They do seem genuinely surprised at how fast things moved, and didn't really have much of an idea about the stretch goals and unlocks. This is the first wargaming KS I've seen without a huge map all planned out to £500k or whatever.

I cannot imagine the spreadsheet that they've ended up with. I guess one way to do low-cost rewards is the extra sprues thing they've already done.

I think Hawk decided to do something that wasn't entirely self centered and it might be causing them problems now. Before launching, and on the kickstarters front page, they pledged to support their retailers by not putting the whole range up for grabs.

They are holding units back for retailers to sell, so can't just throw them up as stretch goals like you would see usually. As the money pours in they have fewer places to go with the unlocks and add ons.

I like that Hawk want to support retail and build their presence for the long term, but they will need to walk a line here. I wonder if people would get pissy if Hawk were to announce that the kickstarter is funding more plastic units which you will not be able to buy in the kickstarter...

The worst customers get pissy whatever you do, its much more important to keep your retailers happy IMO, but at the same time I'm not so sure it was really necessary here.

Ah I'd forgotten about that, yes that may end up really limiting their options. They could double down on just covering their original goals, nothing about KS says you must have stretch goals and free poo poo - it's just become expected. :v:

Did they ever say how much of the range they'd keep back from KS? It'd be good to have all of the starter fleets in plastic as options with a limited ship for each maybe. Leave absolutely everything else to retailers. I'm not in marketing, probably for good reason.

LazyAngel

I'm not convinced it's going to be so hard to identify the cruisers. There's a fairly clear visual language, particularly with the UCM.

For the UCM, it's;

1) Does it lack turrets on the 'wing' sections - then it's a Light Cruiser.
a) Big gun underneath? New Cairo class, with (I assume) a burn-through laser.
b) Turrets underneath? Osaka class
2) Does it have hangers on the 'wings'? Fleet Carrier
3) Guns on the upper prow? Heavy Cruiser
a) Is the gun a massive laser? St Petersburg, otherwise Moscow

It's only the regular cruisers that need you to look at the lower prow, and that's just turrets = Rio, ?Orbital Artillary? = Madrid, big gun = Berlin and the troopship is kind of obvious. I'm not sure even knowing the class is that important; the visual difference between turrets and lasers is probably all you need to guess at its purpose, and it's easy to see Light/Regular/Heavy cruiser or carrier from the top.

Scourge is a bit trickier to be fair, but appears to boil down to the 'crest' on top of the prow being used on Heavy Cruisers, and Light Cruisers lacking the extra 'wing' sections, and once again, Carriers having their own special wings. Then specialisation is given by the components under the prow, although with Scourge they're a bit more ambiguous, but seem to be broken down by;

1) Loads of ?missile? tubes - Strix or Wyvern
3) Hammerhead with loads of what looks like gunports - Yokai/Sphinx/Shenlong
4) Some kind of spinal mount - Ifrit/Raiju

Not sure about the Scourge frigates, though Harpy seems to have the gunports, Djinn the missile tubes, the Charybdis looks like it's the orbital bombardment ship and god knows that the Scylla does.

I think the KS is meant to be 2 player box and four starter fleets in plastic then a few kickstarter exclusive ship variants and maybe some space scenery. Everything else comes later at retail.

I'm wondering if things continue to go really well they might consider going plastic with a few capital ships but it seems unlikely.

What I am getting a bit edgy about is that it is gone 2pm here in the UK and still no update posted for beyond £150k. The total stands at £176k... Come on Hawk, strike while the iron is hot! Even something fluffy is better than silence.

Given the current day 1 funding and how kickstarters generally trend, i imagine we will hit a lot of those streach goals... but I very much doubt we will hit the frigate bonanza goal of 500,000 pounds... However awesome that would be. If we actually reach that I would probably spring for another starter army... so that i could have the 2 captian 2 player starters... 2 PHR starters... and 1 shaltari starter. Since at that point we would be getting 8 frigates, a cruiser, and a battle cruiser free for each faction...

I like the various people on various forums grumbling cuz "this kickstarter is a mess, these stretch goals are dumb, how could they not have planned this better" as if Hawk should've realized they'd exceed their target goal by 450% in less than 48 hours.

It reminds me of when another game kickstarter ended with 70,000 GBP or something like with a 35,000 GBP goal and some people were calling the kickstarter a failure and maybe the company should go back to the drawing board and try again, all because "well Mantic's Kickstarter got a million dollars therefore".

People are.... are not very bright, are they?

Went in for Captain with a friend. Unfortunately we both kinda want to play UCM so instead of each of us getting double starter fleets we'll probably just be splitting it. Still, it seems a better deal than 2x single starter bids. Plus maybe I'll be inspired and play Scourge instead.

Lol, ya, i have no real interest in scourge, but I will have what im assuming will be a valid full army once freebies are counted (7th cruiser, 4 free frigates (maybe 8?) probably a battle cruiser)... so i guess im basically just collecting forces so that my friends can play but not have to get anything...

Pick how much you want to contribute.
Pick the best level that is below your desired contribution.
Add additional currency to hit your desired amount (or you can do this at the end of the campaign).
Wait for PHR to unlock.
Reevaluate your choices.
Wait for campaign to end.
Reevaluate your choices. You can always increase your spend after conclusion of the Kickstarter.

Right now, i am in for Captain plus 90 pounds (ideally for the addition of 2 PHR starters). It aligns with how much i was planning to spend.

Just contribute how much you want now, and reevaluate as we get closer to the end.

I'm glad the kickstarter was funded, but between needing really high pledges for exclusives and the shipping cost to the US I'm just gonna wait till I can a starter from my local retailer. I'm also pretty happy that they're reserving stuff for retailers to sell, since this isn't the sort of Kickstarter my local place would back normally.

Mostly I'm trying to figure out how to get free stuff (one of the major perks of backing a kickstart as opposed to buying retail) as I will probably be spending as much as a captain pledge but not actually wanting the contents of the captain pledge.
