Is it because it's detecting that you're setting your phone down for a certain amount of time instead of carrying it in your pocket? Sounds good to me if that's the case. Actually scratch that that would probably get annoying.

Asus will be selling some different variants of the Zenfone 2 here in the U.S. pretty soon. Android Police posted:The Zenfone 2 Laser is similar to the regular ZenFone 2, except there's a laser autofocus module on the back. It also runs on a Snapdragon 615 instead of the Intel chip used in other Zenfones, and there's a removable battery. It comes in both 16GB ($199) and 32GB ($249) variants...

In fairness, that law is outdated and has yet to be challenged at the SCC (I'm willing to bet it would be changed, if/when challenged), and customs officers still must have reasonable grounds to search. But yeah, Americans don't realize this and get owned when coming in.

My first (last?) Nexus 5X complaint - Adaptive Brightness sucks, real bad. I hope it's one of those things that gets patched/fixed in an update but it is terrible right now. I can't even find any rhyme or reason as to why the brightness is nearly constantly fluctuating between so-dark-as-to-be-unreadable, and "normal". I thought it was through a sensor on the face of the phone but if that's the case it needs some tuning. I'll be sitting at my desk, pick up my phone and look at it - it's at "normal" brightness on waking up. Then after 10 seconds it becomes extremely dark instantly - no gradation or slow adjustment, just bam. I will tap through and try to do stuff, the brightness is still super dark, and then after maybe a minute of this it will then become super bright again. The lighting around my desk is completely unchanged. I've compensated by adjusting the default brightness to be higher which seems to make the "dark periods" also brighter, but the behaviour is still the same. I don't have a screen protector on or anything ( I read conflicting reviews of the protectors blocking the light sensor and loving with this specifically ), and am just using the speck case from Google that has all the right cut-outs/ports open. Is this just me? Is it a thing with Nexuses and adaptive brightness ( I read reports of similar issues with the 5 on release that was fixed when patched? ) Should I just use Lux or something similar instead? Or should I just say gently caress it and turn off adaptive brightness entirely? It's weird coming from a Z2, where the auto-brightness worked perfectly and was relatively gradual in it's change. I didn't think this would be something that would actually be worse on a newer phone.

I ended up replacing my white-backed 5X with a black-backed 5X, and have both for a few days before I have to ship the white one back. What's the best way to copy the state of one phone over to the other? The setting up a new device method loses most user data. edit: Black one is definitely less slippery than the white one. Feels good, but not as soft as the N5. spoof fucked around with this message at 20:55 on Nov 3, 2015 |

Can anybody tell me what is up with my Nexus 6 the past 2 days? I'm using the stock charger and cable, but it will lose charge while I'm using it despite being plugged in. I've swapped cables and chargers, but still the same thing happens. While I'm at it, why don't the percentages for drains under the Battery section in Settings add up to 100%?

I don't care about NFC to be honest, and I've literally never seen anyone use it. Although yeah it is odd that they would take it out... wonder if it was to offset cost of the extra GB of ram? Solution is to put Lux to sleep and do whatever seemed to be broken, then re-enable it.

Oh you mean not being able to click options? Yeah that's a security thing, its not Lux specific, and that's what the sleep list is for. It doesn't actually break stuff Anything like that won't work with any kind of overlay, its just Lux is probably the most popular app out there using one

Yeah, but what if your battery percentage is going down while it's plugged in? I've been using my phone since this afternoon trying to figure out what's wrong with it. It's been plugged in that entire time to the included QuickCharge... charger, yet never gains any charge. It also typically loses ~3% when I reboot. It did gain charge last night, but it's been plugged in all day and right now is at 57% in Safe Mode. One thing I noticed is that now when it's plugged in and I wake the screen, it says "Charging" at the bottom, but no longer lists the estimated time until a full charge. In fact, I've caught it once or twice while it's plugged in with the lightning bolt icon in the top right corner yet says "Not Charging" in the Battery section of Settings. Is this a bug in Marshmallow?

The reports I heard were that the 720p ZF2 (not sold in the US) got pretty great battery life.

Everyone who has bad Nexus 5 battery life, just how bad has it been in your experience? My own experience has been atrocious. My battery was losing ~20% charge per hour when the phone was locked and idle, and the battery lasted ~1 hour of screen on usage. The back of the phone, at the top (immediately to the right of the camera when looking at the back) had been getting quite hot, again even with the phone locked. Even better, the battery usage indicator in Settings had been telling me WiFi was on at all times -- even if I turned WiFi off, and even if the phone was powered off + battery dead. I took the back off the phone to investigate and noticed that with the back off battery life is far better -- hours of screen on usage, and kinda reasonable percentage drops per hour when idle. I guess the back was causing some kind of short which was discharging the battery. I've covered the back of the phone in electrical tape and am waiting for the Nexus 6P I ordered a month ago to arrive. (Which has not shipped, by the way. What the hell?)

Impressions on 6P. Good: Marshmallow Battery Life (destroys my S6) Fingerprint sensor Speakers More room on homescreens for apps/widgets Always on "Ok Google" (great for cooking, playing music, setting alarms) Now on tap (works for me more than reviewers, maybe im just expecting less?) Middle: Camera is okay, coming from a S6. The S6 was better at just picking the right foreground/background and shooting. I also liked the ability to say "shoot" and it would just take a pic. Both have the quick launch camera which is good. Bad: Physical buttons (this is annoying when you have the phone on the table, theres no double tap to wake). The screen buttons also take up real estate. The usb-c->a is ridiculously small (a cable for ants?) Stock dialer Stock gallery app (using aperture, dunno if I like it).

I will never understand this complaint. If you really like the feel of physical or capacitive buttons, that's one thing, but "takes up screen space" just doesn't make sense to me.

Yea what about the times i'm just reading a website, or anything that isn't a video? It still uses part of the screen that could be using content. I would get that argument if the screen ended at the bottom of the phone but there is a large bezel with a speaker. Just put some buttons there (and not the lovely Samsung ones). Ideally the screen is as big as possible in that form factor which I think is ideal for my hands.

The trouble is you can't (or at least shouldn't) put buttons too close to the bottom edge of the phone. Samsung does but that's what makes them so awkward to reach.
