What plugs did you use and did you gap them? Is your RFI shunt ground braid strap from the rear driver corner of the head to the firewall in good shape? It's widely misunderstood, it's a flat braided strap because they have lower impedance at radio frequencies than a round conductor for the same cross sectional area and its only purpose in life is to shunt RFI from the ignition system on the passenger side to ground before it can interfere with the sensors on the other side of the engine. A much larger round wire that most people like to swap in is fine too, OEMs are just penny pinchers and would rather use a tiny flat braid than a big fat round cable. Everything else sounds fine. I was going to say check if your coil is cracked and bulging but you already covered that.

So I'm planning on checking out that MJ this weekend and if all looks good dragging it back home! I was planning on renting a Uhaul auto transport trailer and towing it with my WK with the 5.7L HEMI. The 5.7 is rated for a gross trailer weight of 7200 lbs and the MJ and trailer should be about 5000. I've read up on hookup and driving technique with the trailer attached but anything else to keep in mind so I don't kill myself/everyone else on the road? Should I get a sway control or weight distributing system? Towing a total of 200 miles. Any advice appreciated!

Auto transport as in 4 wheels off the ground or 2 wheels off the ground? If 2 wheels, you need to make sure you don't damage the driveline, which is reasonably easy.

kastein posted:What plugs did you use and did you gap them? NGK v-power copper plugs, gapped to .035. I can't remember what the previous ones were; either Champion or Bosch coppers. I'm going to pull them and take a look at them today since it's been about 6 months and see if there's any sort of fouling or damage. I replaced the RFI with some of the 4AWG I had, but the problem was there before I even touched any of that. Just hoping I didn't gently caress up a valve or something while cranking when/if the timing was off due to trying to get the distributor exact. Also strange that it's much less frequent now in the cooler weather. It was really persistent when sitting at lights in the summer heat. IAC had a little bit of build-up, but very little for not having been cleaned in almost 2 years. Same for the TB. Runs perfectly fine otherwise.

Glad to hear on the transport trailer. Sounds fine to me. The 4.0 is a non interference motor and you didn't muck with the timing chain, so no chance you blew anything up internal to the engine. Running better with cooler weather makes me think vapor lock/boiling issues, maybe. It's rare on non-precat vehicles, but it does sometimes happen.

So on my jeep there is some random thing hanging on the frame near the right rear wheel. Anyone know what it is. It looks like it doesn't do anything any more.

Should it still hang from that? How much effort should I expend on fixing it?

If it's not rattling like crazy and driving you nuts you could just leave it be. If it is, go to your local parts store and get a universal exhaust hanger for a couple bucks, strap it to that part of the exhaust, and bolt it where the old one bolts in. Pretty excited, the budget boost for the WJ came in and it seems like they're pretty decent quality Delrin spacers. The 31.5" General Grabber AT2's clear without rubbing at the moment, but this will give the Jeep a bit of breathing room. Scored a navigation head unit (RB1) from an Overland WJ in the yard over the weekend along with the GPS antenna and DVD as well. Was able to get an Aux-in converter box that plugs right into the CD changer plug on the back of the unit. It's pretty cool that swapping that (relatively mediocre, but cool) nav head unit in is completely plug and play for 02+ Jeeps. It's hanging lower than normal and putting more strain on the rest of the rusty exhaust. It's only a little bit of welding to keep the rest from suddenly departing.

Agreed. Without that mount it's probably going to crack a pipe somewhere sooner rather than later.

I would fix it if I were you - it's a super easy thing to fix to make sure you don't wreck whatever is left of the lovely exhaust. You could also buy a brand new shiny cat-back exhaust, they come with hangers installed

Ehhh, the real answer here is to use this as an excuse to buy: - 1 100 amp fluxcore welder, not HF - 1 auto darkening welding mask - 1 4.5" angle grinder - at least 1 foot of 1/2" round solid steel rod stock at home depot - 1 1/2" fender washer - 1 big rear end cotter pin Bore a hole through the steel rod stock about 1/2" from the end sized for the cotter pin. This is so the washer and cotter pin act as retainers for the rubber bushing since you can't forge a knob/ridge onto it like the factory one. Bend a right angle in the rod stock about where the stock bend is leaving the rubber bushing. Cut this whole mess to length so it goes down to the bottom of the exhaust tube next to it, jack the exhaust up 1/2", booger weld it onto the pipe, insert cotter pin and washer. Now you've spent 500 bucks on a 200 dollar fix, but you have welding toys!

Yeah, there's a lot of anti-JK sentiment, even though it seems like half of the more built up rigs in the club started out their lives as JKs I'll just continue insisting that they all have too few cylinders, while also wishing I had a JKU.

I'm going to just be an angry old man on my porch yelling about solid axles over here. No solid axles? Get it outta here, I'll buy a Subaru if I want independent suspension, at least it only takes 2 hours to pull a Subaru motor. Honestly I was sorta bumming about it this morning with some buyers remorse, feeling like I'd gotten in wayyy over my head (probably true), but drove it around the block a few times tonight and couldn't stop grinning like an idiot, feeling much better about it now. The brakes need work for sure but they're not as bad as I thought, the floor pans are pretty bad but rockers and frame seem good as far as I can tell. Runs and shifts great. I'm sure I'll be posting a million dumb questions in here but I wanted a project and I got one haha.

My poor XJ started having cooling problems, steaming and barfing coolant everywhere this weekend, so I ended up bringing it into the shop since it was beyond my skillset. They replaced the water pump and thermostat, did a coolant flush, and they had to replace a rusty pipe (thanks salty winter roads). Got a pretty good deal on everything, and on top of that, they managed to somehow fix my belt squealing issues. Everything feels and sounds so much better now. Now maybe I should pick up some loving rain guards for this thing!
