SaNChEzZ posted:The one thing about the cage that makes me say no is the bar spacing being 22mm at points. If birdo can get his head through the bars, it's potentially dangerous. Other than that it's great. I did have a look around for recommended bar spacing for Senegals and found a variety of answers, some saying a max of 3/4", some 7/8" (and a few even saying 1") but since the manufacturer and the retailer list it as being suitable for Senegals I assumed it would be ok. The wider spacing is on the horizontal bars on the sides, the narrower spacing is on the vertical bars on the front and back if that makes a difference. Would be annoying to have to return this since it's already assembled... I might wait until I get a bird to see?

But it's just something to be weary of and pay attention for. I'd say you're safe until he figures out if he can get his head through, which he may not even figure out!

If you worked night shifts, would it be possible to have a parrot on a schedule where they sleep during the day and they're up at night? Like bed at 6am and up at 6pm or something. As a note, I don't have a bird or any plans to get one, I'm just curious about whether or not you could have a night owl parrot.

Noxville posted:Ok, so I've been wanting to get a parrot for a good long time now and I'm in the position where I can afford it and have a large enough place. I'm intending to get a bird very soon and wanted to run my thinking by people with more experience than I since I wouldn't want to get an animal that's going to be unhappy. One other thing is that Sennies (other conures and parrots, too, but senegals especially) can be become one-person birds. This can become awkward if you have a special someone you want to come over, and could potentially be a relationship wrecker. Keeping a bird well-socialized is possible (and I think is a responsibility for a pet owner) but it can be hard if you don't often have company, and the vagaries of life can always get in the way. Law of good intentions and all. Basically, be prepared to make a 30-year commitment or more, and do what you can to get the bird used to other people while you can

DarkHorse posted:Sounds like you're approaching this with the right responsibility, so good for you! Yeah, Senegal Parrots are notorious for having a favorite human and that's it. Charlie would straight up attack people if I left him out when he was in puberty. Nowadays he'll just chill next to me or on top of tiels' cage when I have him out and have company over, and he'll gladly take food from people, but he won't let anyone else handle him. On the flip side they're known for being very independent and not particularly needy. Charlie is a bit of a velcro bird when he's out but he'll often find something to chew on that's way more interesting than me and when he's in the cage he doesn't get all nuts or do contact calling. The best description I've read about Senegals is that unlike most species they have a really long attention span so they're good at keeping themselves occupied.

Quakers are known for that too, but it honestly comes down to how much you force them onto other people. They are colony birds in the wild after all. Bobbys really cute so visitors love him so hes used to being handled by strangers, which is awesome because hes way less fussy than youd expect at the vet. Dunno how that will transfer to other species but even the strongest of 1 mate birds would have to work together/be around others at some point in the wild. With enough socialising it should be possible to end up with a bird whos atleast accepting of strangers, if not happy. Would depend on the individual birds personality

I know you said you were not getting a grey but If you are in the UK I would be very wary of buying one from up north, there is a guy who is farming them. I won't link but if you go on any of the free ad/bird mart kind of web sites you will soon notice him on every one. The babies are genetically sound but the poor females are being bred to death as he's taking the eggs away as soon as they are hatched and incubating/hand raising so he can get them to lay yet more eggs. Tempting as it might be to pay £300-£400 for a £800 bird like with all farms if no one buys then he will stop doing it.

Well okay not this morning This morning he was chattering at me while I watched Kiska get REALLY MAD at the local Little Black Cat, a feral-ish barn cat our landlords feed and who was outside the door sitting in KISKA'S DRIVEWAY. Judah apparently found all this quite entertaining and was providing me with a running commentary. There were more "wanna water?" and "pretty boyyy" moments than I remember from most sports commentating however.

Late+usual lovely camera but Carrot stick with a tiny bit of carrot hummus on one end. He spent a while very carefully licking off all the hummus, then shredded the carrot into pieces without eating a single bit It was really bright and sunny so I covered a bit of Steve's cage, so two perches were in the shade instead of just his favourite ladder and floor spot. He seemed to appreciate it but uh decided hanging out clinging to the cage corner was much better than sitting comfortably on a perch A Saucy Bratwurst posted:Collision course (with my head) Your cockatoo photos are great

Yesterday, Gnosis chased Eris a bunch, trying to preen her. She was having none of it, but didn't get aggressive. It was hilarious. Also, I think she's starting to mimic the budgies' burbles and chatter!

The photo you posted of all three of them makes it look like either Eris is tiny, or you have some massive budgies, since they look almost the same sizes

She was hunched over a bit, but I think it might be both. Also, Gnosis was seriously puffed up. He's usually about 3/4 that size.

Gnosis is the one up top! The grump at the bottom is Hubris. Also, it's Eris's cage, not the budgies'. He's the invader.

Tendai posted:Oh, Steve I bet if there was a cockatiel frat he and Judah would be idiot friends. Ohtori has probably ruined Steve's attitude towards other birds. When he first arrived he wanted to be buddies with Ohtori and was all curious, and in return would get repeatedly attacked and harassed. Now Ohtori is okay with him, and Steve eventually accepted that (and now as you know they have this weird gay sort-of-relationship thing going on) but he doesn't want to be near Inko at all. They've shared the window perch once or twice but that's about it. Inko is mildly intimidated but curious towards both, but neither want to know him.

Budgies and especially parrotlets, I have never seen a more aggressive bird in general than goddamn Pacific parrotlets, they have no sense of their own size and oh man their angry noises are adorable. oh my god yes, I had a parrotlet and he would make the funniest noise as he went around trying to headbutt people he bullied pearl on occasion but no big fights. she did have one moment of triumphant revenge, where he was sitting on my shoulder and she was hiding on my mom's. suddenly she ran across both of our chests and gave his tail a yank! ...and of course hauled rear end back to mom before he could do anything about it.
