intended.

I'm sure that any government employee who actually tried to fight the illegal provisions would find their job in jeopardy in a hurry. More likely though the law is written in a way that omits the ability to take any enforcement action, which is an intentional oversight by the architects of the bill to prevent a bureaucrat from messing up their giveaway to businesses.

Ladies and gentleman, an endpoint of immigration.

quote:

Hazleton, Pa., was just another struggling coal city until a wave of Latino immigrants came to town in 2006. It was a dark time: A wave of violent crime swept across the city. People were afraid to walk around downtown.

Hazleton was a difficult place to be Latino. But the job market was growing, thanks to industrial parks and meatpacking plants. The rent was affordable, and the schools were good. A community emerged and today, Hazleton is 40 percent Latino, among the highest in Pennsylvania.

The Latino community is good for Hazleton's bottom line. That's all some residents, like Yannuzzi, the mayor, need to know.

"I think it's good for the community; it helped Hazleton establish itself again and it added life back to the community," he says.

NPR has been following the Hazleton story since 2006, when the town tried to pass local ordinances to curb what it saw as an illegal immigration crisis. The operative word here is try, since the ACLU sued against their implementation, a District Court judge ruled them unconstitutional (Lozano v. Hazleton), and the SCOTUS refused to hear an appeal in 2014.

For humor's sake, I feel compelled to mention that mayor Yannuzzi was City Council president in 2006 and originally supported the ordinances.

RICHARD HANNA: And Kevin McCarthy basically blew himself up with that comment over the Benghazi committee. You know, sometimes the biggest sin you can commit in D.C. is to tell the truth. This may not be politically correct, but I think that there was a big part of this investigation that was designed to go after people and an individual, Hillary Clinton. And, I think there's also a lot of it that's important that we needed to get to the bottom of this. But this has been the longest investigation, longer than Watergate --

BILL KEELER (HOST): Well you've got a conservative Republican out there right now, who's military, who's really blowing the whistle on the whole thing. And he's basically saying, 'Yeah I was removed because it was political.'

HANNA: You know, I'm not on that committee and I can't speak to that. I certainly watched the hearings and read some of the transcript. You can't-- after what Kevin McCarthy said, it's difficult to accept that at least a part of it was not. And I think that's the way Washington works. But you'd like to expect more from a committee that spent millions of dollars and tons of time.

Benghazi is such a weird Emporer no clothes situation. Everyone except for the brain washed tea party base, including politicians on both sides and I would hope the media, understands it's a witch hunt with no basis whatsoever but no one can outright call it what it is and we have to act SHOCKED when McCarthy accidentally revealed the truth. It's like the open secret that the GOP courts the racist votes but saying that is impolite so we have to tip toe around it.

I'm not quite that cynical. I suspect it's more of an FDA situation - sure, they may get around to some of those cases someday, but they don't have the funding or manpower to do it in a timely fashion or cover even a remotely sensible fraction of reported violations. This is admittedly still working as designed - heck, as long as occasional prosecution happens, that's a great way to argue that the system works just fine and is adequately funded!
