Okay I just got back from seeing Spectre and yeah, Moviebob is full of poo poo. This movie was pretty fun, not as good as Skyfall or Casino Royale, but a solid 007 film that actually has more in common with Roger Moore Bond than anything else. Decent 3 out of 4 Craig films. Nowhere near the level of garbage that Die Another Day or A View To A Kill.

Here is an article Bob wrote for Birth Movies Death, a monthly magazine associated with the Alamo Drafthouse: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Is Killing Auteur Theory. Good.

Moviebob posted:

Without the widespread adoption of their Auteur Theory by film scholars both official and otherwise, we likely wouldn’t have had the New Hollywood moment of the '70s, the rise of the mega-director (hello, Mr. Spielberg) in the '80s, the reappraisal of hardworking/undervalued genre greats in the '90s/'00s, none of that. It is without question of the most vital sea-changes in terms of how a medium sees itself.

gently caress you, Bob. New Hollywood was an era in film-making from '68 to '80. Not exactly a moment, and a lot of great movies came out of that time, and mega-directors was the 70's also, like when Spielberg made Jaws and Close Encounters...

Moviebob posted:

If this is the paradigm that the success of the “producer-driven” MCU threatens to knock down, I say let it fall – it’s about drat time. It may not be right for every project, but Kevin Feige and company running Marvel’s machinery in the Old Hollywood “Here’s the movie we want to make, find the director who can deliver it” fashion (you know, the way a whole slew of the greatest and most-memorable films of all time were made) has been working like gangbusters for the better part of a decade now.

The funny thing is, movies like Amazing Spider-man 2 and Josh Trank's Fantastic Four also have the fingeprints of the Studio system all over them (Studio demanded reshoots, screenplays that feel like the mash up for 3 screenplays), but they are not talked about.

Moviebob posted:

And if we can indeed thank a “filmmaker-driven” approach for a gloomy, neck-breaking Superman, Bro’seiden and (for some reason) Jared Leto, I feel pretty comfortable leaving my chips on whatever you call the approach that says “Hey, how about we ask that weirdo from SUPER to make our Space Raccoon movie!?”

 it's the film-makers's fault that Warner Bros is trying to do with DC what Marvel did and is failing. It's not an incompetent studio trying to emulate something and not having patience.

tl;dr - MovieBob gets Lockjaw giving Marvel Studios a massive blowjob.

You can't call yourself a film critic and think Other M was good, that game's story failed on so many basic cinematic levels

Also the best MCU movies were the ones that were way more director driven, so I think he likes auteurs without realizing it

I think it's because he looks edgy in a hot topic, "You are trying to hard" kind of way. Leto is just in a no win situation. Anyone after Heath Ledger has big shoes to fill.

I think come release, Suicide Squad and Batman V Superman will have bigger problems than it's actors and the looks. I'll still see Suicide Squad though.

Don't over think the article. Bob loves the MCU, so he is bending cinematic theory to suit his bias. That's why he makes a dig at the DC shared universe. DC bad, Marvel good, so cinematic theory must be made to fit that narrative. DC's shared universe is studio driven as well, just it is being executed poorly.

Mass market movies have little incentive to be feminist because so much of their money comes from screenings in international markets that don't want to see women in charge. TV's market is largely domestic, so they can tailor the product to American (or Canadian or whatever) tastes.

I haven't watched his review, because his Pixles review was worse than the actual film...but Spectre was really, really bad. Bad in a way that no Bond movie has ever reached. The amount of leaps in logic the film goes through to tie all the Craig movies together is just baffling. And the "reveal" is so lovely and pointless that I couldn't believe a James Bond movie in 2015 actually did it. They took Goldmember and Star Trek Into Darkness and smooshed them together into this uneven, and fairly ugly looking movie..
