However when you're not modeling real world vehicles and you're instead coming up with entirely new spaceships what reason is there not to make them distinct in the first place?

Modular design is cheaper to mold than a 100% unique hull for every ship.

And modular design makes realistic sense too. But you can do it with modular designs:

Three spaceships, all using the same hull, all with a very distinct silhouette.

one thing i could have seen working out for the UCM ships with their split forward hull is having one large and one small hull half with identical attachment point. then you put one of each on the standard cruisers but ones that focus on the surface like troop carriers and bombardment get the larger hull as the lower one, light cruisers get two small hull halves and heavy cruisers get two large hull halves. gives you four hull silhouettes before adding the guns. Depending on how the parts are separated i might even attempt that.

That said, the biggest motivation behind the modular design seem mold cost and shelf space. Being a small game they do seem to care a lot about shelf space and they're going to repack DZC stuff too so for example gladii and scimitars are going to get combined into one blister with two hulls and four turrets.

Plus, the UCM's entire thing is that they make a lot of designs from the same parts whenever possible to ensure they will always have spare parts, etc. It's pretty evident with their units in Dropzone Commander and I really like it. I don't see any problem with carrying that over to their ship design. It also lets players have a feeling for a ship's capabilities or durability based entirely on its shape/profile even if they may not recognize every weapon on it automatically. After years of tabletop and video games, I don't have any problems telling the UCM ships apart and think they're fairly distinct from each other even if they share the same basic hulls. The weapons are a dead giveaway though I'll grant that the cruisers may be a little difficult to tell apart for new players, partly because there are just so many options. We'll see. The frigates are easy to tell apart though.

I've got no explanation for the Scourge ships. :iiam: No idea what their weapons are or even where they are.

I've run into a similar scenario before when I was teaching a friend how to play Blood Bowl. I had built a dwarf team out of ironbreakers, longbeards, hammerers, and slayers, but I hadn't painted it yet. He had trouble telling which was which because other than the slayers every model was a grey plastic stunty, bearded, armored dude. I didn't have the same problem just from sheer familiarity.

If you're not a Star Wars person, more or less the exact same game also comes in Star Trek and D&D flavours.

You could also try Dungeon Command which is small-squad 1v1 player D&D combat with prepainted minis.

All of them are reputedly pretty good, and I can personally vouch for X Wing and Dungeon Command. X Wing is by far the most played I think, though.

I don't think there's anyone doing big prepainted mass-battle army games, though, because that would be hellish expensive.

But don't forget, Kings of War literally only cares about unit sizes, rather than models; you could literally turn up with the right-sized rectangles of cardboard with unit names written on them if you wanted. I mean, it would be boring, but

Yeah. Wiz kids decided the right way to do things would be to make event-exclusive cards that were legal for tournament play. Surprisingly, FFG decided to make event-only promo versions of the retail-available cards and they are still desirable with people paying big bucks for them. And WOTC has done the same for years. Hmmmm.

It's not just that- the upgrade cards are crazy powerful compared to X-wing. When I gave STAW some play, it felt more like a CCG than a minis game. It got to a point where WizKids had to limit the amount of points that you could have in one ship to try to do away with 7+ modified green and red dice ships.

Oh, and uh, the ships are pointed based on a pure math formula that is god-awful. It would be even worse if the ship's base stats really mattered so much.

So to clarify, the base rules are the same in terms of listbuilding, maneuvering, and how attacking/defending works, it's just that Attack Wing has been horribly mismanaged?

Almost the same. The listbuilding allows for different pilots for ships, which means you end up with cookie cutter captain picard on borg cubes. The problem is mostly with this:

and that the simple math algorithm is a basic points addition per stat without including the special abilities.

(A) It doesn't matter whether it's a naval game or not; when you create a fictional universe you take on the responsibility of all the poo poo in that universe that you create.

(B) Tyranid stuff is actually way more distinct than literally any other army in the game; Imperial players are just really stupid. Even models that use the same basic profile (termagants, hormagaunts, and gargoyles) all have incredibly distinct outlines which make mistaking them impossible. The guns are really easy, too; I don't see how somebody can confuse a venom cannon for a barbed strangler but not confuse a grav gun for a plasma gun.
