If you mod the wii virtual mode it will play GameCube isos.

The backwards compatibility part literally loads as if it were a physical wii so all mods and hacks work. It won't read a GameCube disc but will play ripped ones. I haven't done it, just read about it.

Backwards compatibility is the way of the past, now it's way more profitable to have people re-buy their library every console generation only with a few extra bells and whistles tacked on to justify it.

I loving hate that they're not doing backwards compatibility anymore because my PS2 is dying and some of my favorite games are PS2 games. I would kill for them to release an HD compatible PS2 or something.

Fortunately PS2 Emulation is really good now and you can run most disc based games from their disc with little or no problems. It's not 100% good, a lot of games still are incompatible but most of the big titles for PS2 are good.

Unfortunately one of the games I want to play most doesn't work at all, for some reason Steambot chronicles just doesn't emulate.

At the very least, I know the reason why the PS3 ditched backwards-compatibility in later models, and it's a reason that probably holds for other consoles as well: to be able to successfully make early PS3s backwards-compatible with PS2s they needed a chunk of special hardware that wouldn't even be useful for other PS3 features. The PS1 compatibility stayed because that amounted to a single chip, but I'd assume that got ditched in the PS4 because it just wasn't seen as a viable thing to keep pursuing.

The PS2 generation's in a weird spot for that right now. Everything before that is pretty easy to emulate on current console hardware, and everything after that is mostly using the same gear as now, but that generation doesn't fit the latter and hasn't quite landed with the former yet.

Also, the PSP, which used mini-CDs, highlighted another problem with CDs - the drive gets unpleasantly warm, which is only rarely a problem in consoles but causes real trouble with handhelds.

I can't say I've ever had that problem, and I've played the poo poo out of two first gen PSPs. The drive would be slightly warm after playing for a couple hours, but not alarmingly so.

I like the umd drive noise because it reminds me of the dreamcast.

It does drive me nuts that the Ps4 does not have access to the Ps and Ps2 catalogs. Sometimes i want to boot up Tactics for an hour and hit chocobos with rocks, but I gotta keep my ps3 around for that. Also for some reason US netflix only works on the ps3 and not the ps4.

Oh, also region locking. Apparently the PS4 is region locked again or something? I imported a few games on my PS3 and my DS. Both the 3DS and PS4(apparently, I don't have one yet) are locked and it severely dampens my interest in them because there are a lot of cool games that don't always get localized. It's not just that either, but in other regions of the world games still get banned or censored for being too bloody or hitlery. It's disappointing that after a period of a lot of freedom and fun with games, they're starting to just go backwards.

I believe there's still region-locking tech in the PS4, but it's up to the publisher if it is, and next to nobody turns it on. That's how it was on the PS3 at least, and it only happened once, with Persona 4 Arena (but not Arena Ultimax).

I bought a used PS3 from Gamestop a year ago. It's a CECHA01 model from 2006 - so it's hardware compatible with PS2 and PS1 games. They actually had two of this same model, so I bought both and flipped the other the same day for double the money - so I essentially got a free PS3 out of nowhere. HDMI connection to the tv. The downside is that it can't read my memory cards so I have to start over in the games (not a big deal to me)

What a great discussion about giant supply chains and economic choices that upset nerds. That's not a marketing failure, that's a vocal minority. If it made fiscal sense to maintain backwards compatibility, you bet your loving rear end you would have it. Sony don't leave money on the table if it's of any kind of scale the way you guys are imagining it. Can we talk about marketing again?

Look at this loving awful thing. The irony almost rolled my eyes right out of their sockets.

There are memory card adapters that let the PS3 read PS1 and PS2 memory cards.

One of my favorite anecdotes from that book was about a light gun arcade game Nintendo was debuting in Japan, where right before the unveiling they discovered that the sensors on the clay discs stopped working, meaning that they couldn't detect the signal from the guns. Nintendo couldn't afford to shut down the debut so they had someone behind the scenes manually entering in real time the registered hits and calculating the scores of the players, all hidden without nobody knowing. It was a hit, and Nintendo sold more of these at different locations, all based on a game that didn't even work at it's premiere.

That happened with the first iPhone too. It was a buggy mess at its announcement and Steve Jobs had to follow a very precise series of steps to avoid revealing how beta the OS was.

And if that wasn't enough pressure he then decided the plastic screen would be much better as glass.

I wonder how many product announcements are barely functioning devices.

Videogame demos at trade shows are notorious for stuff like that. They'll have stuff where someone is showing off a "playable demo" of a game, leaving out the fact that everything is tightly scripted that way and nothing about it actually works.

There's a wacky comedy plot about competing marketing teams somewhere in that. Like one team tries to steal ideas from the other, so they leak fake ideas like the diaper ad, but it's widely successful, so they need to turn the tables quick etc etc.

PC games have the same problem-stuff that ran on DOS you can mostly just run through DosBox, and games newer than about 2005 or so will mostly run just fine, but games for Windows 95 and 98 are a real pain to get running.
