kazil posted:Another time where someone posts in the Stuff You Cant Believe You Just Figured Out thread without doing research. I have personally witnessed at least 3 witches flying through tilted windows. I think the confusion is over whether we're talking about witches as "mythological female masters of dark arts" or "high priestesses of Wiccan covens". Because I can't possibly see any of the latter being able to fit themselves through a window of that size.

Well that's ignoring that there are really two types of Wiccans...the aforementioned hambeast type and the weird and tiny ones who tend to have some sort of autoimmune disorder like Crohn's disease or Sjögren's syndrome.

He looks younger than he is to me in that clip.

For a bit of etymology that isn't questionable for a change, "fortnight" has precisely jack to do forts, and in reality is basically just a contraction of "fourteen nights."

You can press the number keys to jump to absolute positions (X/10) in a video on YouTube. 5 is exactly halfway, etc. An extension I use for Chrome - HoverZoom - pops up images when mousing over an image link. I just found out today that when the link is to an imgur gallery, you can scroll through the gallery. I now wonder how many china.jpg galleries I missed because I just saw one image and didn't know it was a gallery.

That "Camus" is supposed to be pronounced "ka-moo". Now I can't take it seriously because I imagine it said the way Billy Connelly says "We're going to Peru!" in a Series of Unfortunate Events.

You know that new South Park game coming up? Fractured but Whole? Only yesterday, when someone laughed at the name, did I realise it's a very obvious pun. Yeah... "Wait, it's funny? Fractured but-ooooooh, yeah, that's funny." In my defense, English isn't my native language and I'm not an auditory reader, but still, I'm kind of ashamed how I missed something that obvious.

I didn't just figure this out, but it took me a while to realise that "arse" was a thing, and the proper spelling in Brit English. I saw "rear end" written first because of American cultural osmosis and assumed only pronunciation was different.

If you want to make someone feel stupid: "Uh, wages have been falling for 40 years." If you want to politely point out an oversight: "Er, wages have been falling for 40 years." It turns out that the second version started out as just the British spelling, and Er was pronounced with a soft r, like Uh. After seeing it in print, people sometimes say "Er."

The vowel sound in "butt" is clearly pronounced but in "but" it's de-emphasised and the whole word is rushed over. If you were taking care to pronounce it clearly they'd sound the same, but in the normal way people speak they're different.

Butt sounds the same as but - the difference in pronunciation is almost imperceptible, if it exists at all. Says Google: butt: /bʌt/ but: /bʌt,bət/ Same first pronunciation.
