Ah k yeah just finished the story and I got one towards the end. Debating if I want to get all the achievements some of them seem a little grindy though.

I got one from a dreadnought drop during a mission, can't remember which race dropped it.

I'm sure I got it during a mission because I haven't really gone on any pirate lord killing sprees. Same for a mk6 viridian laser. Right now I'm running around with a fully mk6 upgraded Minotaur, just destroying everything in my path, which is fun, but has probably spoiled me for the rest of the game. I can't keep a mercenary alive for more than about thirty seconds after hiring him, but I'm all but unkillable.

I killed one pirate lord and got a 250k bounty and some decent sellable loot. The next one I found, I could not catch with a mk5 warp drive.
He kept pulling away from me and I eventually gave up.

Religious nuts love to have jammers you see an error message on the Tab Target mode. But the component upgrade that puts little icons on ships from the pulse will still show the Icon that lets you know they have SOMETHING.

If not, at least they tend to carry gold or alien artifacts more often than other targets.

I gave up because literally any enemy at warp, even if I come at them from an angle, and they are alone, as soon as I get close enough it drops me out of warp because I'm too close to hostile craft, while they get to keep warping away.

You can't chase down Pirate Lords from behind. They have screens of chaff behind them at enough distance so that the boss will just keep on trucking while they drop you out of warp.

You need to veer off and come in from the side and slightly ahead of the group to get close enough to your mark. Or park yourself in their warp corridor.

The system average is, uh, not.

However, there's a graph marking highest and lowest prices per commodity you've seen lately, so just buy when you're kinda sorta close to the low and sell when you're kinda sorta close to the high.

I thought that graph mapped the price of that commodity at that station over time.

I think system average could be the median between high and low price in the system, not the average of all stations put together. Possibly some additional factor like high + low + the game's default value?

The other day I was looking to sell a bunch of gold & meteor diamonds in a system with a high average, but could not find a station with a price any better than what I paid for them. Was about to give up and start jumping gates to look for better systems when I happened across a transponder hack that gave me all markets. Wouldn't you know, there was one lonely station offering green money for those and pretty much everywhere else was red.

I don't think game really has a true economy -- quantities of goods aren't saved* and there isn't an active production / consumption system like in X3 (where factory stations had inputs and outputs). OTOH price swings definitely "contaminate" other stations somehow. Setting up a trade route just seems tedious because the limiting factor is stock, not price spread.
*you could exploit this by quit, load, buy stuff, repeat to fill up on cheap high-value goods, but you could also just use cheat engine

Definitely the best strategy is to do trade in the background while running missions, and concentrate only on the high-value goods like diamonds & pure water. Maybe pick up gold or nanofiber if there's an event so you can get a bunch at once. Any other stuff I sell as soon as I can. Don't care if the price is red, get that cheap poo poo out of my hold. Keep doing that until you have a big stock and liquidate it for big money.

Also live organs are an excellent thing to make a ton of money on with this method, if you can dock at cartel stations and use a ship with decent built-in cargo space (to make up for the smaller smuggler's holds).

How do you get in a good mood with the red-pirate factions anyhow? Killing people only gets on that factions bad side, doesn't seem to give any positive rep with their foes and the starting pirates that are hostile to you are kinda hard to avoid not zapping one or two off every now and then.
Their quests are pretty rare too and I find like 3 "kill these Red Devil fuckers" quests for every one of theirs that pop up. How much rep do I need to have them not hostile to me?

It does, yes. I saw a developer response to a question about this- I think it was on the steam forums- where he confirmed that the graph is just for that station.

He means that selling an antimatter speck to a trader funded his Mk6 warp drive.

The game doesn't give you numbers, but you've got to get the marker on the rep bar up out of the red zone. Red Devil missions seem to have a low chance to appear anywhere, but it's much more reliable to look for them at 'criminal' stations, where they appear more often than not. Surrendering goods when hailed will give trivial bonuses to rep, but farming those missions over and over is the only real way of doing it. Best to go pirate sooner than later if you're going to, so you don't have so much grinding to work through.

Also, be aware that missions on the pirate side of things are generally less varied and sometimes much harder than the usual legal paths.

Outsider stations (The ones with green map markers as opposed to white) will often have Red Devil missions. I don't think you can become friendly with any of the other pirate factions.

