This episode was a good idea but was poorly pulled off. I don't know why they even needed to connect the serial killers to visiting the hotel besides the now obvious set up that the detective is the serial killer. They coulda just said, "All great serial killers end up here... one way or another" and saved on 5 minutes of screen time.

the real vampire of this show is every solitary second Chloe Sevigny's character (and that intolerable child-sized disaster) are on the screen. It's like she got hit in the head with a coconut in the past year and all her ability to convincingly act in C-tier cable dramas evaporated. Like, her personal style is this weird 1930s schoolmarm hamminess, but it's just not working with this weak material

It is disappointing that with each season we get more murderporn and less good storytelling. If I want to watch gore then Saw is available.

I thought this was the best episode so far, I prefer killing in american horror story instead of gay sex.

Hay hay hay!
I'm absolutely loving this season. Best since Asylum for me so far. There's still time for it all to go to poo poo though.

The set design is amazing and costuming also brings so much to the show.

So Veronica Mars junkie died and was sewn into the mattress, but got out? On the plus side it seems if you get out of the hotel, you get to die for reals. Better deal than the bloody Murderhouse.

I think when Countess Gaga was talking about the sunlight thing she was implying too much time in the sun would age you, not like weaken powers or anything. There don't seem to be any powers beyond her hypnostare, anyway.

The not vampire stuff is weird, but fun. I hope being Gaga's vampire slave/lover/nanny means Chloe Sevigny can dress hot now because I bet Ryan Murphy loves some Party Monster as much I do.

This season is fun and I like it. I appreciate having a human element being tormented by the crazy poo poo once more. I always thought the lack of that is what screwed Coven and Freakshow so hard.

Its more like previous seasons always got bored of their own main plots mid-season, or mid-episode. With this one its like they realized that and decided not to have an overarching plot at all.

I think he was talking about the rape golem (that's what I'm going to keep calling it even though we know its official name) in the first episode. Which happened largely as he said, except that the guy popped up later seemingly still alive.

It's better than both Freak Show and Coven, you're just still expecting another Asylum or Murder House and that's not ever going to happen again. The rest of us have accepted this and moved on, so unless the show pulls a Freak Show and gets boring or a Coven and gets irredeemably stupid (as opposed to endearingly stupid) then I'm still on board.

This.

Also how does this season not have an overarching plot? It may be bogged down by excess but there are a few things that have been touched on every episode. Gaga has Sevigny and Detective's kid. Dude has taken over hotel and Tate and Gaga are not pleased. Kathy Bates has kid drama now tied to the Gaga poo poo even more than it already was. Detective has that case that yeah will probably end up being him or inconsequential. Sarah Paulson is, uh ... There I guess.

I'm not saying this is great stuff or on par with the first two seasons, but at least it has a direction so far and it's sticking to it far more closely than Coven and Freakshow could by this point.

Also I haven't missed Lange one bit. I love her but they never did anything fun with her.

She was so totally amazing in Asylum that I think Murphy was trying to capture that magic again in the next couple of seasons but just didn't have it in him to write a character like Sister Jude. Did Murphy even have much involvement in Season 2? I seem to recall that it was the one he was least involved in and it turned out to be hands-down the best season.

Exactly. Just the ssme character over and over. She killed it every year, but it could have been so much more to take this talented actress and make her play something different each year.

I vaguely remember an I interview where Murphy mentioned that he was busy for most of Season 2, but was planning to be closely involved with Season 3. It would be great if someone managed to drag up that interview.

I wouldn't be surprised if Murphy is delegating some of his creative authority this season to focus more on Scream Queens and American Crime Story.

Well they're always full of excess, but what I meant was each previous season had a main plot amongst all that. Murder House was about a rocky marriage in a house that manifested the spirits of the dead, Asylum was about a journalist wrongfully imprisoned in a crazy house, Coven was about the Supreme reluctant to pass the torch to her successor. I didn't watch Freak Show so I dunno. But Hotel has three main plots that each could be the dominant one, yet so far none is: another ghost-filled building, the not-vampires, and the Ten Commandments killer investigation.

Yep this is pretty much right and is screenwriting 101.

The problem with Ryan Murphy ran shows is twofold. One is that AHS is a visual show. He goes for shock value by showing things that TV viewing audiences aren't used to and the plot is spawned around these sideshow attractions. The other problem is that Ryan Murphy shows are star-studded between their own re-occurring actors and their latch-on stars. This creates even more plotlines because the writers of AHS are forced to use their stable of actors plus Lady Gaga and Cathy Bates and Angela Basset and Emma Roberts and whatever other failing star is told to go into TV by their agent.

This season is definitely all over the place at the moment. We have many significant storylines that branch too far away from a cohesive 'main plot' ala Murder House. You have Lady Gaga's vampire crew, the Ten Commandments killer, the ghosts of the hotel, and I'm sure there will be more curveballs as the season goes in, like Basset's revenge plan against Gaga. Despite all these different plots there is no clear goal at the end. You can totally run as many plotlines as you want but they have to be clearly connected. So far it feels like the only way these plotlines are connected are through the detective and his character doesn't command the screen like other people in this series.

esperterra

I can definitely agree on the lack of any one of those storylines being a clear cut main plot and that still being a weakness here. The only semblence of any 'main' storyline is all the tendrils from each one reaching out toward Gaga, but who knows if that will actually build up to anything by season's end. (It won't, thx Murphy).

When I mentioned it before I meant it moreso in comparison to 3 and 4, which tried to have storylines and dropped all or most of them in due time, some never to appear again or be brought up just in time for a finale. Hotel is at least still trucking through the stories it has at this point.

e: now that it's on my mind, the only character I can think of atm not connected to Gaga and her story in some significant way is Sally, and maybe Liz though we don't know what her deal is yet

I'm betting on the SWAT scene just being a setpiece for the hotel's horrors and various ghastly residents and traps.

Come to me .... and live forever.
I think the SWAT team's going to be another mulligan, like when he was arresting Sally in the elevator.

If the theory that Lowe is the Commandments Killer slowing going even more insane turns out to be true, he can be the connecting factor. The ghosts haunting/taunting him without actually killing him (including the Addiction Demon channeling his alcoholism,) and the idea of going after Gaga for, say, "Thou Shalt Have No Others Gods Before Me." Possibly Alex for coveting their son so much.
