Before playing this, I would have been wary of letting another team take over, but now I dunno.... How much input does Kojima have? I know he's the final word and everything but does he focus on directing cutscenes and writing plot or does he also help design the gameplay? Cause honestly if it's just plot poo poo then I'd be fine with someone else at the helm. Apart from a few moments, I don't really feel much Kojima influence in Phantom Pain. Conversely, Ground Zeroes did feel comfortably Kojima to me. I dunno, I know I'm not being very specific here but I'm sure someone else knows what I mean
According to some prerelease media, TPP is a lot of gameplay design he has wanted to do since he began brainstorming for MG1 and just recently he recognized the state of the art has reached a point to be able to do it to his satisfaction. He seemed to think of it as a very high level transformation of the series, hence the change of the tag line to Tactical Espionage Operations.

So there's some easy stuff to ascribe to him, like all of the detail oriented game systems stacked on each other like camo, sound, and enemy preparedness. We get the full glory of a cardboard box fast travel system he has wanted to implement for nearly 30 years. We have an inordinate amount of gun porn contrasted with themes that ultimately look to pacifism.

There's also some of the higher level experimental stuff we can expect came from him. Stuff like the focus on the player responsible for his own fundamental intelligence gathering. Its up to the player to sieve through a lot of really small but interesting details through eavesdropping on guards or CQC interrogations, basically a more important full blooming of systems he was interested in for the past 30 years and implemented in half measures like cardboard box fast travel. Incidentally the biggest complaint is how the story ended up in the tapes, however there is a staggering amount of missable guard conversations or VIP interrogations that lay down huge amounts of foreshadowing of the games story, even outside of scripted sequences like Lingua Franca and Traitor's Caravan.

oh yeah, I totally got that. it just would have been so much more satisfying to have something other than that tiny callback. Eli gets a fair amount of exposure but it would have been cool to see David. To be fair this is also the most that the series has ever referred to the two by their real names, especially in those multiple scrolling timelines.

Replay the game, after developing all the weapons, with only lethal and no fultons. So then you have to extract those prisoners and hear what they are saying as you carry them to safety.

As I near the end of the game, I get exactly what Kojima meant when he said that this is Metal Gear Solid V, not Metal Gear Solid 5. Because it isn't Metal Gear Solid 5.

The game is enjoyable in its own right and is a great stealth sandbox game but a lot of stuff just feels... missing. The crazy boss fights, weird codec conversations, a lot of Metal Gear hallmarks feel like they're either missing or exist in a diminished, toned down state. The game still has a lot of goofy stuff, but much of that comes from emergent gameplay and the game itself feels a lot darker and grittier than usual.

Prisoners are the easy part. Anybody a mission wants you to eliminate usually has unique interrogation dialog, ranging from being super excited you are Big Boss, to some fairly major foreshadowing. Depending where you are at in the story (I think replaying missions will reset the triggers, but you can pick this stuff up in free roam when you are at the right point of progression first time through) you can pick up fairly minor bits like Quiet being near the power plant, or fairly major plot twists like guards gossiping about the parasite infection spreading to Masa village after the events at the oil refinery making it ripe for Eli to take over. Or gossiping about Skull Face's nuclear segway plan, a really entertaining conversation between a couple guards about how the cheap Walker Gears are a sales scam made to pressure higher ups into buying into Skull Face's nuclear sales ecosystem. You can even run into some completely unmarked normal mooks with interrogations, usually minor but unique, like Malak's sympathetic guard or the assassin in 32.

No let's not bring Sillicon Knights back, they were good when they were second party Nintendo, but SK burned their bridges really hard because they were dissatisfied with the Wii and became a super lovely company without Nintendo keeping watch.

