I live in South Dakota and wouldn't want a house boat at all. Half the year in Minnesota you will be fighting the cold and a third of it trying to keep the place warm enough so you don't freeze to death. Move somewhere that isn't a frozen tundra if you're serious about a houseboat.

As the not so proud owner of a sailboat (peak BWM) and sort of proud owner of a marine officer's license (pretty GWM), LOL at the idea of living in a houseboat in Minnesota year round. You won't die, but you will rue every day that you don't. Also you'll be broke. gently caress boats in the winter - and when I say this I mean boats with actual running water, steam plants, icebreaker escort and four full time engineers. So an aluminum houseboat...

I briefly contemplated sailboat living through the week (Marina's very close to work), but in the end, it really didn't seem like a great idea. I did manage to find a sail club that teaches, and allows you to take sail boats out for ~300 a year. To me, that's a pretty sweet deal.

Yeah, I remember those. If you're used to roughing it and are doing this as an exercise in extreme saving, that's not a terrible plan (although it may still be more work and expenses than you think.) I was arguing more from the standpoint of some random schlub who's already got an average amount of lifestyle expenses, including a lot of amenities that could be cut to save money much more easily and safely than they could living on a boat (since that also means giving up a lot of amenities.)

A boat, used for living, is just an RV that floats. Why not buy a Winnebago and live happily thereafter? It's much better insulated, cheaper to buy/maintain, and you can sleep overnight in your work parking lot. Or are you just trying to appear eccentric, when picking up chicks at the bar?

Yea, that is the better of a bad idea. There are people that live in RV's year round where I live in Montana, and its loving dumb. Going by most house boats I've seen, they probably aren't well insulated, so you'll either be spending a ton on heat from a space heater, or dealing with being cold all the time. At least in a RV you can add extra insulation or build a wind break next to it. But you know what, go for it houseboat guy. You'll probably have a wacky story that no one outside of the weirdo houseboat people will care about. Shine on you crazy soon to be frozen diamond.

Victoria is in the PNW so it gets below freezing a few nights a year. Minnesota is basically where Santa lives. Running an electric space heater all day, besides being insanely expensive, is definitely going to cause a fire at some point, right? A friend of mine is a good sailor, used to help other folks at the marina with repairs for cash on the side, lived a pretty frugal life but maintained his boat carefully. He lived in Toronto, so at one point he lived on the boat to save on rent and be near downtown. He would laugh in your face if you suggested he stay there over the winter, because that's how you destroy your boat and probably die. How on earth are you going to insulate your steel boat well enough to ward off the massive heat sink that is a lake full of near-freezing water?

I live in Denmark, and actually have a classmate who lives on a boat. Not a houseboat, a boat, a regular loving boat, docked at some marina. He does claim it's very cheap and easy to manage, when he's not avoiding breaking his legs when the drat thing freezes over in the winter. But all that, matters not a thing, he smells. And I mean he REALLY loving smells, like a rotten old broken sailor just walked into the room, the sweet smell of partly rotting clothes, that never get a chance to dry, because he LIVES ON A loving BOAT! If you're gonna live in some houseboat, you pretty much have to buy a decent one, or you're gonna be smelling of the dieing oceans and dead seaguls for the duration of your stay. On the other hand, I will always be able to use the following sentence to describe him: "He's a Belgian ex-con drugs and import craft beer dealer who lives on a boat." So that's always something.

I just heard something amazing at work, today. For the non-Canadians in this thread- we just elected a new Prime Minister. This is relevant. One of my coworkers, who is just barely scraping by with his mortgage payments, said: "We're probably going to buy a new CRV. Those tax cuts Trudeau's going to make should free up about $6000, for us." My co-worker lives in downtown Toronto, and doesn't need to have a car at all because of his location. So, not only is he financing a new SUV that will spend most of its time sitting in their driveway, but he's doing it based on a newly-elected politicians' political platform using some back-of-the-napkin calculations that are based on hopes and dreams. Good loving grief.

I just bought $450 worth of crap for a pirate costume. Probably the worst with money thing I've ever done, next to driving into a mailbox. Ended up sending back the pirate boots for some cheap-rear end boot covers.
