I was under direct orders not to die
🐵❌💀

Crossposting from the weather thread, this is how I spent the first two hours of Wednesday.

Picnic Princess posted:

I had incredible success the early hours of Wednesday morning! The entire sky was filled with Northern Lights, I had never, ever seen them on the south horizon before. It was crazy. And the solar wind was creating waves of flashes through the pillars in the sky, even directly overhead. The only thing I can compare it to is when gusts of wind dance across meadows and grassy fields. It looked like that but with light. The winds were travelling over 700km/second. It was such an incredible experience. Sadly there's no way to capture the pulsing and dancing of the solar wind gusts through the lights, but I did get these shots.

I really like these. The first one has a Rothco-esque look to it, and the last one is just great.

Jesus christ this thread keeps producing incredible stuff on a daily basis. When I first looked at it I was a little confused by the subject matter, expecting more along the lines of natural landscapes such as waterfalls and sunsets etc. So glad that I kept with this thread, really makes me see stuff differently as a photographer.

If you haven't, take a read at Pierce Lewis Axioms for Reading the Landscape, it's very nice writing on man-made landscapes.

There's a link for you:
