He is banking on more people paying attention after the new year and that will somehow launch his campaign. Or that Carson and Trump will flame out because of the, you know, insanity. However, JEB! still needs to articulate some sort of reason he is running.

It remains to be seen if the conservatives are willing to just expand the definition of white to combat this.

Actually it's been determined.

They already did that.

Like the way that certain minorities became "white" is basically by having all immigration from those countries stop, and then the 2nd+ generation ones (for lack of a better term) "act white". That's not going to happen as long as you have a 120 million strong developing nation directly to your south.

The demographics of this poll are pretty stark. 38% over 65, 68% over 50, 87% white. Then there are the complete lies: 39% haven't decided yet whether they're going to vote R no matter who the candidates are, 28% consider themselves moderate as opposed to slightly or very conservative.

Bad examples, both phenomena were recent developments 100 years ago, largely as a result of the racist policies and public stances of Woodrow Wilson. He summarily turned around the long standing and before then undisputed policy of racial integration in the Federal civil service, and his openly racist attitudes helped to normalize and speed along the revitalization of what had been an almost completely defunct KKK.

History does not run in a straight line towards progressivism and it is dangerous to see it that way.

I often think that the "arc of history is long but bends towards justice" has not resulted in hope, but complacency. But I'm a cynic.

I dont like rubio, but he is honestly the closet republican that could win moderates. if jeb were smart, he would attack trump, carson and cruz as being insane radicals.

How's that working out for Kaisch? "Rubio appeals to moderates" is exactly why he has to destroy him, Bush's only hope here is that there is a silent majority in the GOP of moderates that will vote in the primary based off that, and holding on to the backing from the donors until then. If Rubio gets a head of steam going it is a huge battle.

You know as well as I do that they said the same thing in the 1870s, complaining about asiatic huns and dirty irishmen. Howling about those "mudmen" serving as the backbone of the union army and "defiling the flower of the south" was a staple of Daughters of Confederate Veterans newsletters. Then the social construct shifted and lo and behold we were anointed as good upstanding white people. Happened with italians too. "White" is a social construct of in group vs out group and so it shifts with who is in the ingroup.

FilthIncarnate posted:

Would you go into this a little deeper, if you don't mind?

I knew that Charles C. Johnson and his right-wing California conservative friends are all Straussian, but I didn't know it was a mainstream Republican thing.

I'm pretty much good for nothing but glib comments and smartass remarks until Wednesday. But as a brief interlude, Straussianism is a distinct framework for evaluating things of a political nature and his overall methodology, whereas I'd be going to with a specific section of his writings, namely his take on the Nobel Lie, found in his discussion of Plato's Republic in The City and Man and tying it in with his comments on the rise of national socialism and support of fascism. Basically he thought it was good and cool that elites create a national myth to justify their rule and coerce the people into doing their bidding, with truth, law, and ethical behavior being laughable ideas with no place in the role of a stable and cohesive society. Reagan has been used heavily by the adherents to this view during and particularly post presidency, turning a mediocre man with a brain turned to oatmeal by disease who left office under scandal into a totem that justifies all their behavior and was loved and supported by all. This lets him be used to refute any and all things they don't like and beat back against actual beloved figures. It was used while in office ("my heart tells me it is true but the facts tell me it is not", and most of the rhetoric of his speeches, his little spins on the presidency and a ton of symbolic stuff for the military, pushing it to the current insane hero worship) and all the time since (remember how actual reagan couldn't get by in today's GOP, but you had Eric Cantor on 60 minutes straight up insisting Reagan never raised taxes and opposed immigration reform?) The power of symbols is very undervalued, particularly in how it merges with modern marketing.

If you are interested in more, check out Jeet Heer, editor of The New Republic, it was his comments on this that got me reading about it and noticing the pattern. Actually people should be following him on twitter anyways, with TNC touring and Jamelle Bouie doing wedding planning, he is the best source of comic book talk & politicial mockery on the twitters.

here are some highlights of books covering Strauss and fascism if you want some cliff notes on that part