The people raiding apartments in Manhattan and so on are wonderfully crazy but I’m glad people are getting enjoyment out of Kojima and Konami’s hints and red herrings. I dunno why they’re expecting to “unlock” something when if we get more content it’ll just be announced at some point as DLC, but I’m glad they’re having fun :)

Speaking of lunacy I've been watching cutscenes over and over and here's my theory, the best theory. I don't want to have to back any of this up I just want to be able to say I called it after radiant kojima descends from the sky so he will take me back with him:
  • Skull Face isn't real he's just a villain Ocelot made up because look at him, this is the poo poo Ocelot thinks is cool. You believe it because he's controlling your perception via a mix of hypnosis, the lieDroid, fake tapes, synthesised voices on the radio and maybe even what you see via that giant antenna attached to your optic nerve that nobody ever talks about. I have no loving clue who you're really fighting for the whole game though.
  • Ground Zeroes is VR, and the "Skull Face" in GZ is actually Kaz who sold out mother base for some reason, like Emmerich says.
  • It's not 1984 obviously because there's wormholes and weather machines. Ocelot is trying to make a new BB by assembling a brainwashed persona called V. 2+2=V is a tally of Bosses. V is not 5 because you're a horrible frankenstein monster which is why they don't let you inside. Morale goes up because troops get hazard pay for interacting with you.
  • You're actually Kaz, and some bullfuckery is going on to make you think your left arm is missing instead of your right (there's subtle evidence in the intro animations, and this ties into the backwards text visible in some locations but I'm not totally sure how). Your hosed up eyes are why lights sources have so much glare, and learning colours in Japanese pre-1950 is why you perceive some shades of green as blue, like the exit signs in the intro and nearly every time you see a chopper. Cutscene-Kaz is a phantom; it's really you doing the talking fight club style.
  • Ishmael is Quiet who was deep cover as a nurse and tried to bust you out, almost loving up the V plan. This is why he moves like a woman (and has a butt-zoom) and sounds like he's wearing heels in the parking lot. She was already a vampire which is why Ishy doesn't seem to care that much about being killed 3 or 4 times in the prologue. Someone else (maybe an actual assassin, who seems to be male in the intro?) fell out the window after she kamehameha'd them with flower powers or something.
  • The Truth is an attempt to patch over her interference, and simultaneously completes your brainwashing by recycling the From The Man Who Sold The World tape that BB sent to the real medic snake in 1984.
  • Ocelot to Otacon: "if he figures out you're not your dad I'll shoot you in the balls"
  • Eli is just some fag probably.

Incidentally on a replay I overheard a conversation about DD where one of the Mother Base soldiers gets really defensive over another one suggesting DD is a wolf and not a dog. It's well before the Huey sequence and is essentially foreshadowing for it.

EDIT: Come to think of it that's probably why Ocelot of all people is the one who trains DD. He trains a wolf to be a dog as he trains Venom to be Big Boss, each of them really something he's not. Makes a lot more sense of why Huey's scene leads directly into Truth.

Perhaps, but you can teach someone administrative duties and logistics. Snake's genetics made him the perfect soldier, and that can't be taught (I guess?) so that's why he's hot bait for cloning.

To be fair Miller makes a lot of assumptions in the game that end up being wrong or only half right (Quiet being a Skull, Cipher being the bad guy, Skullface wanting to destroy everything but English). Sally's nuclear self-destuct makes no sense, isn't implied by anything, doesn't add anything to Skullface's plan, but there's a whole tape of Miller going "yeah I'm pretty sure this thing can use magic bacteria with particle accelerators floating in their cytoplasm to transmute depleted uranium into u235." It's easy to handwave that stuff as a videogame but I prefer to think Miller is a little dumb sometimes.

Most of the assumptions Miller makes are wrong but at the time he makes them I don't see why he wouldn't think them. Quiet exhibits a bunch of powers similar to the Skulls, it makes sense to assume she is one (and the Sniper Skulls basically work just like her, so...). They didn't know Skull Face had taken over Cipher until later, and Ocelot was actually the one who told them Skull Face was responsible for MSF's destruction. And "he wants to wipe out every language except English" was supported by the evidence that they were training parasites to react to every language yet not one was being trained in English.

The game basically casts Miller as the impulsive guy who is wrong every time but in most cases he's just being sensible. It is kind of a dumb idea to let Quiet live, and if Venom hadn't gotten super lucky that she decided against speaking she would've killed them all with the English strain. It was reasonable to assume those other things as well, especially since wiping out all but one language makes perfect sense if you assume Zero is still in control of Cipher, and it's Ocelot who has the info about Zero's state. Ocelot ends up right all the time because he's withholding information, because he's Ocelot.