Be aware that getting to neutral with the Red Devil Cartel will promptly tank your Militia faction to Hostile and vice versa.

Also this.

On the other hand, I have noticed they have a proclivity for showing up during other missions I'm doing, far more than the Militia ever did during my first playthrough anyway. Just be aware that if you're escorting a trader and you run into Red Devils, you're failing that mission.

It's easiest in a new game, because you start out just a little bit negative with the Red Devil Cartel. You can pick up missions that give +rep for them in Outsider stations (the green 4-swirl logo). Many are +cartel rep in exchange for -militia, but if you shop around you can find +cartel for -thugs missions. I burned a bit of my initial militia rep and got neutral with both. This is cartel only: you can't ever ally with the alien pirates.

Now that I've done this, I'd say it's actually the easy-mode, at least for the early game. The Hellion is amazing as your first ship upgrade -- cheap, fast, four midline turrets. Secondly you have another faction that will occasionally help you out in missions where you're killing stuff, or at least not fight you. And third you have access to more markets.

The downside: it's really hard to advance in the mercenary guild while staying positive with the cartel. Plus the militia is at risk too if you take the merchant guild blockade deliveries that pay so well. It starts becoming a pain to balance neutrality with everyone later on because the mission rep is more even-handed.

What are you using for your secondary weapon? EMP Flak absolutely wrecks swarms of fighters, especially if you have a couple of pulse or flak turrets to wipe out the disabled ships.

Cathair
Jan 7, 2008
Yeah, you need to go back and grind out enough to at least upgrade your shields and deflector. Ships are basically just platforms, worth very little as an upgrade unless you have the stuff to put on them, and the difference upgrading makes is huge.

It's one of the major issues I'd criticize the game for: regular gameplay is hard if you don't have the proper upgrades for a given system, and easy if you do, with very little in-between.

E: For dealing with swarms, you also need a good booster. Most of the other equipment types are matter-of-taste tradeoffs, but for boosters there's practically no reason to ever use the standard 'sub-light' model over null grav or slamjets. For slower ships null-grav is usually the better choice, for the Minotaur either will work.

Don't try to fight within a swarm, haul rear end out and pick them off from outside. Long-range weapons and lasers help- neutron beam broadsides are actually a slow but reliable anti-fighter solution.

I just stopped running merchant guild missions after getting a Minotaur. Its a ship for killing things from a controlled angle in combat missions, and surrounding it with blockade ambushes is a good way to die just cause you can't move to a preferable location fast enough.

You or someone else said this before and I still have no idea what you're talking about. First, a 'ship for killing things from a controlled angle in combat missions' describes literally every ship, your shield and armor values are independent of your chassis and nothing can survive fighting smack-dab in the middle of a swarm, unless your poo poo is so OP for that system that you can just laugh off anything.

Second, the Minotaur is quite fast, iirc the next fastest thing to the Sturville. Easily the speediest of the large ships. Are you sure you aren't getting it mixed up with the Manticore?

At this point I am convinced the toughness of mission spawned ships is tied more to your overall net worth/best equipment, than the difficulty ratings on the job board.

It would basically explain everything, for that insane "Why are these hellion frigate traders vastly more powerful than that Random bounty Dreadnaught I killed in literally 30 seconds with my Tennhousen?" mission difficulty spike once I started taking jobs in systems with MK4 parts for sale. On top of my habit of saving up to buy the next grade of defense parts, before going back to fill out my guns. (I have MK5 shields/deflector/hull! Time to finish replacing those last two MK3 turrets with MK4, in this "Low thread" system that sells MK4 tops).

I got two mk6 weapon drops from enemy ships, when running low difficulty missions in a sector that sold MK4 stuff tops. That's more MK6 weapon drops than what I saw finishing off the storyline in MK6 sales sectors. So I wouldn't be surprised if mission spawned enemies were in fact packing loving MK5-MK6 defenses on my "low difficulty" missions in sectors that didn't even sell them was the cause of my insane mission difficulty spike experience.

Even where I ended with MK6 everything and a Minotaur, mission spawned ships are always tougher than naturally spawning ships. It's just less noticable when you are running at top of the line Destroyer compared to "Oh my god, I can literally kill Dreadnaughts in 30 seconds with my Sturvile... Unless it's a Low difficulty mission then HOLY gently caress".
