That Maiden of Hell looks like a reference to Hatsune Miku? The head and hair design, along with being a singer and the color palette is reminiscent of her character.

The 1st Slaughter Daughter (without Oron's help) is who I was referring to when I said that there was an unbeatable enemy in Ragnarok. The only way to fight her is with the Bent Sword, and her initial attack always kills you. Even with the best possible equipment in the game, and hitting the level cap, she has too much defense and deals too much damage for you to be able to take her down. Everyone else in the game? You can take them down if you grind enough.

It runs a bit deeper than that: The track you hear during that mission was composed by Otomania, who I think is one of the most well known vocaloid artists? Im not sure. Still though he does stuff for project DIVA and the like.

Yuri Yaksha is probably a reference to a kind of nature spirit called the Yaksha, who is associated with "natural treasures hidden in the earth" and is sometimes portrayed within lotus blossoms.

...to anyone trying to put together this fractured converation, the crystal spirit with the two ladies is called 'Yuri Yaksha', which basically means 'Lesbian Nature/Earth Spirit'. It's not exactly scandalous or anything, even if it might be an uncomfortable reminder to some that the DLC exists.

When the game first came out, there was a glitch that caused the 2nd Time Stone to not work at all. Thankfully that was one of the first bugs fixed. Oh hey, it's the Balmung. One of the most powerful weapons in HMH1 that you got through a really long and grueling stage (that was also a reference to another game), or through one of the extra stages added in the port. Now reduced to a casino prize.

It's a classic prank to just to label some slaughter daughters 1 and 3, then set them loose into the world. Heroes will just be spending all that time looking for that second slaughter daughter!

I have a theory that slaughter daughter was the original translation for the Venus Seven and was meant to be a ranking of how deadly they were. In which case this is another problem with the translation going wierd in a few places.

It's not that (like the God Nine, the Venus Seven are literally called the English words 'Venus Seven' in Japanese), but oddly the two are called First (that is, eldest; first-born) Slaughter Daughter, and something like Third Massacre Daughter - that is, the two are effectively synonyms, but not identical. Maybe it's some kind of wordplay but I don't know what if so.

Yeah, that DLC was a lot better than Revolution's. Dunno what they were thinking with that. These quests are a lot more interesting gameplay wise as well. If the Time Goddess is still with you, the first quest has different dialogue. The store at the end is actually where you can buy weapons that were normally one time rewards, if you used them up in weapon crafting. The Revolution DLC also has a store like that. I think you can buy Yuja's War God Staff there once you've used it up in weapon crafting.

I wonder if that world map has the thing from certain old RPGs where, if you go off the north edge you appear at the south. It's a common "mistake", and it would be a nice little thing to parody.

Is there some DLC that happens after the world is saved and the main game is over? I just thought it would be funny if some descendant of the hero line lived in a safe world and had to do a bunch of chores at his family home, 30 seconds each. And a Time Goddess (or #30) desperate for money would rewind time for such a lame thing. And uh... How the hero would get the money.. Maybe the house has a mess of vermin of all kinds, and sorting that out is the ultimate goal of the DLC.

Historical reference note: Noblong is pretty obviously Nobunaga, one of the most demonized rulers of Japan, who was best known for uniting all of Japan under, well, himself. Hideo is almost certainly a reference to Hideyoshi, Nobunaga's best-known general and successor. Tokuga is therefore a reference to Tokugawa, who succeeded Hideyoshi and started the Tokugawa dynasty. The Black Ships are a reference from about 200-300 years after Nobunaga's reign - they represent the U.S. Navy from when we wanted to open trade with Japan by force. But they're also alluding to Tokugawa's naval force of the first tekkousen - ironclad ships in an era where everyone else's navy was made of wood. Also: The DLC missions overuse the "panic" music at the beginning of the level. Just so many words over such a repetitive music sting.

Cannons were an unstoppable force in those days back when Japan was still busy with treating naval battles exactly like land battles. European trade ships were more heavily armed than whatever Japan could field and people had the bright idea with buying guns from merchants and training the peasants to use them in battle.

The goddess statue you have to 2000 gold to remove all statues is actually the same as the very first one you pay 200 to in order to proceed. And yeah, the title in that final mission can still be gotten if you just unequip those boots. Equipment during quests shows up whether it's in your inventory or not, the game only checks whether you have it currently equipped or not.

More historical reference notes: Nobunaga didn't actually unite Japan. He was well on his way, and would have most likely have achieved it, but he was killed by one of his generals before he actually finished the job. Hideyoshi finished the job, attempted to invade Korea twice, died, and then Tokugawa, another Nobunaga general, killed Hideyoshi's son, and took over. The Black Ships may have referred to the American vessels, but the term was based on the original Portuguese ships that opened trade with Japan because they painted their ships with black pitch. Eventually the term black ship came to apply to all western ships that came to Japan. Tokugawa, Hideyoshi, and Nobunaga all used those ironclad ships, but they were all pretty poo poo, as Japanese naval tactics were to pull up and grapple their opponents ships and go to hand-to-hand combat. During the aforementioned Korean invasion, the Korean ships were better constructed, and just fielded more, and heavier cannons to plink away at the armored ships from out of the tekkousen's range.

Scalding Coffee posted:Do arena battles have scaling enemies or is it really that generous for low level people? You can go through almost the entire game without stopping to kill some guys outside the regular part of the game. Even in the global dungeons, you can run away from a large portion of the encounters to get past them if you just want to collect items at a low level. As a general rule, if you start a mission and any of the monsters are already blue, it's safe to say you're beyond the expected level for that point.
