Neither the old Nexus (forget what it's called, my N7 2013 uses it) launcher nor the Google Now launcher used on newer devices does this.

Nova does this on reboot sometimes, as does the stock Sony launcher on my Xperia tablet. I've just gotten in the habit of saving the settings in Nova before rebooting for any reaason. For my Sony I just :dealwithit:

I got my 5X today and like it so far, except for one thing. The vibration motor feels like it's making the case rattle, and it's very noticeable with haptic feedback turned on.

My wife's original Nexus 5 does this as well, while my Nexus 5 had a nice, smooth, quiet vibration.

Has anyone with a new 5X noticed this? It's really disconcerting, but I don't want to return it if this is just normal for the 5X.

AT&T: Not Even Once.

What's weird is that there IS a distinct LMY48W with no carrier-specific declaration. There are multiples declared only for each of T-Mobile or Project Fi.

... Did Google seriously make a "totally not just AT&T we swear" build? Even so there should have been an OTA by now, but see above.

Trying clearing the cache? Or maybe it's something to do with your previous device still listed? I went into Play Music -> Settings -> Your Devices and deleted my old phone, but I don't know if that matters. I hadn't experienced any issues but seemed like something I should do.

Sorry, by case I meant the chassis of the phone (my Diztronic case won't be here for a couple more days).

The vibration is really loud compared to my Nexus 5. I'm just wondering if anyone else who also owned a 5 is noticing a considerably louder vibrate motor on the 5X.

Gonna try this at home. Don't want to lose the little music there is on the phone, because I'm in the night shift currently. Data plan doesn't allow to resync. It's just strange behavior, because the cache's like 600MB, which is more than 33 songs.

I highly encourage everyone moving to the 5x and 6P consider using a real, long, password for their device. The password you choose, be it PIN or Pattern or actual password is what drives the device encryption.

So a long, say 15+ character password with punctuation, numbers, etc. serves to make your device basically unable to be unlocked without you. And the fingerprint reader makes it crazy easy to use day to day. Fingerprints can be compelled without a warrant, but a password cannot. Just power down your phone if you're worried.

I personally am happy to have this and plan to be going through customs and immigration from here on out with my phone off.

I'd also recommend Signal for messaging, but that's probably too :tinfoil: to get people off of Telegram or WhatsApp.

My 5X has a vibration motor so strong that when I first used it I thought there was a touchscreen sound enabled. I'm a bit more used to it now.

Long shot, but you may want to try de-authorizing any old devices you no longer use with GPM. Maybe it's seeing those other 91 songs as already registered to the maximum number of devices while the others aren't there yet. On the other hand I'm almost positive that isn't how Play Music works and you'd be able to tell right away by whether the 33 songs showing are your 33 most recent.

Couldn't they just as easily compel you to, you know, turn on the phone and then force you to provide your fingerprint? I know with password-only you can simply claim to have suddenly forgotten the password, so would not the simplier solution to be leaving the phone on with password-unlocking and disabling the fingerprint unlock until you actually require its convenience again?

You can configure an Android device to require a password upon boot to decrypt the user data volume. I might be wrong, but I would assume that at that stage of the boot process, the fingerprint reader won't work and you have to use the real password.

Well, that pretty neatly explains the reason why then.

So I guess you really should only completely disable fingerprint unlocking in day-to-day life if you are knowingly engaged illegal poo poo and that what's on your phone would definitely incriminate you.

I never use this feature because I'm afraid my phone will reboot in the middle of the night and I'll miss my alarm (would sit on the password screen).

A lot of the 33 were music I've uploaded and the rest the last additions I made. I did revoke some device authorizations a few days ago, but it wasn't the phone itself.

I cleared data and cache and get it resync. It did then download all songs but one. Since the list isn't that huge, I found the song it skipped, removed and readded it to the playlist, then it downloaded it too. I left the phone overnight, just to find that that one song disappeared again. However when I hit refresh, it "downloaded" it again (it retrieved it from the device cache). Their sync mechanism seems hosed, because I found plenty of similar complaints of spontaneous attacks of Play Music alzheimers over a large date range.

If I recall correctly, porn isn't the issue. Customs agents are allowed to hook up unsecured phones to a device that scans them for "copyright violating media files." They cannot, however, compel you to unlock a password-protected phone. I am unsure if this extends to fingerprint unlocking, but this goon says it does.

Password length isn't relevant to this scenario, and lol if you think the government doesn't have some way to bypass the password entirely, either directly or through Google.

With the TypeA-TypeC adapter consistently out of stock on Android market, what's a good place to get them in Canuckistan? I'd get my old micro USB cables from monoprice/primecables in the past but half of them turn out to be duds after a week. It still ends up being pretty cheap in comparison to the alternatives, but I'd like to not have to play the cable roulette for once.

e2: Goddamnit, I did a factory reset to try and get the Tap & Go restore again. But instead of starting from scratch, it said my phone was previously synced and asked me to log into my google account, leaving me with only the Google online backup option. I really wanted to get the touch restore going since it seems a lot better at transferring state than the online backup. No ideas? :(

I'm pretty sure they *can* compel you to unlock a fingerprint-protected phone, hence the guy above saying he will turn off his phone going through customs. (I assume Android fingerprints work like iOS in that you have to use a password the first time you unlock your phone after booting.)

For both Apple and Android the password chosen directly feeds into the encryption key for the userspace. So, there should be no way to bypass it. Apple has been getting some attention on this front as the Justice department is finding out that they're serious that nothing can be done.

And yes, I would recommend a long, complicated, password set to prompt on boot then use your fingerprint day to day. That leaves userspace completely encrypted until the password is put in, no amount of sucking the data off the device will do anything but yield encrypted data.

None of that solves the getting beaten with a pipe until you put in the password scenario, but it would keep prying eyes from rummaging through your phone legally.

Here is one of the legal decisions that says a fingerprint is not protected by the 5th amendment.

I was thinking of the NSA. Given leaked documents, we know that they've: intercepted shipments of infrastructure-level routing hardware and installed compromised firmware; gotten deliberately-insecure changes into open source crypto projects; and--most relevant to this specific issue--fed info on activity not actually related to their mission to the DoJ, who constructed legal avenues to get at the data they already knew was there without disclosing in court how they actually knew about it. I'm of the opinion that literally any password (edit: as far as phones are concerned) is good enough for keeping out authorities who will actually follow the law, and nothing can be done about authorities that won't. Device passwords are for keeping out snooping friends/relations, and in case your device is stolen.

Not to say that a decent password is a bad thing, I was just commenting on long passwords in the context of going through customs, law, etc.

And thanks for that article!

I don't think this is completely correct. Assuming your assumptions are correct (they're definitely plausible) about the NSA's ability to get into your password protected phone, they're not going to share that ability with every ole law enforcement entity that wants to see what you've got on your phone.
