I was going to suggest USPOL November: The Boehner Maintainer as a title, but now that won't be needed. Don't worry, the insanity will continue because Ryan will be even more aggressive than Boehner in using the debt ceiling/budget to hold the government hostage. He's also a firm believer that a default wouldn't be that bad. Ganon posted:Would there be any gridlock if Jeb won? Get rid of the filibuster on day 1 and it's 4 years of doing whatever. Don't even have to worry about losing any senate seats in 2018 with that map. It would only be 2 years because that action, laws that would get passed, supreme court replacements, and etc would create a Democratic wave that would take back the house and senate in 2018.

Also since the Treasurer just pays things as they come in I think it's possible the first payments they default on my not be huge "Destroy the World" payments or whatever. After a week though or longer , yeah there'd be some fall out.

In the long term there will be significant incentive to reduce the influence of US currency and monetary policy which will weaken a dominant US hegemon. Some of that may not be horrible in the long term, but it forces the US out of a position where it is in the driver seat so to speak

Even a short default lasting less than than a few days would directly cost hundreds of billions of dollars in the long term. Direct damage from being in default more than a few days would be catastrophic. When you take into account the external effects from a default, like Boon says, it gets a bit out of control and things get unpredictable. Especially if it lasts more than a few days. However, the stock market isn't predicting a default or anything damaging happening so I'd take some comfort in that.

It's incredible that US politicians can even engage in brinkmanship on debt payments without any real repercussion. Most nations would be invaded by angry bond holders if their government even hinted at purposefully defaulting, much less the effect on bond yields. The US has an amazing advantage with respect to the world in terms of cost of debt, it really shouldn't be wasted.
