Like, the reason why everyone lives in houses that still contain the ruined possessions of people who are long dead is not for any reason except "because it's a post-apocalyptic setting"

Bad Seafood posted:I actually thought House's goals for the Mojave were far more reasonable and manageable than either the NCR's or the Legion's. They were also more sustainable than either, but I was going Free Vegas because I felt that was the direction the game was leading me thematically, before my computer crashed and I lost everything.

It's probably intentional and showing that even something like that is considered the pinnacle of quality in the Fallout world, but the New Vegas Strip looks like a rundown piece of poo poo. I was really disappointed, I was expecting to see something that looked pre-war when I got there.

DoubleDonut posted:Like, the reason why everyone lives in houses that still contain the ruined possessions of people who are long dead is not for any reason except "because it's a post-apocalyptic setting" They're poor and some of the houses are literally made out of tin roofs, and the only nearby person who could make new buildings is an old man with robot wives. In FO3 that's just sort of what Washington D.C. is like all of the time, really.

I'm more impressed with the pre-war clothing that has survived nuclear bombardment and centuries outside in the hot Mojave sun. That poo poo should give you a bigger armor bonus than Power Armor, realistically.

DoubleDonut posted:Look I just think it's lovely world-building and I think you could do something cool with a setting where people are torn between trying to emulate the pre-apocalyptic society of centuries ago and moving on to something new, but instead Fallout seems like it's stuck at twenty years after the bombs fell forever They got too post-apocalyptic in that somebody has to have started rebuilding at that point, you can't just sit on your asses not rebuilding after that long. But that would break the setting so nobody is allowed to rebuild beyond a certain point. Fallout 3 is nonsensically post-apocalyptic, it'd make more sense shortly after the bombs dropped, not after the first two games. New Vegas at least has the excuse of being in the middle of a desert.

Parallax posted:I'm going to be honest and say this is an entitled opinion to feel towards any creator or creative entity (except in a really EXTREME case like if they made Kermit the Frog a rapist) Sometimes creative properties change hands, which is fine, but when the new folks mishandle it or end up wildly off-base, I think it's entirely acceptable for long-term fans to feel slighted. I'm not advocating burning down Bethesda here, I'm just saying it's not that unreasonable a thing to get grumpy about.

I only saw the first few episodes of Tamako Market, but common consensus seems to be that the bird was the worst part of it. I'm inclined to agree since it seems like a fine show without it.

I'll admit I'm talking more about FO3 because I didn't care about the alleged better writing in New Vegas and gameplay-wise it seemed to basically be FO3 but it takes longer to get weapons that aren't dogshit

Fallout 2 has many robots too, but most of them are evil and one is hard to get unless you put a lot of focus into specific skills.

Something else that's neat about New Vegas is if you go exploring you actually stumble across a lot of farmland in a variety of places. There's no point to discovering any of it, you don't get anything; it's all just there to show you where everyone's getting their food and water in the middle of the desert.
