When it was announced in March that Kristin Shott, a 36-year-old welder at the Naval Air Depot on North Island, had won an award for blowing the whistle on a long history of faulty welds made by unqualified tradesmen working on the pride of America's carrier fleet, the USS Abraham Lincoln -- along with the Stennis, the Constellation, and the Nimitz -- the Navy quickly launched a campaign of damage control.

"The whistleblower is part of the system, and we're pleased that it worked," North Island's Captain Peter Laszcz told one of the several TV news reporters to show up at the base as a result of a news release touting Shott's award from the Washington-based U.S. Office of Independent Counsel. "Once we became aware of that,we took immediate steps to stop all work, inspect the work we had done, and fix the work once we found out it wasn't up to standards."

+/- 4.9 percentage margin of error? Only 400 people polled? Not fake, but not really meaningful either. Polls of this size are done to drive media narratives. No one spends money on real polls (5,000+ people, >2.5% error) until there's actually something at stake.

https://twitter.com/Mediaite/status/654792470585196546

I feel like I've had to say this a lot on this forum recently but 400 is a decent sample size and 1,000-1,500 is the usual upper end for polling companies. Representativeness does not scale linearly with sample size (see below), and mathematically 1,500 is about what you need for 2.5%. Go out and see how many surveys you can find with a sample size of over 5,000, I doubt it's very many.

Just..someone
http://www.washingtonian.com/projects/JFK-AF1/layout1.html#story

quote:

...Kennedy’s assistant press secretary, “Mac” Kilduff, hurried into the cabin, spotting Stoughton with a look of relief. “Thank God you’re here,” Kilduff said. “The President’s going to take his oath. You’re going to have to make the pictures and release it to the press.”

Kilduff was barely holding it together. JFK aide Kenneth O’Donnell had told Kilduff earlier that fall that he should start looking for a new job—the White House didn’t want him around anymore. The swing through Texas had been meant as Kilduff’s final presidential trip before leaving—and now he found himself the ranking press aide on the trip, ushering in a new administration, while O’Donnell, his antagonist, mourned the fallen idol...

At one point, well after Air Force One’s departure from Dallas, the Air Force in Washington called the presidential plane as it sorted out whom to expect in Washington.

“Air Force One—this is the Air Force Command Post,” the radio squawked. “If possible, request the names of the passengers onboard, please.”

“We have 40-plus,” the plane responded.

“Forty people! Is that affirmative?”

“Affirmative.”

“Can you tell me in regard to number one and number two—the top people?”

“Roger,” Air Force One explained. “The President is onboard. The body is onboard, and Mrs. Kennedy is onboard.”

Never before or since has Air Force One carried two Presidents at once—one dead, one alive. Never before or since has a Vice President witnessed the murder of his President. Never before or since in the nuclear age has an assassination forced the government into a panicked transition from one chief executive to another. And never before or since have the aides of the fallen President and the incoming President been locked together for hours in an aluminum tube, with one another and their own thoughts.

In fact, we may never know precisely how many people were aboard Air Force One as it took off for Washington—a sore point for conspiracy theorists in the decades since. A steward’s handwritten flight manifest, which now lies in the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin, was obviously done hastily while the plane was still on the ground in Dallas—it lists “Capt Stoughton” as a passenger. The 41 people aboard are listed in an orderly manner, line by line, grouped by rank and organization—and then handwritten in the left margin are the names of the two journalists brought who made the flight: M. Smith and C. Roberts.

Scrawled at the bottom of the page by a hand obviously unsure where to place such a tragic piece of information are words that make a reader pause: “Also body of Pres. K—.”

It's honestly slightly scary to read how disorganized the Presidential team was after JFK was shot.

Not entirely true for Iowa. Felons can have their voting rights restored via petition to the Governor's office. However, "Of the 14,350 felons who have completed sentences since 2011, only a few have applied" according to the Des Moines Register.

Pictured, Iowan Kelli Jo Griffin who was tried for voting in a mayoral election. Griffin was convicted of delivering less than 100 grams of cocaine and received 5 years of probation in 2008. When her probation was up, she voted in a 2013 election. She was told by her lawyer that her voting rights would be restored when she was no longer under state supervision. Unfortunately, Gov. Branstad changed that policy to felons appealing to him directly instead of automatically being re-enfranchised. Thankfully, a jury acquitted Griffin of perjury related to the voting "fraud," but she was still on the hook for $10,000 in legal fees.

The F-35 still has like 40 years of projected service life to work out the kinks. Right now the biggest thing holding it back is software. The Block 4A and 4B updates, due out in 2021 and 2023 respectively, should make it a more capable asset.

This goofy looking thing is what we could've ended up with if the military hadn't decided to go with the Lightning II.
